Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has emerged as a valuable extension of the bedside physical examination, enabling rapid identification of cardiac abnormalities that may not be clinically apparent. Intracardiac masses, particularly in the right atrium, represent a diagnostic challenge and carry significant clinical implications, including the risk of embolization. Early recognition is critical to guide timely management. We report the case of a patient admitted with vaso-occlusive sickle cell crisis who underwent bedside cardiac ultrasound as part of the clinical evaluation. POCUS revealed a p

We aimed to establish a rat TR model to further investigate the mechanisms of right heart remodeling and organ damage induced by TR. Intervention group rats (n = 6) underwent coronary stent system implantation via transjugular approach. The control group (n = 6) underwent the same procedure, except for coronary stent implantation. All rats survived at 8 weeks follow-up postoperatively. TR occurred immediately after the implantation of coronary stent in the intervention group. The right ventricular fractional area change (FAC) decreased by 33.9% compared with baseline from 0.59 ± 0.11% to 0.39

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) is an emerging therapy for severe tricuspid regurgitation with an evolving complication profile. Fatal prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) following orthotopic TTVR appears exceptionally rare, with detailed pathologic description through specialist cardiovascular autopsy remaining limited.
CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old man with severe functional tricuspid regurgitation and persistent atrial fibrillation underwent TTVR. The following day, he developed complete heart block requiring pacemaker implantation. He remained well at 1 and 3 mo

BACKGROUND: The assessment of the right heart (RH) plays a central role in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Although current guidelines have improved standardization, there is anecdotal evidence suggesting that there is significant variability in clinical practice regarding acquisition and reporting persist. OBJECTIVES: This international survey evaluated the extent of variability in echocardiographic assessment of the RH. A simple method for the standardization of RH measurements is proposed. METHODS: The international anonymous survey consisted of 68 que

BACKGROUND: Secondary tricuspid regurgitation (STR) is frequently observed in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Whether it independently confers mortality risk beyond the associated right ventricular (RV) dysfunction remains unknown.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of STR in patients with PH other than related to left-sided valve disease or reduced ejection fraction and across the individual WHO (World Health Organization) groups of PH.
METHODS: Patients with RV systolic pressures ≥50 mm Hg on echocardiography between 2010 and 2023 and m

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a valvular heart disease mostly associated with structural heart disease or pulmonary hypertension (PH). Rare cases of TR secondary to exposure to specific medications, such as dopamine agonists, have been described. A 50-year-old woman presented with a pituitary microprolactinoma (without surgical indication) and a history of pulmonary embolism (PE) in 2021 (risk factors included bromocriptine, which was switched to cabergoline). An echocardiogram performed one year after the PE showed no significant abnormalities. She was maintained on rivaroxaban 10 mg due to

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a leading cause of valvular heart disease worldwide, particularly in developing countries. The mitral and aortic valves are most often affected; however, tricuspid valve involvement has been observed in advanced cases.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a case of a patient with RHD with tricuspid valve involvement who successfully underwent transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR).
DISCUSSION: TTVR is a promising, less-invasive alternative treatment for patients with severe symptomatic tricuspid regurgitation deemed unsuitable for surgery. Despite t

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a clinically significant and increasingly recognized complication of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs, contributing to worsening morbidity and mortality. The development of PH in the context of MMVD is associated with increased symptom burden, including exercise intolerance, syncope, and respiratory distress, and has been correlated with reduced survival times. Echocardiography is the primary modality for detection and monitoring, relying on Doppler estimation of tricuspid regurgitation velocity, but limitations in sensitivity and accuracy remain. T

BACKGROUND: Interventional treatment of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a rapidly evolving field, but selecting patients most likely to benefit remains challenging. Currently, no dedicated or widely accepted risk score exists for transcatheter tricuspid valve interventions (TTVIs). In clinical practice, established scores such as Model for End-stage Liver Disease excluding INR (MELD-XI), European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II (EuroSCORE II), GLIDE (Gap, Location, Image quality, Density, and En-face tricuspid regurgitation morphology), Tricuspid Regurgitation Impact Score (TRI

