Comparison of One-Year auditory rehabilitation outcomes by etiology in pediatric patients with bilateral severe hearing loss (70-90 dB): enlarged vestibular aqueduct vs. Other causes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare short-term language outcomes following hearing aid rehabilitation in pediatric patients with severe bilateral hearing loss (70-90 dB), with a particular focus on differences according to etiology. We hypothesized that children with enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) exhibit more favorable speech development compared to those with other genetic or structural causes of hearing loss, and explored the potential presence of a "hidden" air-bone gap associated with EVA. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 36 children under five years of age diagnosed with bilate

A comparison of ABR and ASSR using narrow-band-chirp-stimuli in children with single-sided deafness of various etiology.

PURPOSE: Auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) are available for frequency-dependent hearing threshold estimation in addition to the technique of conventional auditory brainstem responses (ABR). Although ABR and ASSR principally show strong correlations in hearing threshold estimation, there is preliminary evidence that temporal bone malformations might be associated with significantly greater differences between ABR- and ASSR-results. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare hearing threshold estimation derived from ABR and ASSR in a larger cohort of single-sided deafness (SSD) of vario

Altered auditory attention and functional connectivity in the auditory cortex of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies have identified both auditory attention deficits and functional connectivity abnormalities in auditory brain regions in children with ADHD. However, auditory attention deficits are prevalent in children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear, particularly the direct relationship between auditory attention performance and auditory cortical connectivity, which our study uniquely addresses. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between auditory attention deficits and fun

Comparative study of ERP habituation to tones and fearful vocalizations in autism spectrum disorders: a translational biomarker for sensory hypersensitivity.

Sensory issues are common in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and can significantly affect daily living. The phenomena of gating and habituation of event-related potentials (ERPs) to repetitive stimuli have been suggested as potential biomarkers reflecting atypical sensory processing in ASD. Sensory hypersensitivity and anxiety are closely related in ASD, and habituation to emotionally evocative stimuli may serve as a more sensitive biomarker for sensory hypersensitivity symptoms. However, previous studies have primarily used tonal stimuli, and there has been little investigation into whether h

Abnormal EEG activity in major depressive disorder during musical reward experience.

BACKGROUND: A major clinical feature of depression is anhedonia, which is closely linked to dysfunction of the reward system. But there is a lack of research on musical reward and its neuroelectrophysiological characteristics in depression. Therefore, we investigated these characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: The EEG of 28 MDD and 30 healthy controls (HC) while listening to music was recorded to assess theta power spectral density (PSD), theta phase lag index (PLI), frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), and beta/alpha ratio. RESULTS: The Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire

Lateralization of auditory steady state response (ASSR) deficits in first-episode schizophrenia - Effects of attention and associations with auditory hallucination severity.

Psychotic disorders, characterized by perceptual abnormalities and cognitive decline, affect millions of people. Auditory hallucinations (AH), or the perception of non-existent sounds, are particularly taxing. While AH is often viewed as a perceptual disorder, patient distress is more closely related to cognitive factors. Research suggests that dysfunctional attentional control of auditory systems may contribute to AH development, and auditory cognitive control may be a key factor in the link between AH and functional decline. This study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate attenti

Calcium blockers protect against sensory epithelial damage and hearing loss in Cx26-cKO mice.

Mutations in the GJB2 gene represent one of the most prevalent genetic causes of non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss. Accumulating evidence suggests that degeneration of the cochlear sensory epithelium and developmental abnormalities in the organ of Corti constitute the primary pathological manifestations of GJB2-associated hereditary deafness. However, the precise mechanism of hair cell death caused by GJB2 mutation is still unclear. As key components of cochlear gap junction channels that mediate intercellular communication, connexin 26 (Cx26) facilitates the bidirectional transport of

[Auditory dysfunction in Parkinson's disease].

In addition to typical motor symptoms, Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by several non-motor symptoms that significantly impair the patient's quality of life. However, auditory dysfunction, like other sensory impairments across various modalities, is either not assessed at all or is interpreted outside the context of PD. The currently available data demonstrate the multifactorial nature of changes in the auditory analyzer, combining the natural processes of aging, neurotransmitter disorders, and degeneration of neural structures and pathways associated with the pathophysiology of PD.

Outcomes and Considerations of Cochlear Implantation in Patients With Incomplete Partition Type-III Malformation: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) has been shown to be feasible and beneficial in patients with inner ear malformations (IEMs); however, incomplete partition type III (IP-III) malformations are rarely considered. In this scoping review, we evaluate the benefit of CI in patients with the relatively rare IP-III malformation. METHODS: A review in accordance with PRISMA was performed. A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL, and Web of Science was performed. Cohort studies, case studies, and conference abstracts evaluating complications or outcomes of CI in patients with conf

Clinical features of hearing loss in congenital CMV and risk factor for progression.

