Functional Plasticity in Auditory and Visual Discrimination Processing in Patients with Single-Sided Deafness: An EEG Study.

Single-sided deafness (SSD) is a typical condition of partial auditory deprivation. Total auditory deprivation triggers cross-modal neural reorganization, but in patients with partial hearing deprivation, how residual auditory function is balanced with the compensatory plasticity of other sensory modalities remains unclear. Previous studies have reported conflicting findings, potentially due to differences in study populations or task designs. Here, we investigated hierarchical neural processing in a homogeneous cohort of 37 congenital SSD patients (31.6 ± 6.5 years, 18 males) and 32 normal-he

Hearing impairment and cognitive decline: Alternative explanations to causality.

Despite growing interest in hearing impairment as a potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia, the association is poorly understood. This has implications for whether treating hearing impairment can prevent or delay onset of dementia, as causation is not the only explanation for the association. In this editorial, we highlight how biases in research studies might account for the reported associations. We suggest future research using different study designs and novel biomarkers to help us overcome methodological limitations. This may allow us to determine the strength of the causal pathw

Retinitis pigmentosa and sensorineural deafness associated with a de novo DHX16 mutation: case report.

BACKGROUND: Retinitis pigmentosa and sensorineural deafness are two distinct clinical entities that can be caused by a variety of genetic mutations. The DHX16 gene, which encodes a protein involved in RNA processing, has been implicated in several genetic disorders. Here, we report a unique case of de novo DHX16 gene mutation presenting with both retinitis pigmentosa and sensorineural deafness. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the story of two 2-year-old girls who presented with progressive vision loss and hearing impairment. Both of these cases presented with de novo heterozygous mutations in

Perceiving Physiology from the Voice: Evidence for Physiological Coupling Between Laryngeal and Epilaryngeal Adjustments.

Behavioral voice therapy and voice training often rely on auditory perceptual prompts and oral sensations to communicate the intended voice production and voice quality. Due to the subjective nature, voice quality perception and sensations vary depending on listeners' experience and do not always allow precise communication of treatment plans and training goals in clinical voice care or voice training. A possible alternative is to describe voices using the underlying anatomical and physiological configurations that are used to produce them. This approach may provide a common, objective framewo

Developmental and early-life stress-induced effects on 5-HT3R-expressing interneurons within auditory cortex.

Early life stress (ELS) is a well-known predictor of neuropsychiatric disease and contributes to the development of sensory processing deficits that persist throughout life. Organisms are particularly susceptible to the deleterious effects of stress during critical periods, when neuroplasticity is heightened, and initial representations of the sensory environment are mapped to cortex. When ELS is induced during the auditory cortical (ACx) critical period, it impairs both neural and behavioral responses to a variety of auditory stimuli that rely on temporal processing. Mechanisms by which ELS m

Exploring sign language, social connectedness, and life satisfaction of deaf adults.

This study explored how sign language use and social connectedness influenced the life satisfaction of twelve British Deaf community members (n = 12, m = 2, f = 10, aged 23-79). During in-person and remote interviews, participants compared experiences of sign language use and social connectedness with experiences of spoken language and exclusion. Reflexive thematic analysis generated two main themes. (1) Gaining Deafness: which explored how sign language use and social connectedness created positive perceptions of deafness, enabling authenticity and agency. (2) Empowering Deaf pride: which exa

Relationship between different blood routine parameters and different types of sudden deafness and prognosis.

This retrospective observational analysis examined the relationship between blood routine parameters and audiometric subtypes of sudden sensorineural hearing loss and prognosis. The 379 participants were then divided into groups according to audiometric configuration, time of onset of symptoms, and prognosis at 4 weeks after therapy. Hemoglobin, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, monocytosis, thrombocytosis, and hypoalbuminemia were positively associated with prognosis, while lymphocytosis, platelet count, age, gender, ASA physical status, obesity, chronic illnesses, chronic kidney disease, diabetes m

Nutrition inequities in the Deaf community: a call for inclusive public health action.

Research shows that understanding the nutritional status and eating habits of people with disabilities is essential for creating effective preventive healthcare strategies. Communication barriers in healthcare settings, low health literacy and socioeconomic inequities are among the challenges this community faces. These difficulties can lead to poor nutritional knowledge, food insecurity and chronic diseases. Deaf individuals also experience higher rates of undernutrition, obesity and micronutrient deficiencies, primarily due to limited access to linguistically appropriate nutrition education.

Hearing parents learning sign language: a call for systemic changes.

Around 90-95% of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children are born to hearing parents, most of whom have no prior knowledge of a sign language. This creates a risk of language deprivation, with long-term effects on language, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Research shows that sign language input supports children's development without hindering spoken language acquisition. Yet many hearing parents of DHH children are discouraged from learning sign language by unfounded claims from professionals or by restrictive support systems. In the Netherlands, parental sign language courses ar

Identification and phased de novo mutation of the EPS8L2 gene in a patient with progressive hearing loss: A case report.

