This cross-sectional study investigated audiological and psychosocial factors associated with hearing aid use preferences among 57 individuals with presbycusis who accepted (n = 37) or refused (n = 20) hearing aids. The refusal group was older and had greater hearing loss. Social loneliness was significantly higher among individuals refusing hearing aids, whereas depression and emotional loneliness did not differ between groups. Exploratory logistic regression showed that older age, male gender, and higher social loneliness were associated with hearing aid refusal. These findings suggest that

BACKGROUND: Approximately one in three adults aged 65-74 years reports hearing difficulty, including age-related hearing loss (AHL, presbycusis). The C57BL/6 mouse is widely used in preclinical AHL research because it develops AHL relatively early. Calorie restriction (CR) attenuates AHL and improves healthspan and longevity in this strain. A recently developed transgenic C57BL/6 mouse expressing naked mole-rat hyaluronan synthase 2 (nmrHas2), which produces very high molecular mass hyaluronan (vHMM-HA), also exhibits improved healthspan, reduced inflammaging, and increased longevity. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent and debilitating sensory deficit in the elderly, with chronic inflammation being a key pathogenic driver. The RNA methyltransferase METTL3, a primary mediator of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification, has been implicated in various aging-related diseases; however, its functional role and mechanism in ARHL remain poorly defined. ARHL models were established using 12-month-old C57BL/6 mice and by treating HEI-OC1 auditory cells with LPS and D-galactose. Auditory function and cochlear pathology were assessed through auditory brainstem response (ABR)

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) affects over 1.5 billion individuals worldwide and remains the most prevalent sensory deficit in humans. Although classical pathological models have emphasized hair cell death from oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, accumulating evidence over the past decade has redefined the cochlea as an immunologically active tissue rather than an immune-privileged organ. Resident macrophages populate the spiral ligament, stria vascularis, spiral ganglion, and modiolus, and they orchestrate both protective and damaging responses to acoustic, ototoxic, metabolic

Noise exposure is an important contributor to age-related hearing loss (ARHL) or presbycusis; however, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. This study re-analyzed two Mus musculus cochlear transcriptomic datasets on acoustic trauma from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database to investigate mechanisms underlying noise-accelerated cochlear aging. We defined age-related differentially expressed genes (ARDEGs) as those genes that were both differentially expressed in response to noise exposure in cochleae and belonged to the aging-related genes (ARGs) set. This analytical step yielded 14

Despite many studies of cochlear synaptic loss and/or recovery after acoustic injury, none has followed degeneration of auditory-nerve fiber (ANF) peripheral axons - a critical knowledge gap in the context of regenerative strategies. We exposed CBA/CaJ mice to a synaptopathic 8-16 kHz noise stimulus producing an immediate 50% loss of inner hair cell synapses, with minimal post-exposure recovery. Noise-exposed and unexposed animals were allowed to survive for 1 month, 6 months, 1 year or 2 years before tissue harvest. Using immunostaining and machine-learning pipelines, we quantified hair cells

Magnesium is believed to have a positive and protective effect on inner ear disorders. We conducted a systematic literature search on the topic. The mesh terms "magnesium", "tinnitus", "sudden hearing loss", "vestibular disorders", "ototoxicity", and "otoprotection" were used for the Medline search. Based on this approach, a narrative review with a structured literature search was conducted. There is good evidence that supplementation with >200 mg magnesium daily protects against the development of age-related hearing loss. A similar protective effect can be assumed for protection against nois

Speech perception difficulties in noise are common among older adults and individuals with hearing impairment, but also occur among younger adults whose audiometric thresholds are within the clinically-normal range. We examined how aging, cochlear synaptopathy (CS), and outer hair cell (OHC) damage affect speech encoding and phoneme discrimination. Envelope-following responses (EFRs) to rectangular amplitude-modulated (RAM) tones and speech-like phoneme pairs were recorded in quiet using EEG, and behavioral discrimination was assessed in quiet, and with ipsilateral and contralateral noise. OBJECTIVES: Hearing impairment is strongly linked to cognitive decline, with individuals having mild-to-severe hearing loss estimated as having a twofold to fivefold increased risk of all-cause dementia. Given the lack of a cure for dementia, addressing conditions associated with increased dementia risk, like hearing loss, is essential. "Brain age," estimated from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, has emerged as a promising objective marker of brain health, aging, and dementia risk. This study aimed to evaluate brain age and the brain age gap (BAG) in patients with severe-to-profound hea

