[Immunotherapy with leakadin in the combined therapy of acoustic neurinomas].

The paper reports the data obtained on the efficacy of a new anti-cancer immunomodulator leacadin in neurinoma of the acoustic nerve. Leacadin participates in formation of a close regulatory relation between the brain and immune system, promotes centralization of immunity regulation in conditions of surgical trauma. The drug can also increase the level of natural killers and helpers, reduce neurosensitization and the amount of suppressors.

Stereotactic radiosurgery for acoustic nerve tumors in patients with useful preoperative hearing: results at 2-year follow-up examination.

Twenty patients with acoustic nerve tumors (mean diameter < or = 30 mm) and useful preoperative hearing were examined 2 years after stereotactic radiosurgery to determine the effectiveness of the surgery in the control of tumor growth and the preservation of cranial nerve function. Results showed tumor volume stabilization (12 cases) or reduction (seven cases) was achieved in a total of 19 patients (95%). Useful hearing (defined as Gardner and Robertson Class I or II) preservation was obtained in 100% of cases immediately postoperatively, 50% at 6 months, and 45% at both 1 and 2 years. Two yea

Facial myokymia due to acoustic neurinoma.

The case of a 62-year-old female patient who presented with facial myokymia is reported. The patient had a 13-year history of progressive left-sided hearing loss. In further course, involuntary, wormlike, rippling movements of the left facial muscles developed. Computed tomography revealed a tumor located in the left cerebellopontine angle. Electrophysiologic examinations confirmed the diagnosis of facial myokymia. The tumor, which evolved from the eighth cranial nerve, was totally removed microsurgically. The tumor was histologically verified to be an acoustic neurinoma. Postoperatively, the

The neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) tumor suppressor gene encodes multiple alternatively spliced transcripts.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominantly-inherited disorder predisposing affected individuals to tumors of multiple cell types in the central nervous system, including meningiomas. A candidate tumor suppressor gene for this disorder has recently been cloned; the protein product of this gene has a predicted role in linking integral membrane proteins with the cytoskeleton. Utilizing reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analyses, we have identified a number of alternatively spliced transcription products encoded by the NF2 gene. These alternative splice varian

[Value of Head-Shaking's test in the pre- and the postoperative vestibular assessment].

The value of Head-Shaking maneuver has brought scientific controversies regarding its role as a clinical tool. In the following publication, we explain the discrepancies between the different studies and find out the role of such a maneuver for clinical evaluation during the pre and post operative period. We showed the influence of the diagnosis and the importance of time interval in the post Head-Shaking responses.

Acceleration registrography of head movement during alternating inclination of the support platform.

The righting reflex, essential for maintaining equilibrium, keeps the head and trunk in a state of balance with regard to gravity. Because patients suffering from vestibular disorders almost always complain of dizziness during everyday movements such as rising and walking, the righting reflex should be evaluated within the context of these dynamic states. A new method of acceleration registrography was designed to enable the testing of this reflex as the subject stands upon a moving platform. Participating in the study were 49 normal control subjects and 80 patients with peripheral vestibular

Magnetic resonance examination of the inner ear and cerebellopontine angle in patients with vertigo and/or abnormal findings at vestibular testing.

The inner ears of 167 patients with vertigo and/or abnormal findings at vestibular testing were studied using magnetic resonance (MR). Pathology potentially explaining vertigo was found in 54 patients, and was detected in the posterior fossa (28%), the internal auditory canal (28%) and the membranous labyrinth (44%). The overall percentage of pathology and the percentage of pathology found in the membranous labyrinth was high and was probably influenced by the referral pattern in our hospital where high resolution MR of the inner ear (three dimensional Fourier transformation-constructive inter

Case report: prolonged contrast enhancement of the inner ear on magnetic resonance imaging in Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

There have been recent reports of enhancement of the inner ear in acute labyrinthitis on gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, none has described persistence of enhancement beyond 6 weeks. We report a case of Ramsay Hunt syndrome with labyrinthitis, sensorineural hearing loss and facial nerve palsy in which marked enhancement of the inner ear structures was observed on MRI 6 months after the onset of symptoms. Enhancement on delayed or repeated imaging after a period of months does not exclude labyrinthitis from the differential diagnosis of the small intracanalicular

[Cervical electrostimulation in some vestibular diseases].

Vestibular disorders may be treated by means of drugs, surgical tools or rehabilitation. Cervical electrostimulation may be regarded as physical therapy and its activity is connected to neural pathways between cervical receptors and vestibular nuclei. In present study electrodes were placed lateral to cervical column on the opposite side of vestibular deficit as pointed by electronystagmography; stimulus duration was 18 msec and frequency 100 Hz. Every stimulation lasts for 30 minutes and were repeated twice a week for a total number of 10. The ability to adjust vestibulo-ocular reflex was eva

Inner-ear abnormalities and their functional consequences in Belgian Waterslager canaries (Serinus canarius).

Recent reports of elevated auditory thresholds in canaries of the Belgian Waterslager strain have shown that this strain has an inherited auditory deficit in which absolute auditory thresholds at high frequencies (i.e. above 2.0 kHz) are as much as 40 dB less sensitive than the thresholds of mixed-breed canaries and those of other strains. The measurement of CAP audiograms showed that the hearing deficit is already present at the level of the auditory nerve (Gleich and Dooling, 1992). Here we show gross abnormalities in the anatomy of the basilar papilla of Belgian Waterslager canaries at the

MRI of the inner ear.

The recent advances in MRI of the temporal bone brought about by the availability of intravenous contrast agents sensitive to the disruption of blood-brain barrier have further expanded the role of MRI in the evaluation of patients with vestibulocochlear symptoms. Not only can MRI be used to diagnose vestibular schwannomas (and other intracanalicular and cerebellopontine angle lesions mimicking it) with a high degree of accuracy, but it can now identify a variety of inflammatory and neoplastic processes of the membranous labyrinth which, in the past, were only made presumptively and occasional

Vestibular nerve section.

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular nerve section is considered to be the most effective surgical procedure for control of intractable symptoms secondary to labyrinthine and eighth nerve function. This study was developed to retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of vestibular nerve section in patients treated for disabling labyrinthine dysfunction. METHODS: A retrospective review of hospital and office records was carried out on 39 patients who underwent vestibular nerve section. All patients received a comprehensive questionnaire to subjectively evaluate efficacy. RESULTS: Questionnaires were returned

Loss of alleles in vestibular schwannomas: use of microsatellite markers on chromosome 22.

OBJECTIVE: Using highly informative microsatellite markers flanking the neurofibromatosis type 2 gene, we determined the frequency of chromosome 22 allele loss in vestibular schwannomas. DESIGN: Peripheral lymphocyte/vestibular schwannoma DNA pairs were analyzed with five different microsatellite markers on chromosome 22. PATIENTS: Samples were taken from 32 patients (17 females and 15 males). Twenty-seven tumors occurred sporadically, and five were from patients with neurofibromatosis type 2. RESULTS: Using the microsatellite markers D22S351, CRYB2, D22S268, D22S304, and interleukin type 2
