Inner-Ear Disorders Presenting with Air-Bone Gaps: A Review.

Air-bone gaps (ABGs) are commonly found in patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss generally due to outer- and/or middle-ear diseases such as otitis externa, tympanic membrane perforation, interruption or fixation of the ossicular chain, and chronic suppurative otitis media. ABGs can also be found in correlation with inner-ear disorders, such as endolymphatic hydrops, enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome, semicircular canal dehiscence, gusher syndrome, cochlear dehiscence, and Paget disease's as well cerebral vascular anomalies including dural arteriovenous fistula. The typical clinica

Bilateral total deafness after preparation of wild boar meat.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus suis is responsible for a zoonosis for which Suidae (pigs and wild boars) constitute the reservoir, mainly in Asia, with a much lower prevalence in Europe. The predominant clinical manifestation is meningitis, possibly resulting in deafness. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a woman hospitalised for meningitis complicated by labyrinthitis, occurring several hours after preparing a meal composed of wild boar meat. Despite the presence of intracochlear fibrosis, the patient was managed by sequential bilateral cochlear implants. DISCUSSION: The discussion presents a

Pediatric sudden sensorineural hearing loss: Experience in a pediatric ENT emergency care center.

OBJECTIVES: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is relatively rare and its physiopathology remains unclear, particularly in children. Our goal was to evaluate clinical characteristics, etiologies, management, treatment outcomes and prognostic factors in the pediatric population. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all children registered for SSNHL between August 2004 and September 2017 in a tertiary care pediatric hospital. We analysed data regarding clinical symptoms, audiological characteristics, diagnostic investigations and treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Thirty-five

Hearing outcome measures for conductive and mixed hearing loss treatment in adults: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Rehabilitation options for conductive and mixed hearing loss are continually expanding, but without standard outcome measures comparison between different treatments is difficult. To meaningfully inform clinicians and patients core outcome sets (COS), determined via a recognised methodology, are needed. Following our previous work that identified hearing, physical, economic and psychosocial as core areas of a future COS, the AURONET group reviewed hearing outcome measures used in existing literature and assigned them into different domains within the hearing core area. DESIGN: Scop

Longitudinal economic analysis of Bonebridge 601 versus percutaneous bone-anchored hearing devices over a 5-year follow-up period.

OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous bone-anchored hearing devices (pBAHDs) are the most commonly used bone conduction implants (BCI). Concerns surround the long-term complications, notably skin-related, in patients with percutaneous abutments. The active transcutaneous BCI Bonebridge system can help avoid some of these pitfalls but is often considered a second-line option due to various factors including perceived increased overall costs. DESIGN: Longitudinal economic analysis of Bonebridge BCI 601 versus pBAHD over a 5-year follow-up period. SETTING: A specialist hearing implant centre. PARTICIPANTS:

Implantable Devices for Single-Sided Deafness and Conductive or Mixed Hearing Loss: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Single-sided deafness refers to profound sensorineural hearing loss or non-functional hearing in one ear, with normal or near-normal hearing in the other ear. Its hallmark is the inability to localize sound and hear in noisy environments. Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is a mechanical problem with the conduction of sound vibrations. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Conductive and mixed hearing loss, which frequently affect both ears, create additional challenges in learning, employment, and quality of life. Cochlear implan

Auditory Brainstem Implantation for Adults With Neurofibromatosis 2 or Severe Inner Ear Abnormalities: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is a rare genetic disorder that causes vestibular schwannomas to develop in both eighth cranial nerves. Almost all people with NF2 eventually become completely deaf as a result of progressive tumour enlargement or following surgical or radiotherapy treatment. Other rare abnormal conditions in the inner ears can also cause complete deafness. For people with either indication who are not candidates for cochlear implantation, auditory brainstem implantation is the only treatment option to restore some functional hearing. We conducted a health technology asses

A Study of Outcome of Pediatric Cochlear Implantation in Patients with Cochleovestibular Nerve Deficiency.

OBJECTIVES: A cochleovestibular nerve deficiency (CVND) could compromise stimulation of nerve by electrical pulses delivered from a cochlear implant, thereby hindering activity along auditory pathway. The evaluation of children with congenital hearing loss with a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging is presently the investigative modality of choice to diagnose CVND. The aim of this study was to determine the outcomes in pediatric cochlear implant recipients with a diagnosis of CVND. The objectives included (1) to study the prevalence of CVND among children with prelingual congenital seve

Psychomotor development of 4-year-old deaf children with cochlear implants: Three case studies.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing is one of our most important senses, and hearing ability has an enormous impact on a child's psychomotor development. Children with auditory perception disorders may show abnormal development in terms of speech, language, and communication skills, as well as other disorders involving the cognitive sphere, social-emotional interactions, and motor development. This paper describes different paths of psychomotor development in three 4-year-old children. All were born with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss and were implanted early on with a cochlear implant. A longi

[Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum].

Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum. Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum is defined by a hearing loss in in relation to a disturbance in the transmission of sound waves from a normal eardrum to an intact cochlear nerve. The interest in diagnosing these kinds of hearing loss is due on the one hand to their high frequency, on the other hand to the socio-professional repercussions that they can induce and finally to the fact that a large part of them are accessible to surgical treatment or, hearing aid. The CT-scan contributes to the diagnostic orientation and the preoperative

Tonsillectomy versus tonsillotomy for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing in children.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (oSDB) is a condition encompassing breathing problems when asleep due to upper airway obstruction. In children, hypertrophy of the tonsils and/or adenoids is thought to be the commonest cause. As such, (adeno)tonsillectomy has long been the treatment of choice. A rise in partial removal of the tonsils over the last decade is due to the hypothesis that tonsillotomy is associated with lower postoperative morbidity and fewer complications. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether partial removal of the tonsils (intracapsular tonsillotomy) is as effective a
