BACKGROUND: Hypertensive nephropathy (HTN) arises from chronic hypertension and may potentially result in severe renal failure. Due to the absence of reliable and efficient biomarkers, the diagnosis of HTN is constrained. Mitochondrial-associated genes are closely associated with the pathogenesis of HTN. Our study aims to find new reliable diagnostic and therapeutic targets for HTN.
METHODS: We obtained the dataset GSE37460 from the GEO database and performed Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) to analyze the expression modules of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identif

Hypertensive nephropathy continues to be a major cause of end-stage renal disease and poses a significant global health burden. Despite the staggering development of research in hypertensive nephropathy, scientists and clinicians can only seek out useful information through articles and reviews, it remains a hurdle for them to quickly track the trend in this field. This study uses the bibliometric method to identify the evolutionary development and recent hotspots of hypertensive nephropathy. The Web of Science Core Collection database was used to extract publications on hypertensive nephropat

Kidney disease is a critical and potentially life-threatening degenerative condition that poses a significant global public health challenge due to its elevated rates of morbidity and mortality. It manifests primarily in two distinct clinical forms: acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The development of these conditions hinges on a multitude of factors, including the etiological agents and the presence of coexisting medical conditions. Despite disparities in their underlying pathogenic mechanisms, both AKI and CKD can progress to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). This ad

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive nephrosclerosis (HN) ranks as one of the most frequent causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but its very existence has repeatedly been called into question, especially in young adults. Its diagnostic framework is established chiefly on non-specific clinical criteria, and its defining histopathological set of features is in fact shared by numerous other conditions. Genetic testing based on exome sequencing (ES) has emerged as a comprehensive tool to detect Mendelian diseases in timely fashion in nephrology, with a significant number of re-established diagnoses. Heart failure (HF) constitutes a major determinant of outcome in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The main pattern of HF in CKD patients is preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is a frequent pathophysiological mechanism and specific preclinical manifestation of HFpEF. Therefore, exploring and intervention of the factors associated with risk for LVDD is of great importance in reducing the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease (CVD) complications in CKD patients. We designed this retrospective cross-sectional study to collect cl

A man in his early 30s presented with sudden-onset respiratory distress, haemoptysis and reduced urine output. He was in volume overload with a blood pressure recording of 240/180 mm Hg. Pulmonary renal syndrome was suspected and he was initiated on plasmapheresis, followed by steroid pulse therapy. Chest radiography and the presence of fragmented red cells on the peripheral smear were unexplained. These were later explained by hypertensive nephropathy and thrombotic microangiopathy changes on renal biopsy. His respiratory and haematological parameters improved with blood pressure control. Mal

Secondary nephrosis is a series of chronic kidney diseases secondary to other underlying diseases, mainly manifesting as structural and functional abnormalities of the kidneys and metabolic disorders. It is one of the important causes of end-stage renal disease, with high morbidity and significant harm. Iron is an essential metal element in human cells, and ferroptosis is a non-traditional form of iron-dependent cell death, and its main mechanisms include iron accumulation, lipid metabolism disorders, abnormal amino acid metabolism, and damage to the antioxidant system. Recently studies have f

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem characterized by progressive renal fibrosis and excessive extracellular matrix deposition. Oxidative stress and epigenetic regulation, particularly through microRNAs (miRNAs), play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of CKD. In this study, we investigated the role of urinary miR-144-3p, which is upregulated in rats with CKD induced by diabetes and hypertension, in renal fibrosis progression, particularly its regulation of the nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway. Our findings revealed elevated miR-144-3p levels and red

AIM: Hypertensive nephropathy is a common complication of hypertension. However, no effective measures are currently available to prevent the progression of renal insufficiency. Gasdermin D (GSDMD) is a crucial mediator of pyroptosis that induces an excessive inflammatory response. In the present study, we aimed to determine the effect of GSDMD on the pathogenesis of hypertensive nephropathy, which may provide new insights into the treatment of hypertensive nephropathy.
METHODS: C57BL/6 (wild-type, WT) and Gsdmd knockout (Gsdmd-/-) mice were subcutaneously infused with angiotensin II (Ang II)

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury involves inflammation and intrinsic renal damage, and is a common complication of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Baseline chronic kidney disease (CKD) confers an increased mortality risk. We determined the renal long-term outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with baseline CKD, and the risk factors prompting renal replacement therapy (RRT) initiation and mortality.
METHODOLOGY: We included 77 patients (median age was 67.1 ± 13.7 years) with a history of renal failure at baseline and recovery from COVID-19 at our institution, in a retrospective analysi

For several years, blood pressure control and blocking of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) represented the cornerstones of chronic kidney disease (CKD) treatment. Cardiovascular outcome trials with sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) suggested that these agents can effectively delay the progression of CKD in these individuals. A major nephroprotective effect of canagliflozin was also shown in a renal outcome trial in patients with proteinuric diabetic CKD.
