The plague of Athens: epidemiology and paleopathology.

In 430 BC, a plague struck the city of Athens, which was then under siege by Sparta during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). In the next 3 years, most of the population was infected, and perhaps as many as 75,000 to 100,000 people, 25% of the city's population, died. The Athenian general and historian Thucydides left an eye-witness account of this plague and a detailed description to allow future generations to identify the disease should it break out again. Because of the importance of Thucydides and Athens in Western history and culture, the Plague of Athens has taken a prominent position

Infection of endothelial cells with virulent Rickettsia prowazekii increases the transmigration of leukocytes.

Rickettsia prowazekii, the etiologic agent of epidemic typhus, infects vascular endothelium, leading to vasculitis and tissue infiltration of leukocytes. Murine and human endothelial cells (ECs) were infected with R. prowazekii, including the virulent Breinl strain and the attenuated Madrid E strain. The transendothelial migration (TM) of murine and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) across ECs infected with Breinl organisms was significantly increased compared with that for uninfected ECs or for ECs infected with attenuated organisms, demonstrating that increased TM was related

Epidemic typhus.

Epidemic typhus is transmitted to human beings by the body louse Pediculus humanus corporis. The disease is still considered a major threat by public-health authorities, despite the efficacy of antibiotics, because poor sanitary conditions are conducive to louse proliferation. Until recently, Rickettsia prowazekii, the causal agent, was thought to be confined to human beings and their body lice. Since 1975, R prowazekii infection in human beings has been related to contact with the flying squirrel Glaucomys volans in the USA. Moreover, Brill-Zinsser disease, a relapsed form of epidemic typhus

[The role of Turkish physicians in the vaccination against typhus during the years of World War I].

During the years of World War I, several severe typhus epidemics were seen in Erzurum and nearby cities. A total of 164 health officers, 125 of whom were physicians, struggled against the epidemic in the region but also they lost their lives due to typhus. Vaccination against typhus was one of the means of fighting the epidemic. However, there were some claims that a small group of Turkish physicians injected typhus-contaminated serum into Armenian civilians during World War I, and that this should be accepted as a form of biological warfare against Armenian civilians. The purpose of this arti

[Louse-borne typhus potential and new technologies in prediction of epidemic louse-borne typhus outburst].

Features of louse-borne typhus in Russia in the middle of 20th century are considered. Study of the infection source, blood serum in patient after epidemic louse-borne typhus (ELBT) and agent (louse) was performed on territory with high morbidity of pediculosis and ELBT in the years of 2nd world war. New materials of seroimmunological examinations are represented. Priority data of lice morphology based on morphometrical data of lice, collected in Russia and world collection in Berlin are shown. Methods of ELBT prediction are given, special attention is paid to development of mathematic prognos

Medical science in the light of the Holocaust: Departing from a post-war paper by Ludwik Fleck.

In scholarly debates, Ludwik Fleck's post-war paper 'Problemy naukoznawstwa [Problems of the Science of Science]', published in 1946, has been taken unanimously to illustrate the epistemology expounded in his monograph Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact. The paper has also been seen to support parts of the received view of Fleck, notably that he manufactured an anti-typhus vaccine while imprisoned in Buchenwald. However, a different narrative emerges when comparing Fleck's paper with other accounts, also published in 1946 and written by other prisoners alluded to by Fleck in his pape

Louse- and flea-borne rickettsioses: biological and genomic analyses.

In contrast to 15 or more validated and/or proposed tick-borne spotted fever group species, only three named medically important rickettsial species are associated with insects. These insect-borne rickettsiae are comprised of two highly pathogenic species, Rickettsia prowazekii (the agent of epidemic typhus) and R. typhi (the agent of murine typhus), as well as R. felis, a species with unconfirmed pathogenicity. Rickettsial association with obligate hematophagous insects such as the human body louse (R. prowazekii transmitted by Pediculus h. humanus) and several flea species (R. typhi and R. f

Emerging and re-emerging tick-transmitted rickettsial and ehrlichial infections.

Recently in the field of rickettsiology, an explosion of new isolates of pathogens have received species designation and new disease names, all of which have been relatively neglected by primary care and infectious disease physicians. A broad group of other tick-associated rickettsial and ehrlichial agents of unknown pathogenicity exist (eg, R amblyommii) that may cause confusion in interpreting serologic surveys or a single elevated antibody titer. Rickettsial and ehrlichial diseases are remarkable for their uniform susceptibility to doxycycline but are clinically difficult to distinguish fro

"Air, sun, water": ideology and activities of OZE (Society for the Preservation of the Health of the Jewish Population) during the interwar period.

This paper follows the social and political history of OZE, the Society for the Preservation of the Health of the Jewish Population, in the interwar period. We focus on two campaigns against typhus and favus, the first two disease oriented efforts by OZE, in order to reconstruct the operational approaches, considerations and obstacles faced by OZE as a Jewish organization and transnational participant in the discourse on the health and politics of minorities between two world wars. The analysis of OZE as a transnational Jewish relief organization has a wider significance as an example of inter

Differential patterns of endothelial and leucocyte activation in 'typhus-like' illnesses in Laos and Thailand.

Scrub typhus is responsible for a large proportion of undifferentiated fevers in south-east Asia. The cellular tropism and pathophysiology of the causative agent, Orientia tsutsugamushi, remain poorly understood. We measured endothelial and leucocyte activation by soluble cell adhesion molecule enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in 242 Lao and Thai patients with scrub or murine typhus, leptospirosis, dengue, typhoid and uncomplicated falciparum malaria on admission to hospital. Soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) levels were lowest in dengue, sL-selectin highest in scrub typhus with a high sE-sel

[Epidemics in nortthern Basque: black death and the Spanish influenza].

The paper studies the great epidemics that have affected Europe from the middle ages until the 20th century. A special emphasis is put on in the mortality of the Black Death in 1348 (500 per thousand), the smallpox in the 18th century (150 per thousand), the spotted fever in the end of the 18th century (50 per thousand), the cholera pandemic in the 19th century (25.5 - 62.7 per thousand), the tuberculosis in the end of the 19th century (5.3 per thousand) and the mortality that the Spanish influenza produced in the beginnings of the 20th century (12.1 per thousand) in the Basque Country.
