About 70% of people with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) experience hearing loss. There is no cure for OI, and therapies to ameliorate hearing loss rely on conventional treatments for auditory impairments in the general population. The success rate of these treatments in the OI population with poor collagenous tissues is still unclear. Here, we conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of treatments addressing hearing loss in OI. This study conforms to the reporting standards of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). Data sources inclu

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Class of 2010-2011 (ECLS-K:2011) ascertained timing of ear infections within age specified intervals and parent's/caregiver's report of medically diagnosed hearing loss. In this nationally representative, school-based sample of children followed from kindergarten entry through fifth grade, academic performance in reading, mathematics, and science was assessed longitudinally. Prior investigations of this ECLS-K:2011 cohort showed that age has a non-linear, monotonically increasing functional relationship with academic performance. Because of t

OBJECTIVES: Listening effort may be defined as the attentional and cognitive resources needed to understand an auditory message, modulated by motivation. Despite the use of hearing devices such as hearing aids or cochlear implants (CIs), the requirement for high listening effort remains a challenge for individuals with hearing loss. The Listening Effort Questionnaire-Cochlear Implant (LEQ-CI) is a hearing-specific patient-reported outcome measure (PROM), which has been designed for use in the CI candidacy and rehabilitation process to assess perceived listening effort in everyday life in adult

BACKGROUND: Cavum trigeminale cephaloceles (CTCs) are characterized by a cystic appearance and extension of the posterolateral aspect of Meckel's cave into the superomedial portion of the petrous apex. A possible mechanism is a transient or sustained increase of intracranial pressure transmitted to Meckel's cave, leading to its secondary herniation, in the presence of predisposing local factors. The majority of CTCs are incidental findings. Among symptomatic cases, headache, trigeminal neuralgia, cerebrospinal fluid leak, vertigo, ataxia, facial numbness, hearing loss, diplopia, and other visu

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and the Association for Molecular Pathology (ACMG/AMP) have proposed a set of evidence-based guidelines to support sequence variant interpretation. The ClinGen hearing loss expert panel (HL-EP) introduced further specifications into the ACMG/AMP framework for genetic hearing loss. This study developed a tool named Variant Interpretation Platform for genetic Hearing Loss (VIP-HL), aiming to semi-automate the HL ACMG/AMP rules. VIP-HL aggregates information from external databases to automate 13 out of 24 ACMG/AMP rules specified by HL-EP, n

OBJECTIVES: This study identified an association between cholesteatoma and progressive sensorineural hearing loss using a large pediatric longitudinal audiologic dataset. Cholesteatoma is a potential sequela of chronic otitis media with effusion, a commonly observed auditory pathology that can contribute to hearing loss in children. The purpose of this report is to (i) describe the process of identifying the association between cholesteatoma and progressive sensorineural hearing loss in a large pediatric dataset and (ii) describe the audiologic data acquired over time in patients identified wi

The natural history of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is profound bilateral hearing loss. The decision to pursue microsurgery may be more complicated in NF2 than with sporadic tumors. Schwannomas in NF2 often occur with other skull base tumors. Treatment should be tailored to preserve auditory perception for as long as possible. The authors present the case of a man with NF2 and a vestibular schwannoma who has poor hearing on the same side as a large petrous apex meningioma, both opposite to a well-hearing ear. This case highlights surgical decision-making and technical nuances during resectio

Despite the huge progress in the definition and classification of vestibular disorders within the last decade, there are still patients whose recurrent vestibular symptoms cannot be attributed to any of the recognized episodic vestibular syndromes, such as Menière's disease (MD), vestibular migraine (VM), benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular paroxysmia, orthostatic vertigo or transient ischemic attack (TIA). The aim of the present international, multi-center, cross-sectional study was to systematically characterize the clinical picture of recurrent vestibular symptoms not ot

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has indicated an association between hearing impairment (HI) and daily-life fatigue. However, the temporal and contextual correlates of such fatigue are largely unexplored. The present study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine (1) whether people with HI are more fatigued than people with normal hearing, (2) whether individuals with HI and normal hearing (NH) show similar diurnal patterns of fatigue, (3) whether people with HI spend less time in challenging listening situations compared with NH controls, and (4) whether more challenging listening

OBJECTIVE: To develop and pilot a framework based on multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to prioritize non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to support health research funding decision-making.
METHODS: The framework involves identifying NCDs to be prioritized, specifying prioritization criteria and determining their weights from a survey of stakeholders. The mean weights from the survey are applied to the NCDs' ratings on the criteria to generate a 'total score' for each NCD, by which the NCDs are prioritized.
RESULTS: Nineteen NCDs and five criteria were included. The criteria, in decreasing

OBJECTIVE: Sudden hearing loss is a frightening symptom that often prompts an urgent or emergent visit to a health care provider. It is frequently, but not universally, accompanied by tinnitus and/or vertigo. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss affects 5 to 27 per 100,000 people annually, with about 66,000 new cases per year in the United States. This guideline update provides evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients who present with sudden hearing loss. It focuses on sudden sensorineural hearing loss in adult patients aged 18 and over and primarily

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Patients with hearing loss experience impaired quality of life, as well as emotional and financial consequences that affect both themselves and their families. Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is a common but difficult to treat condition that has a sudden onset of ≤ 72 hour associated with various etiologies, with the majority of cases being idiopathic. There exists a wide range of therapeutic options, however, the uncertainty surrounding their comparative efficacy and safety makes selection of

BACKGROUNDBilateral loss of vestibular (inner ear inertial) sensation causes chronically blurred vision during head movement, postural instability, and increased fall risk. Individuals who fail to compensate despite rehabilitation therapy have no adequate treatment options. Analogous to hearing restoration via cochlear implants, prosthetic electrical stimulation of vestibular nerve branches to encode head motion has garnered interest as a potential treatment, but prior studies in humans have not included continuous long-term stimulation or 3D binocular vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) oculography

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is one of the leading causes of disability in Canada and worldwide, with more than one million Canadians enduring a hearing-related disability. Meniere's disease (MD) is a chronic condition of the inner ear, manifesting as a triad of disabling symptoms, including attacks of vertigo, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and tinnitus. Impacts on quality of life are severe, particularly with respect to restrictions in social participation and physical activity, fatigue, and reduced capacity to work. Anxiety and other psychological disorders may result from the r

Due to the high genetic heterogeneity of hearing loss (HL), current clinical testing includes sequencing large numbers of genes, which often yields a significant number of novel variants. Therefore, the standardization of variant interpretation is crucial to provide consistent and accurate diagnoses. The Hearing Loss Variant Curation Expert Panel was created within the Clinical Genome Resource to provide expert guidance for standardized genomic interpretation in the context of HL. As one of its major tasks, our Expert Panel has adapted the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics/Asso

BACKGROUND: Households with a disabled adult are disproportionately food insecure, yet the mechanisms linking food insecurity to disability are under-specified.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and empirically examine a model of the potential pathways connecting specific types of disability with food insecurity.
METHODS: With pooled, repeated cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (1999-2014) including 38,354 participants, we ran probit models to estimate the probability of being food insecure as a function of different sets of disability measures and our control variable
