Otorrhagia following mandibular trauma may appear straightforward; however, underlying external auditory canal (EAC) fractures and associated condylar injuries can be easily overlooked without targeted evaluation. We present the case of an 88-year-old man who developed bilateral ear bleeding and hearing loss after falling and striking his chin. Computed tomography revealed bilateral mandibular condyle fractures with associated fractures of the anterior walls of both EACs. The canals were filled with hematoma, and hearing loss was presumed to result from mechanical obstruction. Otoscopic examin

BACKGROUND Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) serves as a life-sustaining intervention for pediatric patients with severe, reversible respiratory or circulatory failure refractory to conventional therapies, providing temporary cardiopulmonary support to maintain oxygenation, perfusion, and hemodynamic stability. CASE REPORT Following a family argument, a 9-year-old boy fell from the seventh floor, with partial obstruction by a canopy. He presented with immediate loss of consciousness, absent voluntary motor activity, Kussmaul respirations, otorrhagia, and epistaxis. Initial computed to

Traumatic intrusion of the mandibular condyle into the middle cranial fossa is an extremely rare and life-threatening condition. It often lacks specific clinical manifestations, particularly in patients with polytrauma, which typically leads to oversight or misdiagnosis. Although many individuals present without obvious neurological deficits, associated craniofacial injuries such as concussion, intracranial hemorrhage, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, otorrhagia, hearing impairment, and facial nerve dysfunction are commonly observed. Most published cases have involved condylar fractures; however,

Perioperative otorrhagia is a rare complication of laparoscopic and robotic pelvic surgery performed in Trendelenburg position with pneumoperitoneum. We report two cases occurring during robotic colorectal resection performed in 25-degree Trendelenburg with 12 mmHg pneumoperitoneum. A 74 year old woman undergoing robotic sigmoid resection developed left sided otorrhagia intraoperatively, with computed tomography and otolaryngologic examination demonstrating blood in the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane injury. A 63 year old man undergoing robotic low anterior resection developed b

Internal carotid artery rupture in the middle ear is very rare and can be life-threatening. We report the case of a 78-year-old male with a history of chronic otitis media who presented with spontaneous, high-volume otorrhagia. Computed tomography imaging revealed a dissection of the petrous segment of the internal carotid artery with an associated pseudoaneurysm. As the rupture of the pseudoaneurysm was considered the cause of otorrhagia, endovascular stenting was performed. After hospital admission for monitoring and antibiotic treatment, the patient underwent subtotal petrosectomy, with no

A crucial factor in cases of apparent hanging deaths is establishing whether an antemortem hanging or postmortem suspension has occurred. Hanging diagnosis relies upon the history, scene investigation, and gross examination of the body including the ligature furrow and possible resultant injuries including hemorrhages, fractures, and petechiae. However, pathognomonic changes are lacking. Examination of the tympanic membrane may provide additional information to assist in distinguishing antemortem hanging from postmortem suspension. The changes in the tympanic membrane in cases of hanging death

BACKGROUND: Pseudoaneurysms following radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) commonly involve the internal carotid artery (ICA) with epistaxis. External carotid artery (ECA) pseudoaneurysm complicated by temporal bone osteoradionecrosis (ORN) presenting with otorrhagia represents an exceptionally rare, life-threatening complication.
METHODS: We reported a case of delayed otorrhagia due to superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm complicated by temporal bone ORN and conducted a literature review of radiation-induced carotid pseudoaneurysms in NPC patients. A PubMed search (2004-2025

We report the case of a 45-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with otorrhagia following a road traffic accident. Initial examination showed no neurological deficits, and computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed a subtle right temporal bone fracture with associated parapharyngeal emphysema. The emphysema resolved within 2.5 weeks after symptomatic treatment, with no complications on follow-up. This case highlights the importance of vigilance in detecting subtle temporal bone fractures and their rare complications, such as parapharyngeal emphysema, to prevent serious outcom

