Hearing outcomes in children of diabetic pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: Children of diabetic pregnancies (CDPs) face numerous risk factors for hearing loss (HL). The objective of this study was to investigate the hearing outcomes of CDPs on a population scale. METHODS: Using the Audiological and Genetic Database, the prevalence, severity, and progression of HL in CDPs was compared against children of non-diabetic pregnancies (CNDPs) who served as controls. RESULTS: Among 311 CDPs, 71.1% demonstrated evidence of HL compared to 45.5% in CNDPs (p < 0.001). The mean age at which CDPs received audiograms was 3.6 years compared to 5.4 years for CNDPs (p < 0

Implantable Devices for Single-Sided Deafness and Conductive or Mixed Hearing Loss: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Single-sided deafness refers to profound sensorineural hearing loss or non-functional hearing in one ear, with normal or near-normal hearing in the other ear. Its hallmark is the inability to localize sound and hear in noisy environments. Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is a mechanical problem with the conduction of sound vibrations. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Conductive and mixed hearing loss, which frequently affect both ears, create additional challenges in learning, employment, and quality of life. Cochlear implan

The effect of middle ear effusion on the inner ear condition in children.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the most common cause of hearing impairment among children in developed nations. Middle ear (ME) fluid accumulation leads to progressive hearing impairment, usually of the conductive type. In some cases, mixed hearing loss associated with OME has been noted. It was reported that effusion in the ME has a negative impact on the vestibular system of the inner ear. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this random-sample cohort study was to evaluate postural stability and the influence of ME drainage on vestibulospinal reflexes in children with OME, and to determi

Acquisition limitations of bone conduction hearing devices in children with unilateral microtia and atresia.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the use of bone conduction hearing devices (BCHD) for hearing management in children with unilateral congenital aural atresia (CAA) at a tertiary pediatric center's microtia clinic while assessing challenges in acquisition. BCHD generally provides better audiologic outcomes than atresiaplasty in pediatric CAA. BCHD is formally recommended for only bilateral CAA, although literature has begun to show benefit in unilateral CAA. METHODS: A retrospective case series of patients born between 2014 and 2018 with unilateral microtia at an urban tertiary care children's hosp

Role of MRI as first-line modality in the detection of previously undiagnosed otosclerosis: a single tertiary institute experience.

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis causes conductive, sensorineural and mixed hearing loss (CHL, SNHL, MHL) and tinnitus in young adults. It is best diagnosed on high-resolution CT (HRCT). Occasionally, patients presenting with SNHL and/or tinnitus may undergo temporal bone MRI as the first investigation. In this study, we have described the role of MRI as the first-line modality in the detection of previously undiagnosed otosclerosis. Using search words 'MRI otosclerosis' we found 15 cases in the PACS of our institute, (University Hospitals, KU Leuven, Belgium) from 2003 to 2018. Of these, 2 were known

Image-guided surgical navigation for bone-conduction hearing device implant placement.

INTRODUCTION: For pediatric patients, bone-conduction hearing devices (BCHD) have demonstrated excellent outcomes. Unique to this population, BCHD implant surgeries can be technically challenging in children due to thinner, developing bone and syndromes with atypical anatomy. Image-guided surgical navigation (IGSN) clarifies underlying skull structure, potentially improving outcomes. IGSN is commonly used in otorhinolaryngologic surgeries, but current use in BCHD placement surgeries remains unprecedented. We report favorable results of IGSN in BCHD implantation for three children with complex

Outcomes after Application of Active Bone Conducting Implants.

BACKGROUND: A bone conducting implant is a treatment option for individuals with conductive or mixed hearing loss (CHL, MHL) who do not tolerate regular hearing aids, and for individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD). An active bone conducting implant (ABCI) was introduced in 2012 with indication in CHL, MHL, and SSD, and it is still the only ABCI available. With complete implantation of the active transducer and consequent intact skin, a decrease in infections, skin overgrowth, and implant losses, all common disadvantages with earlier passive bone conducting implants, could be expected.
