PURPOSE: Despite the declining incidence of acute mastoiditis (AM) due to antibiotics, complications persist, necessitating surgical intervention in severe cases. Recent studies suggest conservative treatments, avoiding mastoidectomy, show high recovery rates. However, this trend raises concerns about severe complications, prolonged treatment, increased antibiotic use, and declining surgical skills. While much research focuses on AM pathogenesis and treatment, the long-term consequences, especially post-mastoidectomy ear function, are less understood. To address this, we studied the permanent

OBJECTIVE: Acute mastoiditis, the most common complication of acute otitis media, is approached in our study, focused on children from the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, Spain. The aim is to analyze its clinical-epidemiological characteristics and propose diagnostic and treatment recommendations.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: We conducted a 30-year retrospective study on patients under 18 years of age diagnosed with acute mastoiditis in Cantabria.
METHODS: We analysed epidemiological data, clinical presentation, causes, treatment, and follow-up.
RESULTS: We included 111 patients, 60.4 % of whic

This study is intended to analyze the clinical profile and outcomes of the patients diagnosed with deep neck space infections. Deep neck space infections (DNSI) are commonly caused by nodal and odontogenic origins. Here in our study, we stress the need for appropriate investigations, early surgical intervention, and skillful airway management for the successful outcome of deep neck space infections. Effective management of deep neck space infections includes deep neck space exploration and treating the primary cause, such as dental extraction, removal of foreign body, and mastoidectomy. We hig

OBJECTIVE: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis is associated with otolaryngologic complaints in 70-95 % of cases, with the most common being serous otitis media. In rare cases, patients may experience facial nerve palsy in conjunction with otologic or nasal symptoms; and, often, initially present to an otolaryngologist. It is important for healthcare professionals to be able to recognize the nuisances of facial nerve palsy as a potential presentation of granulomatosis with polyangiitis.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review.
METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and

The clinical diagnosis and treatment, including information such as age, history, clinical symptoms, signs, audiology, imaging examination, mode of operation, and postoperative follow-up, of a patient with suppurative temporomandibular arthritis caused by chronic suppurative otitis media were analyzed. As conservative drug treatment and drainage surgery were ineffective, the patient was treated with microscopic open radical mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty, the plasty of the cavity of auricular concha, facial nerve decompression, coarctation of the mastoid cavity combined with otoendoscpic resecti

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate iatrogenic facial nerve injury in mastoidectomy and its paralysis improvement result after nerve injury management.
METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records of 21 patients with iatrogenic facial nerve injury following mastoidectomy who underwent nerve injury management in a tertiary referral center.
RESULTS: There were nine males and 12 females, with a mean age of 40.4 ± 15.1 years. Cholesteatoma was the most common primary pathology (76.2%). Mastoidectomy was canal wall up in 8 patients and canal wall down in 13. Nerve injury was due to drilling in 10 patien

BACKGROUND: The aggressiveness of paediatric cholesteatoma has long been a matter of debate. While much of the evidence is substantiated by data from the Western world, it is further limited by the retrospective nature of most studies. Therefore, this paper presents a comparative analysis of various characteristics of cholesteatoma between paediatric and adult populations seen at our centre.
METHODS: A total of 50 patients (25 adults and 25 paediatric) with clinical diagnosis of chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma underwent canal wall down mastoidectomy over a period of two ye

BACKGROUND: Bioactive glass (S53P4), abbreviated BG, currently seems to be the best material for reconstructing the posterior wall of the auditory canal and obliterating the postoperative cavity.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to report preliminary results of otosurgery involving obliteration of the mastoid cavity after canal wall down mastoidectomy.
METHODS: 11 adult patients who had had a history of chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma in one or both ears and previous canal wall down mastoidectomy. The duration of the follow-up was 6 months, with routine visits after 7 days, then 1,

Acute mastoiditis is the most common complication of acute otitis media. Although rare, the disease is carefully studied by otolaryngologists because it usually affects very young children with severe clinical course and sometimes causes serious complications. Most important risk factors are the young age (often>2 years), high fever, alteration of the laboratory findings (very high values of WBC count, absolute neutrophil count and C-reactive protein), while less important are previous antibiotic therapy or previous middle ear infections. The main pathogen of the acute mastoiditis is Streptoco

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The overall aim of this study was to evaluate personal protective equipment (PPE) that may facilitate the safe recommencement of cochlear implantation in the COVID-19 era, with the broader goal of minimizing the period of auditory deprivation in prelingually deaf children and reducing the risk of cochlear ossification in individuals following meningitis.
METHODS: The study design comprised 1) an objective assessment of mastoid drilling-induced droplet spread conducted during simulated cochlear implant (CI) surgery and its mitigation via the use of a protective drape ten

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have reported that younger children suffer from increased incidence and more severe episodes of acute mastoiditis (AM) than older children, whereas other researchers have found the opposite. The aim of our study was to describe the occurrence, clinical, and microbiological aspects of AM in children 6 months or younger, and compare them with the results in an older reference age band.
METHODS: The medical files of children hospitalized with a diagnosis of AM during 2001-2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnosis of AM was based on the presence of clinical signs o

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare rheumatologic disease characterized by small to medium vessel vasculitis and inflammation within multiple organ systems. Majority of cases involve both upper and lower respiratory tracts but other organs including brain, kidneys, joints and skin can also be involved. Patients who have recurrent otitis media and sinusitis often initially present to internists and then to ear nose and throat (ENT) physicians and may be treated with multiple courses of antibiotics without having proper workup for GPA. Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) manifests as multiple cranial nerve palsies caused by an abnormal nerve response to inflammation or other processes. Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is characterized by deficient synthesis or secretion of antidiuretic hormone. A 62-year-old woman underwent myringotomy for otitis media with effusion. Two months after the procedure, symptoms of hearing loss had not improved, and she underwent left tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy. After surgery, she presented with left ocular pain and visual loss.
