The distribution of medically significant ticks in Vietnam requires ongoing monitoring. This study presents data on tick distribution and molecular screening for Borrelia spp. and Coxiella burnetii DNA. Ticks were collected from domestic animals and vegetation in four provinces over the period of 2024-2025. Species identification was performed based on morphology and confirmed by sequencing mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA genes. A total of 2347 ticks were collected, representing eight species from the genera Haemaphysalis, Rhipicephalus, and Amblyomma. The study provides new distribution record

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) represent a growing challenge to both animal and human health in Sudan. However, the absence of consolidated nationwide data limits accurate characterization of tick fauna, monitoring of shifts in species distribution, and detection of invasive species. This knowledge gap not only constrains understanding of vector ecology but also weakens efforts to link tick distribution with disease occurrence, thereby undermining targeted control strategies. Livestock TBDs, including theileriosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and lumpy skin disease, cause substantial econo

This article reports a case of acute Q fever in a 61-year-old man. The patient mainly presented with high fever and cough. Extensive multi-system investigations failed to identify an etiology. On the fourth day of admission, the diagnosis of acute Q fever was confirmed by rapid detection of Coxiella burnetii nucleic acid sequence by blood metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing (mNGS). With the treatment of intravenous omadacycline, the fever was controlled within 24 hours and the clinical symptoms significantly improved. Subsequent sequential therapy with oral doxycycline was administered, and

BACKGROUND: Neurological involvement in Q fever is rare, often presenting with non-specific symptoms and posing significant diagnostic challenges. We report a case of Q fever meningoencephalitis characterized by a relapse of neurological symptoms and atypical cerebrospinal fluid findings. In addition, we conducted a review of published English language cases of acute Q fever with neurological manifestations reported over the past 35 years.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old previously healthy woman presented with acute aphasia and somnolence. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed lymphocytic pl

Coxiella burnetii is the only member of the order Legionellales known to primarily infect vertebrates. The Q fever pathogen is also unusual in that it replicates within an acidified phagolysosome-like vacuole. The evolutionary origins of the virulence determinants underlying this lifestyle remain unclear. More broadly, little is known about how virulence-related traits arise in specialized intracellular lineages, where access to foreign-origin DNA may be more episodic. To address this question, we used Legionellales-wide comparative phylogenomics to reconstruct the gain and loss of traits affe

In recent years, several large outbreaks have shown that Q fever is a serious disease that unfortunately is underreported in Europe. Furthermore, no seroprevalence data for Coxiella burnetii in the general German population are available. The aim of this study is to examine the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in a normal, non-risk population in Germany. To this end, blood donors in the federal states Baden-Wuerttemberg and Hesse were screened for C. burnetii-specific antibodies as well as associated risk factors. Of over 5000 participants without prior knowledge of a C. burnetii infection, 153 (

This longitudinal study investigated C. burnetii dynamics and the associated microbiota after vaccination in aborted and normal-delivery goats and bucks following a Q fever outbreak. Fecal, milk, vaginal, preputial, nasopharyngeal, environmental (qPCR and 16S rRNA), and blood samples (16S rRNA and serology) were analyzed. Before vaccination, over 70% of animals were seropositive, with qPCR positivity in all females and half of the males. Seroconversion remained complete until the second kidding season and reached approximately 90% by the third kidding season. After primary vaccination, a signi

Chronic Q fever can present as culture-negative aortic endograft infection with osteomyelitis. Plasma microbial cell-free DNA sequencing unexpectedly detected Coxiella burnetii before serology, prompting exposure reassessment and targeted therapy. Later operative cultures grew Eikenella corrodens, underscoring the need to pair molecular results with serology and source-control microbiology.

