Pure tone auditory thresholds and their association with cognition in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is associated with cognitive decline and was identified as the strongest modifiable individual risk factor for dementia. However, inconsistencies in the reported strength of this association have been observed. The present study aimed to assess whether differences in the range of sound frequencies used to determine pure tone average (PTA) thresholds could explain the inconsistencies. Data from 13,654 older adults in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were used to compute four different PTA thresholds: Low frequency, Speech (corresponding to frequencies use

A primate model revealed specific age-related changes in spiral ganglion neurons in the cochlea.

Type I spiral ganglion neurons, which play a major role in hearing by conveying electrical sound signals to the brain, are divided into electrophysiological and molecular subtypes. The differences in vulnerability among the subtypes reported in rodents are of pathophysiological importance for age-related hearing loss. However, the changes in spiral ganglion neurons in primates and humans have not been established. In this study, we investigated the age-related changes in the spiral ganglion neurons of the common marmoset, a primate model animal. Here, we show that the overall number of spiral

Gut-Metabolome-Proteome Interactions in Age-Related Hearing Loss: Insights from Fecal Microbiota Transplantation and Multi-Omics Analyses.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent sensory disorder lacking disease-modifying interventions. The biological drivers, particularly the contribution of the gut microbiota and gut-inner ear crosstalk, remain poorly defined. Here, we utilize germ-free (GF) mice and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to isolate microbiota-dependent effects on ARHL progression. Through integrated metagenomic, metabolomic, and proteomic profiling, we map molecular signatures of auditory aging and uncover functional gut-inner ear network, prioritizing 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) as a key intermediate m

Peripheral and central auditory dysfunction, cardiometabolic multimorbidity, and cognitive performance in community-dwelling older adults: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Both age-related peripheral or central hearing loss, and cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), which are independent association with global and domain-specific cognitive impairment, are common among older adults. Cardiometabolic diseases also are independent risk factors of age-related hearing loss. The first aim of the study was to investigate the independent and joint influence of CMM and low- and high-frequency hearing loss or central auditory processing dysfunction (CAPD) on global and domain-specific cognitive impairment. The second aim was to investigate whether CMM mediate

Epigenetic Age Acceleration and Hearing Function in US Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is a prevalent condition in older adults. Epigenetic age acceleration has emerged as a potential biomarker for age-related diseases; however, there is limited evidence of the link between epigenetic age acceleration and hearing loss in older adults or how it varies by sex. This study is to investigate (1) the association between epigenetic age acceleration and hearing function and (2) sex differences in this association. DESIGN: Data from the Health and Retirement Study, a large, nationally representative sample of adults aged 50 yrs and older, were analyzed. The stud

A reliable and holistic approach to evaluating hearing and cognitive auditory processing in adult and aged companion dogs.

Presbycusis affects both peripheral and central auditory systems in people and dogs. While comprehensive behavioral hearing tests exist for people, veterinary audiology lacks methods to assess central auditory function in dogs. This study aimed to develop behavioral hearing tests for dogs. We introduced two novel assessments: the Enclosed Canine Hearing Observation (ECHO) test and the Evaluation of Auditory Reward Response (EARR) test. Fourteen adult dogs with normal hearing, five deaf and five senior dogs were included. The ECHO test evaluates a dog's ability to detect sounds; only hearing do

[Current status and future perspectives on age-related hearing loss and cognitive impairment].

Objective:Age-related hearing loss(ARHL) is one of the most common sensory degenerative disorders in the elderly, characterized by high prevalence, insidious onset, and progressive deterioration. Recent studies indicate that ARHL not only impairs communication and quality of life in older adults, but is also significantly associated with the development of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. However, its underlying pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, and the relationship between clinical phenotypes of ARHL and cognitive decline has yet to be clearly defined. ARHL occupies a

[Research progress on the mechanism of auditory center remodeling and clinical intervention strategies in presbycusis].

Objective:Presbycusis is a bilateral symmetrical hearing loss related to age. The deprivation of auditory input caused by the degeneration of the inner ear structure is the main reason for the remodeling of the auditory center. At the level of the central nervous system, it leads to the upregulation of central gain and the imbalance of excitation-inhibition, thereby causing symptoms such as tinnitus and auditory hypersensitivity. At the cellular and molecular levels, it can induce cross-channel remodeling of the auditory cortex and other multiple senses, leading to a decline in speech ability,

Functional-Structural Coupling: Brain Reorganization in Presbycusis Is Related to Cognitive Impairment.

Presbycusis, a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, is characterized by declining speech recognition and has been associated with cognitive impairments across multiple domains. However, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms between presbycusis and cognitive impairments remain unclear. We assessed pure-tone audiometry thresholds (PTA), speech recognition thresholds (SRT), and cognitive abilities in individuals with presbycusis (24 males and 31 females) and healthy controls (23 males and 32 females). Using magnetic resonance imaging, we calculated the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations

Veteran and Provider Perspectives on Rehabilitation for Severe Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss is common and a particularly prevalent disability among Veterans. In response, comprehensive hearing services are available within the Veterans Affairs (VA) integrated healthcare system. Severe hearing loss may pose distinct communication challenges inadequately addressed by hearing aids, but data suggest severe hearing loss is often not treated differently. We sought to identify barriers and facilitators to evidence-based and individualized management of severe hearing loss from the perspectives of VA clinicians and Veterans. METHODS: We used purposeful s

Global, regional, and national burden of age-related hearing loss and Alzheimer's disease, 1990-2021, with projections to 2040: A global burden of disease study.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are major contributors to disability in older adults, yet their long-term epidemiological trajectories have rarely been examined together. Evidence linking sensory decline with cognitive deterioration is growing, but global patterns, socioeconomic gradients, and future projections remain unclear. METHODS: Using data from the GBD 2021 study, we assessed global, regional, and national burdens of ARHL and AD from 1990 to 2021 and projected trends to 2040. We analyzed prevalence, incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted

Neural Hearing Loss: Mechanisms, Diagnosis and Treatment Horizons.

Neural hearing loss, characterized by dysfunction of the auditory nerve, including the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and/or their synaptic connections, is increasingly recognized as a critical contributor to auditory deficits across diverse conditions, including Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD), presbycusis, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is possible that neural hearing loss is underdiagnosed, due to the lack of clinical tools with sufficient sensitivity and specificity to detect poor neural health. Current interventions, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants (CIs)
