Stereotype threat effects on deaf and hard-of-hearing college students' mathematics performance.

This study examined whether stereotype threat degrades deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) college students' math performance. The DHH participants self-assigned their social identity as "deaf" or "hard of hearing" irrespective of audiological assessment. Social identity is central to experiencing stereotype threat and being deaf or hard of hearing may activate negative biases which trigger a stereotype threat that impacts test performance. A sample of college students (216 deaf, 128 hard of hearing, 152 hearing) were randomly assigned to either a stereotype threat or no-threat test condition and t

Children deaf or hard of hearing living in a French-minority: parents' reflections on services and experiences.

Hearing can shape a child's developmental experiences; how they communicate, learn, interact, and engage with the world. Among the 1 million Francophones who live in a minority situation in Canada, an estimated 600 to 700 are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Canadians living in a minority situation often face barriers accessing certain services. For DHH children, the linguistic environment is particularly important. However, it is unclear whether raising a DHH child in a linguistic minority presents additional challenges. The goal of this pan-Canadian research project was to gain an understandin

The impact of language proficiency on task-dependent neural activity and functional connectivity: insights from deafness.

Our study investigates how language proficiency impacts cognitive processing in the brain. We focused on congenitally and early deaf adults, where individual differences in language access during development significantly influence language proficiency and cognitive function. This variability in language backgrounds and skills allows us to explore the influence of early language experience on the large-scale brain networks that support cognition. We used functional MRI in a group of deaf adults with diverse language backgrounds and a control group of hearing participants. We hypothesized that

Hedgehog Signaling in Tongue Muscle Development: A Comparative Perspective With Limb Myogenesis.

The mammalian tongue is an intricate skeletal muscle organ. From its initial formation to maturation, tongue muscle development involves precisely coordinated processes during embryonic and fetal phases of myogenesis. Extensive research on the regulatory pathways involved in tongue epithelial taste organ development has shown that the Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway is vital to the formation and epithelial patterning of the tongue and taste organs. Emerging evidence also points to its involvement in the initial formation and spatial patterning of the tongue muscle. HH signaling is a well-estab

Dysregulation of Serpinb6a-Gch1 axis contributes to DFNB91 deafness that is amendable to gene therapies.

Hereditary deafness accounts for 60% of congenital hearing loss, and more than 300 deafness genes have been identified. SERPINB6, a gene associated with recessive deafness, also named DFNB91, is linked to non-syndromic progressive hearing loss based on studies of humans and its mouse ortholog Serpinb6a knockout mice. However, the mechanism and biological therapy for SERPINB6 mutation-induced deafness remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that Gch1 is aberrantly overexpressed in Serpinb6a-deficient hair cells. Upregulation of Gch1 in wild-type mice cochlea via adeno-associated virus (AAV) result

Oral language outcomes after narrative intervention in preschoolers who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Many children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) show oral language outcomes below hearing peers. The study aimed to test the effect of a four-week narrative intervention on the narrative macrostructure outcomes of four preschoolers who are DHH. Children received eight intervention sessions, during which the interventionist provided modelling and visual support for stories, and children practiced retelling them. Additionally, we asked children to generate their own personal narratives. We used a multiple baseline single-case research design to assess narrative macrostructure changes based o

GABA corelease guides the functional maturation of glycinergic synapses in an auditory sound localization circuit.

In the mammalian brainstem and spinal cord, glycine is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. However, during development, many glycinergic neurons also corelease the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Although the acute effects of GABA corelease on immature synaptic transmission have been increasingly characterized, its role in synapse maturation and circuit formation remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the developmental roles of GABA corelease at glycinergic synapses from the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) to the lateral superior olive (LS

Perceptual Adaptation of Lexical Tones Is Degraded but Can Be Improved With Lengthened Stimulus Duration in Musically Tone-Deaf Individuals.

PURPOSE: The current study investigated how individuals with congenital amusia (or "tone deafness") responded to lexical tones differed in stimulus duration and carried by distinct syllables. METHOD: Amusics were diagnosed to develop the experimental group to participate in an identification task and a discrimination task, with typical, musically intact listeners being the control group. The test stimuli were actual monosyllabic words in Mandarin Chinese, and they varied in stimulus duration (100 and 400 ms) and were presented in the low- and the high-variability conditions (the tone carried

Identification of decision-making criteria for device selection by cochlear implant patients - a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Prior to a cochlear implant (CI) treatment, patients undergo an extensive consultation process. In Germany, patients themselves usually can select a device from one of the offered CI manufacturers. Patients therefore receive a large amount of information, to support the challenging decision-making process. The aim of the study was to evaluate the parameters that are most important to patients during the consultation process for choosing a CI device. METHODS: In total, 41 patients were included in our study. Questionnaires were used to assess the subjective importance of various device

A Critical Analysis Exploring the Role of African American English and American Sign Language in Shaping Literacy Development.

PURPOSE: This critical literature review examines how African American English (AAE) and American Sign Language (ASL)-including Black ASL-shape literacy development in Black Deaf students. It situates these linguistic systems within broader historical and contemporary contexts of literacy acquisition, highlighting systemic inequities in educational practices that marginalize nonstandard dialects and visual languages. Understanding these dynamics is essential to developing more inclusive and effective literacy instruction that honors the linguistic identities of Black Deaf learners. METHOD: Dr

A dual-stream deep learning framework for continuous sign language recognition to enhance communication accessibility in the Ha'il region.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) depends critically on hand gesture recognition, which also provides the basis of sign language communication for those with hearing problems. In automatic sign language identification systems, however, the contribution of non-manual elements like head posture and facial emotions has sometimes been disregarded. In order to fully capture the diversity of sign language modalities and to enhance the quality of life of deaf people in the region of Ha'il, we present in this study a dual-stream convolutional neural network (TS-CNN) that separately models hand motions

Individuals with congenital amusia show degraded performance in a nonword repetition task with lexical tones.

Congenital amusia is a disorder characterized by abnormal pitch processing, including pitch encoding and pitch memory. Individuals with amusia were impaired in speech perception, but they showed comparable speech production as those without (mainly investigated in tonal languages). Nonetheless, most previous studies collected amusics' recordings based on real words, and little is known about how amusics produce nonwords that incorporate phonological components of syllables and lexical tones. In this study, two participant groups of amusics and typical, musically intact controls (18 participant
