Achondroplasia and severe sensorineural hearing loss: The role of active bone conduction implants.

The BONEBRIDGE is a partially implantable, transcutaneous bone conduction device that can be used to treat conductive or mixed mild-to-moderate hearing loss in patients who do not attain sufficient improvement from conventional hearing aids. The following case report describes sequential bilateral BONEBRIDGE implantation in a 25-year-old patient with achondroplasia and bilateral mixed-hearing loss with a significant sensorineural component in the setting of chronic suppurative otitis media. Although the patient did not meet the approved BONEBRIDGE criteria, implantation was successful with imp

[Hearing loss in giant cell arteritis: A case report].

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is a rare manifestation in giant cell arteritis. The different types of deafness are possible with a predominance of sensorineural deafness. CASE REPORT: We report a 75-year-old woman who presented with typical manifestations of giant cell arteritis associated concomitantly with the occurrence of bilateral mixed hearing loss confirmed on the audiogram. Corticosteroids allowed a rapidly favorable clinical and biological outcome. The follow-up audiogram at 3 months was markedly improved and showed a decrease in sensorineural hearing loss and disappearance of conductiv

Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids Fitted According to NAL and DSL Procedures in Adults with Mixed Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Bone-anchored hearing aids represent a valid alternative for patients with conductive/mixed hearing loss who cannot use hear- ing aids. To date, these devices have given good audiological results, thanks to various fitting prescription programs (i.e., National Acoustic Laboratories and Desired Sensation Level). The aim of this study is to compare 2 types of fitting algorithms (National Acoustic Laboratories and Desired Sensation Level) implemented for bone-anchored hearing devices. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 10 patients followed at our operative unit, suffering from bila

Advances in auditory implants.

Auditory implants are classified into bone conduction (BAHA and Bonebridge; BB) and active middle ear implants (Vibrant Soundbridge; VSB) that stimulate cochlear hair cells, and cochlear implants (CIs) that stimulate neural structures. CIs should be performed as early as possible, and bilateral CIs have become popular because sound localization and speech recognition can be improved. CI is also considered a desirable treatment option for patients with single-sided deafness. VSB provides a safe and effective option for patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss and moderate to severe sensor

Prevalence of hearing loss in children living in low- and middle-income countries over the last 10 years: A systematic review.

AIM: To summarize the literature on the prevalence of pediatric hearing loss in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHOD: A systematic review initially identified 2833 studies, of which 122 met the criteria for inclusion. Eighty-six of those studies included diagnoses and were included in a meta-analysis. RESULTS: The meta-analysis indicated a 1% (95% confidence interval = 0.8-2.0) prevalence of childhood hearing loss across LMICs. There was significant heterogeneity between studies and evidence of publication bias. The prevalence of mild and moderate cases of hearing loss was higher

Differentiation between IgG4-related Mikulicz disease and Sjögren's syndrome: A review case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: IgG4-related diseases cause lesions in various organs throughout the body. In otorhinolaryngology, IgG4-related Mikulicz's disease is suspected and diagnosed based on the presence of lesions of the head and neck, salivary and lacrimal gland enlargement, and bilateral sinus opacity concentrated on the maxillary sinuses. However, in some cases, it is necessary to consider about differentiation between IgG4-related Mikulicz's disease and Sjögren syndrome. Does tympanic membrane perforation have a protective effect on the inner ear in blast-injured patients?

BACKGROUND: Blast-induced hearing loss is an acoustic trauma commonly caused by high-energy explosions of improvised explosive devices, and the auditory system may be affected by blast damage. This study aims to evaluate the protective effect of tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) on the inner ear against blast injury. METHODS: In this study, 43 adult patients who had suffered blast injury were divided into three subgroups: intact tympanic membranes in both ears, unilateral TMP, and bilateral TMP. Each patient underwent a comprehensive audiogram, including bone conduction, in the audiology de

Hearing characteristics of infantile-onset Pompe disease after early enzyme-replacement therapy.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that enzyme-replacement therapy (ERT) is crucial to the survival of patients with infantile-onset Pompe disease (IOPD). Hearing impairment (HI) is one of the clinical sequelae observed in long-term survivors. However, the benefits of early ERT for hearing outcomes have not yet been reported. This study aimed to investigate the impact of early ERT on IOPD patients. METHODS: This retrospective longitudinal study recruited IOPD patients who were referred by newborn screening for confirmatory diagnosis based on our rapid diagnostic criteria and received early ERT treat

Cochlear implantation in Branchiootorenal syndrome - case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Branchiootorenal syndrome (BOR) manifests with branchial fistulae, otological anomalies and renal dysplasia. Management remains largely symptomatic. The most common consequence of BOR is mild-to-profound sensorineural, conductive or mixed hearing loss, where conventional hearing aids (HA) provide limited benefit. Cochlear implantation for BOR-associated hearing loss is an emerging treatment. Existing literature remains limited, centring around paediatric cases. OBJECTIVES: This paper is the first to present a case of an adult/non-paediatric BOR patient receiving bilateral cochle

Device failure caused by the dissociation of floating mass transducer in Vibrant SoundBridge®.

BACKGROUND: Vibrant SoundBridge® (VSB), a semi-implantable middle ear device, is one of the treatment options for patients with mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss or mixed hearing loss. Herein, we report delayed device failure after VSB surgery in two patients. CASE PRESENTATION: In both cases, a revision surgery was performed for the removal of the device; dissociation of the floating mass transducer (FMT) and coupler was noticed in one patient, and dissociation of the FMT-coupler complex from the short process of the incus in the other. In Case 1, the vibration-like sounds disappeare