INTRODUCTION: The utilization of large language models (LLMs) in healthcare shows promising potential for addressing the global shortage of audiologists. However, their effectiveness in understanding and interpreting complex, live, real-world structured audiological data requires further investigation, as previous studies have primarily focused on theoretical situations and scenarios. This study aimed to assess and compare the diagnostic inference abilities of ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, USA) and Gemini (Google, Mountain View, USA) in differentiating clinically confirmed diagnoses based on

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), or presbycusis, is a very common sensory disorder resulting from cumulative exposure to environmental factors, biological aging and a significant genetic component. Although most cases of ARHL result from the combined influence of numerous low-effect variants, the increasing number of monogenic forms has shown the importance of rare, highly penetrant mutations in ARHL. Advances in whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing have strengthened the evidence for monogenic contributions, identifying deleterious variants consistent with dominant, recessive, or mitochondr

Introduction: Despite the recognized association between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the genetic relationship and shared transcriptional mechanisms between them remain largely unexplored. Methods: We systematically investigated the ARHL-AD axis using a multi-layered genomic strategy, incorporating causal inference, cis-eQTL mediation, Bayesian colocalization, and independent replication cohort validation. Results: Genetically predicted ARHL was associated with a reduced risk of overall AD and its early/late-onset subtypes, with no evidence of reverse causality

Age-related hearing loss is a progressive bilateral sensorineural loss that increases steeply with age, contributing to communication disabilities and social isolation, impacting healthy aging. Across diverse cohorts, men tend to develop earlier and more severe high-frequency threshold elevations than age-matched women. This male disadvantage is partly explained by gender-related lifetime exposure (e.g., occupational noise, smoking), likely reflecting interactions with biological sex factors, including steroid signaling and mitochondrial susceptibility. Sex differences in cochlear physiology a

Age-related hearing loss is associated with lower cognitive performance in later life, but the behavioral pathways linking these domains remain unclear. Phonological working memory, as assessed by nonword repetition, depends on both auditory input quality and availability of cognitive resources and may represent a candidate pathway linking hearing and cognition. This study examined whether hearing sensitivity and global cognitive performance are independently associated with nonword repetition and whether nonword repetition accounts for part of their association. One hundred twenty adults aged

Mammalian cochlear hair cells convert acoustic stimuli into electrical signals, which are relayed to the central auditory pathway via auditory neurons. Progressive loss of hair cells and their synapses is a characteristic of age-related hearing loss (ARHL), but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that hair cell physiological properties change with age in CBA/CaJ mice, a strain known for its slow ARHL progression. We found that hair cell size began to decrease from 10 months of age, well before detectable increase in hearing thresholds fro

BACKGROUND: Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) is an extensively grown and consumed vegetable. To a lesser extent than other Liliaceae vegetables, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) due to asparagus has been reported. However, only a few case reports of asparagus IgE-mediated allergy have been published. In a previous study, we demonstrated that two lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) (Aspa o 1.01 and Aspa o 1.02) were relevant allergens of asparagus.
OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively analysed the 27 patients diagnosed with asparagus allergy during the last 5 years. All of them reported adverse symptoms

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. Objective: To investigate the role and molecular mechanism of Thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) in the pathogenesis of age-related hearing loss (ARHL), focusing on whether it mediates cochlear hair cell senescence by regulating the ferroptosis pathway, thereby providing new theoretical insights and potential therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of ARHL. Methods: 1-month-old and 15-month-old male C57BL/6 mice were selected to detect changes in TXNIP levels in their serum and cochlea. 5-month-old male C57BL/6 mice were used to establish a senescence model via intraperitonea
