Between September 1955 and January 1990, 94 pediatric patients were managed for renovascular hypertension caused by renal artery occlusive disease. Patients (50 boys and 44 girls) were aged 4 days to 17 years (median age: 7 years). In this study, the effect of the antihypertensive agents nifedipine (4.5 mg/day) and hydralazine (50-200 mg/l of drinking water) on the progression of chronic renal failure and scarring was evaluated in rats submitted to subtotal (5/6) nephrectomy (SNx). The effect of blood pressure reduction was studied in groups of rats fed either a medium-protein diet (24%) or high-protein diet (50%). SNx rats fed a high-protein diet had significantly higher levels of proteinuria and severer renal scarring at sacrifice (120 days after SNx). Nifedipine reduced proteinuria in SNx rats fed a high-protein diet.

Torasemide (torsemide) is a high-ceiling loop diuretic which acts on the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle to promote rapid and marked excretion of water, sodium and chloride. 12 patients underwent resection of a thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm. There were 10 men and 2 women, ranging in age from 54-78 years (mean 65). Aortic arteriosclerosis was the primary etiology in 11, and Behcet's disease in the other 1. Clinical and necropsy findings are described in 40 patients who had aortic dissection with the entrance tear in the descending thoracic aorta. Their ages at death ranged from 39 to 91 years (mean, 66 years); 24 (60%) were men and 16 (40%) were women. Systemic hypertension was present by history in 33 patients (83%) and the hearts were of increased weight in 78%. Between March 1982 and March 1991, 225 heart transplantations (HTx) have been performed in 220 patients suffering end stage cardiac disease. Thirteen percent were females and 87% were males. Age range was from 5 to 68 years. Acute rejection of renal allografts was treated with the monoclonal antibody OKT3 given intravenously. A variety of adverse events were observed on days 1 and 2 following treatment with 5 mg/day OKT3 for 10 days including heart failure, pulmonary oedema and hypertension.
