BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Mitral valve repair is the procedure of choice for severe degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR). The objective of this study was to review prospectively gathered echocardiographic and clinical results with mitral valve repair for degenerative disease.
METHODS: Between May 1995 and July 2004, 403 patients underwent mitral valve repair for degenerative disease (mean age 63 +/- 12 years, 72% males). Concomitant procedures included CABG (29%), radiofrequency left-sided maze procedure (8%), aortic valve replacement (6%), and tricuspid valve repair (4%).

A resurgence of endocarditis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa was seen in 10 injection drug users (IDUs) in Detroit between 2006 and 2008 (6 men, 4 women; mean age, 48.1 yr). In a retrospective study of cases of infective endocarditis (IE) observed in adult patients, the data of patients hospitalized for definite IE in the Cardiosurgery Unit of ARNAS-Civico in Palermo (Italy) from March 2003 to September 2006 were analysed. Between January 1990 and December 2006, 93 patients with infective endocarditis on native valves were operated in the active phase of the disease. We have performed a retrospective study of patients diagnosed with infective endocarditis due to Enterococcus in our hospital for a period of 12 years (1994-2005). We review clinical and microbiological aspects, therapy, and outcome. We found 12 cases that were 6 % of total endocarditis, and 7% of enterococcal bacteremia.