Tricuspid valve infective endocarditis (TV-IE) in people who inject drugs (PWID) has become an increasingly important clinical and public health concern, driven largely by the expanding opioid epidemic. Although PWID with TV-IE are typically young and often lack major comorbidities, they experience disproportionately high rates of mortality, reinfection, and recurrent hospitalizations. Repeated intravenous injection introduces contaminated particulate matter and pathogens into the venous circulation, promoting microbial adherence to the tricuspid valve, with Staphylococcus aureus including met

BACKGROUND: Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER) improves TR severity and symptoms, yet survival benefit remains uncertain. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate 1-year outcomes after T-TEER and explore clinical and echocardiographic correlates of prognosis.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus was conducted through June 2025. Studies enrolling ≥100 patients undergoing T-TEER and reporting 1-year outcomes were included. Primary endpoints were 1-year all-caus

OBJECTIVES: The literature is sparse regarding outcomes after valvular surgery in patients with severe chronic rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to evaluate mid-term outcomes in patients with severe chronic RHD who underwent open-heart surgery in Ethiopia, and evaluate the durability of the operated valves during follow-up.
METHODS: This study implemented an observational design, with 104 patients screened for cardiac surgery, of whom 52 were excluded. Outcome measures and clinical and echocardiographic data after cardiac surgery were availabl

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is increasingly recognized as a condition associated with poor clinical outcomes, including reduced quality of life, progressive right-sided heart failure, and increased mortality. Its heterogeneous etiologies and systemic consequences, affecting both cardiac and extracardiac organs such as the kidneys and liver, make patient management particularly challenging. Accurate risk stratification and timely intervention are therefore essential. The 2025 European Society of Cardiology and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Guidelines acknowledge the multifac

Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are among the most common forms of congenital heart disease diagnosed in adulthood. Ostium secundum defects represent the majority of cases and may remain clinically silent for decades. Delayed diagnosis can lead to progressive right-sided cardiac chamber dilation, pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, and heart failure. The choice between percutaneous and surgical closure depends on anatomical characteristics such as defect size and the adequacy of surrounding septal rims. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman with hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hy

Arrhythmogenic mitral valve disease (AMVD) is a newly established entity that carries a high risk of developing ventricular arrhythmia ranging from premature ventricular contraction to sudden cardiac death. Therefore, there is an urgent need for risk prediction and stratification by using different imaging modalities. A 77-year-old patient presented with a syncopal episode. Physical examination was unremarkable. Resting electrocardiogram (ECG) was normal. Echocardiography showed mild systolic dysfunction and mild aortic stenosis. Seven days of Holter monitor recording demonstrated frequent epi

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is characterized by the formation of sterile vegetations on cardiac valves, typically in the setting of malignancy or systemic inflammatory states. These vegetations can cause valvular dysfunction and have a higher tendency to embolize relative to other vegetations, which may result in life-threatening complications. Some of the highest rates of malignancy-associated NBTE have been seen in pancreatic cancer. A review of the literature on pancreatic cancer-associated NBTE was conducted to better understand patient presentation, disease course/progres

Failure of tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER) with persistent severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is an increasingly encountered clinical scenario in contemporary structural heart disease treatment. In this setting, transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) is emerging as an effective therapeutic option for recurrent TR after T-TEER. However, the presence of pre-existing tricuspid edge-to-edge devices significantly alters valve geometry, creating a fixed multiple-orifice configuration that may impair coaxial device crossing, generate asymmetrical expansion forces, and

Carcinoid heart disease is a progressive right-sided valvulopathy caused by serotonin and other vasoactive mediators released by metastatic neuroendocrine tumours. As oncological therapies have extended survival, cardiac disease has become a leading determinant of mortality. Operative mortality has decreased to 5-6% in contemporary high-volume centres, and long-term survival appears increasingly determined by tumour biology rather than cardiac disease when surgery is appropriately timed. The principal determinant of operative outcome is preoperative right ventricular function; symptom-based re
