BACKGROUND: Fractures related to osteoporosis and low bone mineral density lead to substantial morbidity, mortality, and cost to individuals and health systems. Here we present the most up-to-date global, regional, and national estimates of the contribution of low bone mineral density to the burden of fractures from falls and additional categories of injuries from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021.
METHODS: The burden of low bone mineral density was estimated from 1990 to 2020 in terms of years lived with disability (YLDs), disability-adjusted life yea

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic Stroke in young adults is a real public health problem; it's a major cause of disability, alters quality of life and has a great socio-economic impact.
AIM: determine risk factors and specify the etiology of arterial ischemic stroke in young Tunisian adults.
METHODS: In this 5 years retrospective study (2015-2020), we included all young adults (18-50 years) admitted for arterial ischemic stroke (AIS). Risk factors were registered and analyzed. All patients were investigated using a standard protocol: biological tests, brain imaging, carotid ultrasound and cardiac asses

CLINICAL QUESTION: In adult patients with inflammatory bowel disease, inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, psoriatic arthritis), or psoriasis taking biologic drugs, does proactive therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) improve outcomes as compared with standard care?
CONTEXT AND CURRENT PRACTICE: Standard care for immune mediated inflammatory diseases includes prescribing biologic drugs at pre-determined doses. Dosing may be adjusted reactively, for example with increased disease activity. In proactive TDM, serum drug levels and anti-drug antibodies are measured irrespe

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) has shown its important role on reducing the burden of heart diseases. However, no study has provided a comprehensive worldwide view of the data regarding HL and heart diseases. The study aimed to provide insight into: (1) the intellectual structure, (2) research trends, and (3) research gaps on HL and heart diseases; and (4) to explore HL scales commonly utilized in heart studies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Studies related to HL and heart diseases were retrieved from Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. All publications published between 2000 and 2021 were include

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, despite its demand is high, heart surgery is not always accessible to the neediest patients. We aimed to describe the early outcomes of heart surgeries that were performed by a local cardiac surgical team in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
METHODS: Data were collected through chart abstraction of patients who underwent heart surgery from the period of June 2017 to July 2021 by the same local cardiac surgical team at 3 centers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for Windows version 20.0.
RESULTS: A tota

The use of broad consent for genomics research raises important ethical questions for the conduct of genomics research, including relating to its acceptability to research participants and comprehension of difficult scientific concepts. To explore these and other challenges, we conducted a study using qualitative methods with participants enrolled in an H3Africa Rheumatic Heart Disease genomics study (the RHDGen network) in Zambia to explore their views on broad consent, sample and data sharing and secondary use. In-depth interviews were conducted with RHDGen participants (n = 18), study staff

Monocytosis is associated with chronic infections such as tuberculosis or endocarditis as well as rheumatic and myeloproliferative disorders. Monocytes are also involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and stroke. The value of monocytosis as a prognostic marker in different diagnostic groups in the emergency setting, however, has not been investigated so far.The aim of the article is to study monocytosis as an outcome factor in the emergency setting. In a Swiss register study, we analyzed monocyte counts in 4238 patients aged >18 years who were admitted to the e

AIM: To specify the course and outcomes of arthritides associated with streptococcal infection (AASI).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The trial comprised 60 patients with arthritis (mean age 26.8 +/- 14.0). The patients met the following criteria: arthritis, elevated (< 500 U) titers of antistreptolisin-0 in the absence of heart disorders detected at Doppler-echocardiography (2D-echoCG), urogenital infection, Yersinia infection, psoriasis. In addition to routine clinical tests, the following investigations were made: tests for alloantigen of B-lymphocytes D8/17 and antigen HLA-B27, antibodies to polys

The correctness of selection, coding and registration of underlying cause-of-death is important for the quality of mortality statistics. One measure to improve quality is the query to the certifier for verification of the underlying cause-of-death. In Finland, 3478 death certificates, 7.1% of total 49074 certifications in 1995, were considered questionable by statisticians. The expert panel at Statistics Finland was able to resolve 2813 (80.9%) of them. However, 665 (19.1%) certificates needed to be further queried from the certifier. Of these, 318 (47.8%) were re-assigned to another ICD-9 cat

Children exposed to low-dose radiation are often treated in sanatoria with mineral baths. Of the latter balneoprocedures widely practiced are sodium chloride (SC) baths with mineralization 20-30 g/l. Mineralization 40 g/l is less frequently used. To specify changes in the function of cardiovascular system induced by SC baths of different concentration (40 versus 20 g/l) 131 senior schoolchildren exposed to low-dose radiation or other environmental pollutants were examined both after a single balneological procedure and after the course treatment (maximum 10 procedures). The baths lasted 8-15 m

A study of 100 coronary bypass and cardiac valvular surgery patients investigated whether preoperative brain damage, as measured by the Conceptual Level Analogy Test (CLAT), is a major risk factor for postoperative psychiatric symptoms and mortality. Three cognitive psychological tests, including the CLAT, and psychatric interviews were given preoperatively, postoperatively, and at 18-month follow-up. Surgical outcome was specified as: Catastrophic Outcome (death or severe stroke), Psychiatric Complications, or Good Outcome (survival with no psychiatric complications). Inhospital outcome relat