Skull base osteomyelitis represents a rare but potentially fatal complication of malignant otitis externa (MOE), predominantly affecting elderly patients with diabetes or immunosuppression, and may also occur in individuals with a history of head and neck radiotherapy. We report the case of a 79-year-old female with poorly controlled diabetes and a remote history of undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharynx (UCNT) treated with radiotherapy 17 years prior, who neglected chronic, fluctuating otalgia. She presented with massive left-sided otorrhagia complicated by hemorrhagic shock and a left

BACKGROUND: Over 5% of the global population (430 million people) require rehabilitation for hearing loss. Individuals with hearing impairments face significant challenges in business, daily life, and social participation. Hearing loss (HL) and other permanent physical and sensory disabilities escalate dramatically in cases with brain damage and temporal bone trauma associated with head injuries. This study aims to identify the significant risk factors for hearing loss following head trauma, utilizing current data, and discuss the findings in the context of the literature. This could contribut

IntroductionTraumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide, with epidural hematoma (EDH) being a severe consequence. This study focuses on identifying factors predicting EDH volume changes in TBI patients and developing a machine learning (ML) model to predict EDH expansion.MethodsThe study includes patients with traumatic EDH between 2019 and 2021. Data were gathered from CT scans performed at the time of admission and 6 hours later, and subsequently analyzed. The data was divided into three cohorts: all cases, adults, and pediatrics. To predict EDH volu

Robotic gynecologic surgery is associated with the use of steep Trendelenburg positioning. Steep Trendelenburg is necessary to provide optimal exposure to the pelvis but is associated with an increased risk of non-surgical complications such as suboptimal ventilation, facial and laryngeal edema, increased intraocular and intracranial pressure as well as neurologic injury. Several case reports have described otorrhagia after robotic assisted surgery; however, there are limited reports on the risk of tympanic membrane perforation. To our knowledge, there are no published reports on tympanic memb

In forensic practice, it is not always easy to determine whether a person has died from strangulation. The recommended physical examination includes a thorough inspection of the head, neck, oral cavity, and eyes. Ligature marks are sometimes absent or poorly delineated, especially when soft devices are used. Otorrhagia is poorly described in neck compression, and it is often an underestimated finding. Here, we report a case of massive bilateral otorrhagia produced during strangulation (death by garrotting), and we discuss the possible pathophysiological mechanisms. As our case demonstrates, ot

Mandibular fractures are frequently diagnosed in trauma centres. Tympanic plate and mandibular fossa fractures can be associated with those fractures and can pass unnoticed if a careful evaluation and adequate imaging exam are not performed. This descriptive study was made to evaluate the incidence of condylar fractures associated with mandibular fossa and/or tympanic plate fractures in a large trauma hospital. Twenty-nine patients were diagnosed with such fractures between July/2019 and July/2020. A total of 81.5% of the patients were diagnosed with condylar fracture associated with tympanic

The management of patients with major depressive disorder who present with self-injurious behavior is best optimized through a collaborative interprofessional approach. We describe a case of a 27-year-old woman without personal or family history of thyroid pathology who presented at the emergency department due to a suicide attempt by hanging. On examination, she was tachycardic with palpitations which persisted despite administration of analgesics and anxiolytics. Left temporal area swelling, left otorrhagia, and neck contusion were noted, involving consults with the Trauma, Neurosurgery, and

Initially developed for large and giant wide-necked aneurysms of the internal carotid artery, flow diverter devices are now used in almost every location safely and with effectiveness.1-5 This video demonstrates a unique case of a giant aneurysm of the right petrous internal carotid artery in a 20-yr-old patient. This is an extremely rare location, and most of patients are asymptomatic.3-6 Signs of compression of the seventh and eight cranial nerves can be present and even Horner syndrome and lower cranial nerves neuropathies. Nevertheless, rupture can lead to epistaxis and otorrhagia, and ult
