Kaposi's Varicelliform Eruption: A Serious and Potentially Fatal Complication of Darier's Disease.

Darier's disease (DD) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by skin barrier dysfunction and chronic skin inflammation predisposing patients to secondary infections. Kaposi's varicelliform eruption (KVE), a severe viral infection, most commonly caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), represents a life-threatening complication in these patients. The authors present the case of a 48-year-old woman with DD, who developed a progressive painful vesiculopustular eruption accompanied by systemic symptoms, including fever, bilateral otalgia, and ocular pain. The initial skin lesions, co

Metastasis of Small Cell Lung Cancer to the External Auditory Canal: A Case Report.

Patients with lung cancer often develop distant metastases; however, metastasis to the external auditory canal is rare. We report the case of a 77-year-old man who presented with left-sided hearing loss, otalgia, and a red mass in the left external auditory canal. Computed tomography revealed masses in the left external auditory canal, lung, and pancreas. Histopathological analysis confirmed small cell lung cancer, with thyroid transcription factor 1 positivity in multiple lesions, suggesting a primary tumor in lung. Treatment with carboplatin and etoposide led to a reduction in metastatic les

Chondrosarcoma of the Jugular Foramen: A Case Report.

The vast majority of chondrosarcomas of the skull (CS) are located at the skull base and represent locally aggressive malignant tumors that account for 0.15% of all intracranial neoplasms. Complete surgical resection with wide surgical margins is currently the main treatment strategy, but can be hard to achieve due to the complex anatomy of the head and neck. The jugular foramen, situated in the floor of the posterior fossa and posterolaterally to the petro-occipital suture, is a remarkably rare location for CS. A case of primary CS of the jugular foramen in a 65-year-old patient is reported,

Adverse Effects of Steroid Therapy in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an otologic emergency and is treated with steroid therapy. Despite adverse events (AEs) associated with long-term steroid use being well evidenced, there is sparsity of literature regarding the AEs of short-course prescriptions in the SSNHL cohort, which limits the quality of patient counselling and informed consent. METHOD: A literature search was performed on the Medline and Embase databases for studies assessing AEs in adults with SSNHL managed with oral (OST), intratympanic (ITS) and intravenous steroid therapy (IVS). Is There a Relationship Between Styloid Process Morphology and Symptoms Associated With Eagle Syndrome?

BACKGROUND: Eagle Syndrome is characterized by an elongated or angulated styloid process, often linked to symptoms such as throat pain, otalgia, and dizziness. The association between styloid morphology and symptoms remains unclear. This study evaluates the potential correlation between styloid process characteristics and Eagle Syndrome symptoms. METHODS: This retrospective study included 945 patients who underwent paranasal sinus CT between 2019 and 2022. Styloid process length, angulation, and morphological types (continuous, pseudoarticular, and segmentary) were evaluated. Clinical symptom

Skull base Langerhans cell histiocytosis presenting as persistent ear discharge with granulation-like tissue in the external ear canal.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a neoplastic disease characterised by the deposition of granulomatous lesions in various tissues in the body. LCH of the lateral skull base commonly presents with scalp lesions, post-auricular lesions, otalgia and persistent ear infections. A toddler was brought to the ENT clinic with persistent left ear canal granulation tissue and bloody and malodorous discharge. After failed medical treatment with antibiotic and steroid topical drops. The ear was examined under general anaesthesia. Large friable granulation tissue was seen obstructing the external audi

Foreign Bodies in the Ear, Nose, and Throat.

Foreign bodies in the ear, nose, and throat are common in young children and can also occur in other populations. Patients with foreign bodies in the ear (ie, external auditory canal) are usually asymptomatic but can present with otalgia, sensation of fullness, hypoacusis, pruritus, and otorrhea (usually bleeding). Removal in the office may be attempted in cooperative or appropriately restrained patients with irrigation or instrumentation, depending on the type of object and degree of impaction. Similarly, nasal foreign bodies can often be removed safely in the office with positive pressure te

New evaluation method using sound stimulation for asymptomatic vestibular dysfunction.

The currently available evaluation methods for determining appropriate treatment strategies in patients with asymptomatic inner ear dysfunction are insufficient. Recently, we demonstrated the efficacy of 100-Hz sound stimulation for treating vestibular dysfunction in Meniere's disease. This case report presents the utility of 100-Hz sound stimulation as a new method for evaluating cases with asymptomatic vestibular dysfunction and their potential for recovery with early medical intervention. We evaluated the change in cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) amplitude before and a

[Surgical treatment of otogenic pain and auditory symptoms in a patient with hemifacial spasms].

Hemifacial spasms (HFS) are involuntary contractions of the facial muscles and affect approximately ten per 100,000 persons. Our case describes a 43-year-old woman with HFS and simultaneous, ipsilateral auditory symptoms and otalgia. Under local anaesthetic, the stapes tendon was cut with a laser. Immediately after, the patient reported loss of auditory symptoms and ear pain. These symptoms were still absent at two- and 12-week follow-ups. Our case highlights a possible treatment for patients with similar symptoms that, to our knowledge, has not been described before.