OBJECTIVE: In congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV), risk factors for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL)or deterioration remain unclear, and little is known about specific patterns of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). We describe SNHL in a cohort of cCMV infants; we reviewed clinical features and their correlation with distribution, timing, and progression of SNHL. DESIGN: Anonymised data regarding the first and the last available audiological assessment, along with clinical and treatment information from children with cCMV and SNHL followed up at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT) and

Degraded inferior colliculus responses to complex sounds in prenatally exposed VPA rats.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often exhibit altered sensory processing and deficits in language development. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) increases the risk for ASD and impairs both receptive and expressive language. Like individuals with ASD, rodents prenatally exposed to VPA exhibit degraded auditory cortical processing and abnormal neural activity to sounds. Disrupted neuronal morphology has been documented in earlier processing areas of the auditory pathway in VPA-exposed rodents, but there are no studies documenting early auditory pathway physiol

The corticofugal oscillatory modulation of the cochlear receptor during auditory and visual attention is preserved in tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: The mechanisms underlying tinnitus perception are still under research. One of the proposed hypotheses involves an alteration in top-down processing of auditory activity. Low-frequency oscillations in the delta and theta bands have been recently described in brain and cochlear infrasonic signals during selective attention paradigms in normal hearing controls. Here, we propose that the top-down oscillatory activity observed in brain and cochlear signals during auditory and visual selective attention in normal subjects, is altered in tinnitus patients, reflecting an abnormal functi

The Directional Effects of Marker Frequencies on Across-Channel Temporal Gap Detection Tasks: An Experimental Study.

INTRODUCTION: Gap detection tests are crucial clinical tools for identifying auditory processing disorders that result from abnormalities in the central auditory nervous system. These tests assess the ability to resolve temporal information in sounds, which aids in the diagnosis of auditory temporal processing issues. This study explores the directional effects of marker frequencies on gap detection tasks with respect to the conditions of long and short frequency disparity (separation). METHODS: We measured the gap detection thresholds (GDTs) using four across-channel narrowband noise conditi

Early auditory processing abnormalities alter individual learning trajectories and sensitivity to computerized cognitive training in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Auditory system plasticity is a promising target for neuromodulation, cognitive rehabilitation and therapeutic development in schizophrenia (SZ). Auditory-based targeted cognitive training (TCT) is a 'bottom up' intervention designed to enhance the speed and accuracy of auditory information processing, which has been shown to improve neurocognition in certain SZ patients. However, the dynamics of TCT learning as a function of training exercises and their impact on neurocognitive functioning and therapeutic outcomes are unknown. METHODS: Forty subjects (SZ, n = 21; healthy subjects

Alpha9alpha10 knockout mice show altered physiological and behavioral responses to signals in masking noise.

Medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents modulate outer hair cell motility through specialized nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to support encoding of signals in noise. Transgenic mice lacking the alpha9 subunits of these receptors (α9KOs) have normal hearing in quiet and noise, but lack classic cochlear suppression effects and show abnormal temporal, spectral, and spatial processing. Mice deficient for both the alpha9 and alpha10 receptor subunits (α9α10KOs) may exhibit more severe MOC-related phenotypes. Like α9KOs, α9α10KOs have normal auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and weak MOC

Hearing loss-related altered neuronal activity in the inferior colliculus.

Hearing loss is well known to cause plastic changes in the central auditory system and pathological changes such as tinnitus and hyperacusis. Impairment of inner ear functions is the main cause of hearing loss. In aged individuals, not only inner ear dysfunction but also senescence of the central nervous system is the cause of malfunction of the auditory system. In most cases of hearing loss, the activity of the auditory nerve is reduced, but that of the successive auditory centers is increased in a compensatory way. It has been reported that activity changes occur in the inferior colliculus (

[Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) - With the "Second" You Hear Better].

Single-sided deafness (SSD) is characterised by deafness in one ear while the other ear has normal hearing. The most common cause in congenital SSD is aplasia of the auditory nerve, and in post-lingual SSD idiopathic hearing loss. Patients with SSD mainly suffer from impaired sound localisation and difficulties in speech perception in noise. There are various therapy options, but binaural hearing is only possible with a cochlear implant (CI).

Developmental trajectory and sex differences in auditory processing in a PTEN-deletion model of autism spectrum disorders.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) encompass a wide array of debilitating symptoms, including severe sensory deficits and abnormal language development. Sensory deficits early in development may lead to broader symptomatology in adolescents and adults. The mechanistic links between ASD risk genes, sensory processing and language impairment are unclear. There is also a sex bias in ASD diagnosis and symptomatology. The current study aims to identify the developmental trajectory and genotype- and sex-dependent differences in auditory sensitivity and temporal processing in a Pten-deletion (phosphatas
