Neurobiological studies of sensory gating in schizophrenia.

The sensory disturbance in schizophrenia is often described as an inability to filter out extraneous noise from meaningful sensory inputs. The neurobiological basis of this inability to filter has been examined using auditory evoked potentials, which are computerized averages of the brain's electrical response to sound. The sounds are presented in pairs to test the ability of the brain to inhibit, or gate, its response to a repeated stimulus. Schizophrenic patients lack the ability to gate the neuronal response shown by a particular wave, the P50 wave. The measurement of this deficit in human

Auditory and visual memory span: cognitive processing by TMR individuals with Down syndrome or other etiologies.

Auditory and visual memory span for letters and component memory processes of TMR young adults with Down syndrome or other etiologies was examined. Component processes of the span task included long-term memory access for labels for the stimuli and memory for the order in which the stimuli were presented. Results indicated that although all subjects had relatively poor auditory memory spans, the Down syndrome group was especially poor at long-term memory access for stimulus identification and at short-term storage and processing of auditory information. Lexical storage and retrieval deficienci

Hearing words and seeing colours: an experimental investigation of a case of synaesthesia.

A case of 'chromatic-lexical' (colour-word) synaesthesia is described, and its genuineness confirmed using the criterion of stable cross-modality imagery across time. The synaesthesia could not be accounted for by a memory hypothesis, nor was it associated with any psychiatric condition. Further analysis did not identify any semantic relationship between real words and colours, but the colours of nonwords were determined by the colours of the individual letters. Numbers also had their own stable colours. The experience of synaesthesia was triggered by other auditory stimuli, but most strongly

Attenuation of acoustic and tactile startle responses of vitamin B-6 deficient rats.

Vitamin B-6 deficient rats exhibit changes in behavior, sensory function, and other nervous system abnormalities such as convulsive seizures and motor disturbances. Sensorimotor reactivity was evaluated quantitatively by measuring auditory and tactile startle responses in 12 week old female Long-Evans rats fed a diet devoid of added vitamin B-6 (DEF) or a control diet, either ad lib (AL-CON) or pair-fed to deficient rats (PF-CON). Deficiency was confirmed with a tryptophan-load test administered to a separate group of rats fed simultaneously according to the same protocol. At week 18, body wei

Age-related hair cell loss in spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats.

In the spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rat, a hereditary form of hypertension and widespread vascular abnormalities develop. In the present study the inner ear degeneration pattern in SH and normotensive (N) rats not exposed to noise was investigated and correlated with frequency-specific auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds. Rats of both strains were found to have a spontaneous loss of apical hair cells, but this was slightly more pronounced in SH. In SH rats, but not in those of the N strain, there was an age-related progressive loss of outer hair cells in the region 3-5 mm from the

Sound detection with the cochlear implant in five ears of four children with congenital malformations of the cochlea.

To determine if the cochlear implant can enable sound detection in children with a congenitally deformed cochlea, we reviewed warble-tone thresholds in five ears of four children in the implant clinical trials program. Of the five ears, there were two common cavity deformities, two cochlear hypoplasias, and one incomplete partition. Four of the five ears had an auditory response to stimulation by the implant at the same level as ears deafened by other disorders. One ear that had an auditory response to stimulation also produced facial stimulation that precluded use of the implant. The one ear

Peripheral and brainstem auditory function in paroxysmal (px) White Leghorn chicks.

The paroxysmal (px) chick is a mutant White Leghorn (Gallus domesticus) which appears normal at hatching and during the subsequent week. By ca. 8 days posthatching, various symptoms develop, of which the most obvious are depressed food intake (anorexia) and audiogenic seizures. Histological evidence suggests that central auditory and vestibular nuclei and fiber tracts begin to degenerate prior to seizure onset. This degeneration, which affects central and peripheral components of both systems, becomes increasingly severe over time although auditory stimulation continues to elicit seizures. Cha

Stimulus intensity and loudness recruitment: neural correlates.

An abnormally rapid rate of loudness growth for given increments in stimulus intensity is seen both in patients with cochlear pathology and in normal listeners under conditions of wide-spectrum noise masking. The phenomenological similarity between these psychophysical observations raises the question of whether a single mechanism, or set of mechanisms, underlies them. Recent neurophysiological studies in animals have addressed the effects of cochlear pathology and noise masking on the neural correlates of stimulus intensity in the central auditory nervous system. A comparison of the data pres

Neuropsychological capacity of Prader-Willi children: general and specific aspects of impairment.

Although most Prader-Willi syndrome children perform in the mentally retarded ranges on standardized IQ tests, it is not known if their cognitive impairments are global in nature or if they exhibit a particular pattern of strengths and weaknesses in their psychological capacities. To examine this question, a cohort of children suffering from Prader-Willi syndrome was administered a battery of neuropsychological tests. The results indicated that, relative to other cognitive capacities assessed, particularly severe deficits were noted on tasks that involved information processing using the audit

Evoked potentials in hysteria and malingering.

Evoked potentials are often helpful in confirming the nonorganic nature of sensory symptoms in hysteria and malingering. In a retrospective analysis, such cases were found to comprise approximately 1% of referrals to a university hospital laboratory. However, the diagnostic usefulness of electrophysiologic tests is limited in some clinical settings: normal responses may be encountered in subjects with certain organic deficits, and "abnormal" responses can sometimes be produced voluntarily by normal subjects. In malingering--as opposed to hysteria--the role of the technologist in monitoring pat

The sensitive period for auditory localization in barn owls is limited by age, not by experience.