In Hong Kong, the average annual incidence of Q-fever in humans was one case per year from 2008 to 2023. The prevalence of C. burnetii infection in animals in Hong Kong is not reported. This study aimed to identify potential domestic and wild animal reservoirs of C. burnetii to inform human exposure risks from local animals. A cross-sectional study was conducted to detect infection and/or exposure using biological samples from 1118 animals including 377 ruminants (200 feral cattle, 35 water buffalo, 142 goats), 216 rats and 525 owned or unowned dogs and cats between 2020 and 2023. Q fever is a neglected zoonotic disease that poses a significant threat to the economy, animal health, and public health sectors worldwide, particularly in developing countries such as Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, where livestock production is the primary source of livelihood and food security for many communities, the implications of Q fever are particularly concerning. Despite its importance as a health issue for both animals and humans, there is insufficient national-level consolidated evidence regarding the burden of Q fever in ticks, domestic ruminants, and humans in Ethiopia. Therefore, this m

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, leads to debilitating human infections that are often recalcitrant to antibiotics. The development of new medical countermeasures is critical, as the only available vaccine has significant limitations that prevent its widespread or rapid use. To address this, we characterized aerosol C. burnetii infection in 16 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis), providing the first detailed pathological description of Q fever pneumonia in a nonhuman primate model. Following exposure, all animals developed clinical signs consistent with human Q fever, including sust

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, remains an important zoonotic disease with significant implications for animal health, livestock production, and public health. Epidemiological data regarding the circulation of C. burnetii in Romania remain limited, particularly in the western region of the country. This study aimed to assess the observed seropositivity and geographic distribution of anti-C. burnetii antibodies among sampled small ruminants from Western Romania. A cross-sectional sero-epidemiological survey was conducted using 546 serum samples collected from sheep (n = 451) and goats (n

Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii), a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium, is the etiological agent of Q fever. Timely diagnosis and initiation of appropriate therapy are critical for favorable clinical outcomes, particularly in cases of acute Q fever. This report describes a case of C. burnetii infection in a 35-year-old male electrical grid engineer who presented with a 4-day history of febrile illness, peaking at 40.0 °C. Associated symptoms included night sweats, chills, anorexia, nausea, non-productive cough, and chest tightness. During hospitalization, the patient also developed

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP) is a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), contributing significantly to hospitalization rates and mortality. In recent years, infections caused by uncommon pathogens such as Coxiella burnetii have increasingly been identified, posing significant challenges to managing PDAP.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 62-year-old male hospitalized for recurrent PDAP unresponsive to empirical antibiotics (meropenem, later meropenem/vancomycin). Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of peritoneal fluid identified C. burnetii

INTRODUCTION: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is increasingly recognised in Africa, though its burden remains underestimated due to limited surveillance and underreporting. Reliable prevalence and epidemiological data are crucial for understanding the disease's distribution, identifying high-risk populations and developing effective control strategies, necessitating this systematic review.
METHODS: The review protocol is registered in prospectively registered systematic reviews (PROSPERO) (ID: CRD42025625366). Research questions and inclusion/exclusion criteria were developed using the

BACKGROUND: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a globally distributed zoonosis that remains largely underdiagnosed in Algeria. Since its first description in 1935, fragmented data have accumulated across human, animal, and vector hosts without comprehensive synthesis. This systematic review summarizes all available information on the occurrence of C. burnetii in Algeria from 1935 to 2025, across human, animal and ectoparasite compartments, and critically discusses potential reservoirs, vectors and knowledge gaps.
METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Sci

Q fever is a zoonotic disease associated with reproductive losses in ruminants. This study investigated a 2025 outbreak on a Boer goat breeding farm in South Korea and compared its molecular characteristics with those of a separate 2024 outbreak. Conventional PCR targeting the IS1111 insertion element was used to test 87 goats, three female farm dogs, and four barn-level composite environmental samples. Positive goat samples underwent multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis and multispacer sequence typing. Coxiella burnetii was detected in 60 of 87 goats (69.0%) and in one enviro

OBJECTIVES: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is an underrecognized zoonotic infection with diverse clinical manifestations. The nonspecific nature and slow progression of Q fever frequently delay diagnosis, sometimes leading to severe or even fatal outcomes. This study describes 32 patients diagnosed with Q fever over an 18-month period in a previously unreported region, highlighting the emerging awareness of this neglected zoonosis.
METHODS: Patients with seropositive C. burnetii Phase I/II IgM and/or IgG antibodies between October 2023 and March 2025 (18-month period) were included. Ca
