Chinchillas were exposed to an 86 dB SPL octave band of noise centered at 4.0 kHz for 3.5--5 days. The noise elevated the hearing thresholds between 4.0 and 16.0 kHz to between 60 and 75 dB SPL. Measurements from single neurons in the cochlear nucleus revealed abnormalities in the response properties of neurons with characteristic frequencies (CF) above 2.0 kHz. Units above 2.0 kHz had elevated thresholds (between 50 and 90 dB SPL) and broad tuning curves due to a greater loss in sensitivity near CF than at lower frequencies. This is a prospective in-depth study of patients with sudden idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss. We found that 65% recover completely to functional hearing levels spontaneously and independent of any type of medical treatment. The majority do so within 14 days and many within the first few days. The purpose of this study was to determine if previously documented perfomances deficits of patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease are peculiar to centrallly mediated visual tasks or are also manifested on tests of other centrally mediated sensory functions such as hearing. Congenital abnormalities of the bony labyrinth and internal auditory meatus range from complete absence to minor anomalies compatible with normal cochlea function. A 'follow-up' survey to assess the hearing of 56 patients with abnormalities of the inner ear shown by tomography was made. The hearing levels are discussed in relation to the tomographic appearances and comparison made with other series of inner ear abnormalities demonstrated both radiographically and histologically.

Results from a special battery of auditory tests are used to document, for the first time, recovery from a total unilateral hearing loss occurring as part of a latero-medial inferior pontine syndrome. Sixteen adult, right-handed, moderate-to-severe atutterers (12 males, 4 females) and 20 nonstuttering controls (10 males, 10 females) were given a dichotic nonsense-syllable test to determine hemispheric lateralization for speech. A systematic psychiatric follow-up study of 502 schizophrenics was carried out using the same well-defined criteria to evaluate the patients throughout the investigation. After an average course of disease of 22.4 years, 22.1% of the patients showed complete psychopathological remission, 43.2% had non-characteristic types of remission and 34.7% suffered from characteristic schizophrenic deficiency syndromes. Children with Down's syndrome were compared with other severely retarded children on tests of recognition and reproduction of real and nonsense words after 0-, 15-, and 30-seconds delay. The results indicated that Down's syndrome children performed better on the recognition task, but worse on the reproduction task after delay, as compared with the other retarded children. It was hypothesized that the articulatory deficit in the Down's syndrome group is part of a general motor disability due to a difficulty in preprogramming sequences of movements.

The audiological findings in 125 patients with surgically confirmed acoustic neuromas are presented. Following the classification by Pulec et al.