Pathogenic variants in the EPS8L2 gene are known to underlie nonsyndromic progressive hearing loss. In this study, we enrolled a 39-year-old male patient with deafness. We collected detailed clinical characteristics and results of auxiliary examinations, followed by whole-genome sequencing to analyze 189 genes commonly associated with hereditary deafness. Sanger sequencing and T/A cloning were employed to validate candidate variants, leading to the identification of 2 frameshift mutations in the EPS8L2 gene in a compound heterozygous state and in trans: c.357_361dupGGTGC (p.Gln121Argfs67) and

Neural Underpinnings of the Continuity Illusion in Musicians.

The continuity illusion occurs when a sound is perceived as continuous through noise-filled interruptions and has been indexed neurophysiologically as reduced auditory theta band (4-8 Hz) power and phase-locking at the interruption boundaries. Here, we examined the behavioural and neurophysiological differences between musicians (n = 16) and nonmusicians (n = 16) as they listened to trisyllabic words and classical music with noise interruptions. Our aim was to assess two competing hypotheses: (H1) because of their enhanced ability to detect acoustic gaps, musicians are less likely to perceive

Access to Healthcare Services for the Deaf: A Scoping Review of Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Cultural and linguistic minorities are at a higher risk of poorer health, poorer health outcomes, and poorer quality of care, in part due to a lack of access to healthcare services. Inequities in access to healthcare services have been found in several Deaf populations and are associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to describe the breadth, scope, and nature of the literature on access to healthcare services for Deaf adults. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted according to Arksey and O'Malley. Ten scientific databases and grey l

Identification and characterization of a novel p. S390C variant in TMC1 in an autosomal recessive family with non-syndromic hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: TMC1 variants cause autosomal dominant (DFNA36) and recessive (DFNB7/11) sensorineural hearing loss. However, the clinical significance of novel missense variants, particularly in East Asian populations, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to clarify the pathogenicity of a novel variant p.S390C by clinical characterization, genetic and molecular model analysis in China. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Auditory features of the hearing loss were characterized in proband. Variant screening of 406 known deafness-associated genes was performed in proband by targeted next-generation seque

GJB2 c.109G > A mutation activating IFI27-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis pathway leading to hereditary non-syndromic hearing loss.

Non-syndromic hereditary deafness is a congenital condition that severely impairs the lives of affected children. GJB2 mutations are a common cause of this condition, but their underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study investigates the effects of GJB2 mutations on ear structure and function, as well as the underlying cellular mechanisms, and provides directions for potential therapies. We generated zebrafish models carrying the GJB2 c.109G > A mutation and performed knockdown experiments. Using microscopy, we monitored zebrafish development, inner ear structure changes, hair cell staini

Financial Assistance Policy, Hospital Charity Care, and Medical Debt in Collections.

IMPORTANCE: Medical debt is a public health crisis. Hospital bills represent the majority of medical debt and present an opportunity for policy intervention. State financial assistance policies (FAPs) require hospitals to expand patient eligibility. However, it is unknown whether these policies alleviate medical debt. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association of Oregon's FAP with medical debt in collections and hospitals' charity care (ie, free or discounted care for patients qualified for FAPs) and bad debt (ie, total amount of uncollectible patient accounts) expenditures. Deaf children's early sign language access: a guiding values brief.

We propose five guiding values for early sign language access as guidelines for change in the design and practice of early intervention and education of Deaf children. Applying these guiding values will facilitate language-rich environments and reduce the harms associated with language deprivation experienced by many Deaf children. These guiding values are distinct yet interconnected and are applicable for professionals and families alike.

From Spectral Resolution to Speech Perception: A Review of Findings in Postlingually Deafened Adult Cochlear Implant Listeners.

PURPOSE: Reduced spectral resolution limits speech recognition in cochlear implant (CI) listeners. Although many studies have examined this association, uncertainties remain regarding its strength and contributing methodological and clinical factors. This narrative review synthesizes findings from studies of postlingually deafened adult CI listeners, focusing on psychophysical measures of spectral resolution and their strengths and limitations. METHOD: We reviewed studies published through January 2025 that examined the relationship between psychophysical measures of spectral resolution and s

Dual Genetic Diagnosis of Prader-Willi Syndrome and TMC1-Related Severe Congenital Hearing Loss: Diagnostic Challenges and Cochlear Implant Outcomes.

Background and Clinical Significance: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is an imprinting disorder not typically associated with severe congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). When profound SNHL is present in an infant with a known syndrome, an independent monogenic etiology should be considered. We report the first molecularly confirmed case of PWS co-occurring with biallelic pathogenic TMC1 variants causing congenital SNHL, outlining diagnostic challenges, cochlear implant (CI) outcomes, and implications for blended phenotypes. Case Presentation: A male infant with PWS due to a paternal 15q11