Early in life, the barn owl passes through a sensitive period during which it can interpret and make use of abnormal auditory cues for accurate sound localization. This capacity is lost at about 8 weeks of age, just after the head and ears reach adult size (knudsen et al. 1984a). The end of the sensitive period could be triggered either by an age-dependent process or by the exposure of the auditory system to stable or adult-like cues. To distinguish between these alternatives, we subjected baby owls to constant abnormal cues (chronic monaural occlusion) or to frequently changing abnormal cues

Neuropsychological correlates of information-processing by children with Down syndrome.

Nine children with Down syndrome were compared to two groups of nonretarded children, one similar in CA, the other a chronologically younger group of similar MA. The event-related brain potential (ERP) and reaction time (RT) results indicated that children with Down syndrome process some types of auditory information more slowly than do MA- or CA-matched nonretarded children. They were found to differ from nonretarded children in the scalp distribution of amplitudes of certain ERP components. Finally, the speed of processing and amplitude differences that were found could not be explained on t

Genetic factors affecting hearing development.

Both genetic background and single gene mutations may affect the development of the auditory system. A classification system is presented for those single gene mutations causing hearing impairment. The new feature of this classification is the inclusion of a category for hereditary deafness of central origin. The other categories involve peripheral abnormalities and are: morphogenetic defects, in which the overall structure of the labyrinth is deformed; neuroepithelial degeneration, in which the primary defect appears to occur in the organ of Corti; and cochleo-saccular degeneration, where the

[Klein-Waardenburg syndrome. Report of 3 cases in a family with a review of the literature].

On account of a recently developed tinnitus, a young woman with the characteristic features of Klein-Waardenburg's syndrome (impairment of hearing, partial albinism, telecanthus) was hospitalised. The mother and the sister of the patient were also affected by the syndrome, albeit to a lesser degree. The otological aspects of the disease are described. Additionally, the possible association of this genetically determined disorder with certain other diseases, such as achalasia, Hirschsprung's disease or immunodeficiency, is discussed.

Enhanced sensory convergence to the visual cortex in the rodless (rd/rd) mouse.

The rd/rd mutation provokes a specific degeneration of the photoreceptive cells in the mouse retina, without affecting other neuronal elements. This degeneration starts 8 to 10 days after birth. Discriminative learning experiments have shown the degenerated retina to remain light-sensitive, the sensitivity being reduced to 10(-5) of normal with a peak still at 500 nm. An ontogenetic study showed a progressive vanishing of visual potentials (electroretinogram and visual evoked potentials) during the third week of life. Potentials of auditory origin, which can be recorded from the visual cortex

Industrial audiometry and the otologist.

The Hearing Conservation Amendment published by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1983 requires hearing conservation programs to be provided for over 5 million workers whose daily noise exposures exceed 85 dBA time-weighted average. The permissible exposure level is 90 dBA, above which the use of hearing protectors is mandatory. Current policies rely heavily on periodic audiometry to detect early threshold shifts due to inadequate use of hearing protection or to individual variation in susceptibility to noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Studies including over 1,000 n

Fusion of stereocilia on inner hair cells in man and in the rabbit, rat and guinea pig.

The complexity of the problem of sensorineural hearing loss is illustrated by the well-known poor correlation between pure tone thresholds and loss of sensory cells in the organ of Corti and between pure tone thresholds and other auditory functions such as discrimination of speech and thresholds of the intra-aural muscle reflex (MER). The present work demonstrates that two types of inner ear pathology are present in several mammalian species, including man. Both types can be induced by noise. In addition to the earlier well-known loss of outer hair cells, it is shown that abnormal sensory hair

Behavioral assessment of a hydranencephalic neonate.

This study attempted to clarify the role of the cerebral cortex in neonatal behavior by administering the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale-Kansas revision to a hydranencephalic infant; particularly of interest were behaviors that are implicated in infant social responsiveness. The examination revealed extremely deviant responses on portions of the exam, including items that measure response decrement and orientation. However, this infant was observed to approximate normal neonatal responding on items relating to motor maturity and reactivity. Other findings included that some response decr

Clinical application of the P3 component of event-related potentials. II. Dementia, depression and schizophrenia.

Patients with dementia, schizophrenia and depression were tested with analogous auditory and visual event-related potential (ERP) paradigms designed to elicit a large P3. The patient groups were compared to age normative predictions derived from a large control sample for a number of ERP and behavioral variables. The results were similar for the auditory and visual paradigms. P3 latency was prolonged two or more S.D.s beyond that predicted by age for less than one-half of the demented patients. This latency prolongation was significant for the group as a whole but would result in too many fals

Single cochlear fibre responses in guinea pigs with long-term endolymphatic hydrops.

Some cochlear fibre response properties have been measured in two GPs approximately one year after induction of endolymphatic hydrops (by surgical obliteration of the endolymphatic sac and duct). These animals are considered as models of the effects of hydrops in Menière's disease, and the purpose of the study was to examine any modifications of fibre response properties which may underly auditory symptoms of the disease in man. Neurones towards more apical cochlear regions (with low characteristic frequencies) showed the greatest deterioration in tuning properties; on average, in the 1-6 kHz
