Acute pericarditis is generally a benign condition, yet 15-30% of patients will develop recurrent pericarditis. Standard first-line therapy combines non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin with colchicine, which reduces but does not eliminate the risk of recurrence. Patients presenting with a high inflammatory burden, subacute evolution or large pericardial effusion are particularly prone to recurrence, and corticosteroid exposure - still frequent in clinical practice - further increases this risk. Over the last decade, the central role of interleukin-1 (IL-1) in pericardial inflammat

Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm is a rare complication following infective pericarditis in children. We report a very rare case of dual left ventricular pseudoaneurysms in a 4-year-old girl, who was diagnosed following osteomyelitis of the right femur with disseminated infection. In the absence of cardiac symptoms, cardiac imaging including echocardiography and computed tomography helped to diagnose the dual ventricular pseudoaneurysms. The patient was successfully managed with urgent surgical repair of the two pseudoaneurysms without any complication.

BACKGROUND: Pericardial effusion (PE) is a rare condition in neonates and usually due to central venous catheters. Infective pericarditis is an extremely rare condition in neonates.
METHODS: We describe a case of a preterm neonate with Escherichia coli pericarditis.
RESULTS: A preterm female neonate born at 34 weeks of gestation with a birth weight of 1600 grams was admitted because of respiratory distress. The patient was managed using a high-flow nasal cannula. She did not receive a central venous catheter or antibiotics. The outcome was good and the patient was discharged on day 14 of lif

Pericarditis may be a complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and should be considered as a differential for persistent chest pain following a PCI. In this report, we present a male in his 60s, who developed pericarditis after a primary PCI for an anterior ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). He had an uncomplicated PCI to left anterior descending artery, and was discharged as per standard procedure 48 hours post-procedure. On that same evening, the patient re-presented to hospital with different chest pain and fever. Electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed anterior ST eleva

BACKGROUND: Azacitidine is used to treat myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It acts as a cytosine analog and DNA methyltransferase inhibitor, inducing DNA hypomethylation to reverse epigenetic modifications and restore normal gene expression. However, adverse events (AEs) associated with azacitidine are mainly reported in clinical trials, with limited real-world evidence. This study aims to assess the AE profile of azacitidine by utilizing data from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and WHO-VigiAccess databases.

Diseases of the pericardium encompass a spectrum of conditions, including acute and recurrent pericarditis, where inflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations. Anti-inflammatory therapy indeed forms the cornerstone of treating these conditions: NSAIDs, colchicine, and corticosteroids (as a second-line treatment) are recommended by current guidelines. However, these medications come with several contraindications and are not devoid of adverse effects. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on the role of the inflammasome and potential therapeutic

Background Pericardial diseases manifest in various clinical forms, including acute pericarditis, constrictive pericarditis, pericardial effusion, and cardiac tamponade, with acute pericarditis being the most prevalent. These conditions significantly contribute to mortality rates. Therefore, this article aimed to analyze mortality trends in the Brazilian population based on age and sex, shedding light on the impact of pericardial diseases on public health outcomes. Methods This is a retrospective time-series analysis of pericardial disease mortality rates in Brazil (2000-2022). Data was obtai

Acute pericarditis is a serious and potentially fatal disease in which a diagnostic workup is not always straightforward. Hiatal hernia, on the other hand, is often asymptomatic and can be easily diagnosed if symptomatic. In advanced forms of hiatal hernia, oppression of intrathoracic organs and heart failure can occur. In uncommon cases, the large intestine can also be translocated into the chest cavity, and very rarely, it can be perforated with the development of mediastinitis and/or pericarditis. We report the case of a 74-year-old female with a 1.5-month history of chest pain with elevate

BACKGROUND: Acute autoimmune pericarditis (AAP) is an uncommon disease with diverse etiology. Data regarding AAP diagnosis and outcomes are scant.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to describe the diagnosis and the rates of in-hospital mortality, cardiac tamponade, and readmission of AAP.
METHODS: This study used a nationwide Japanese claim-based database to identify patients with AAP from April 2016 to March 2020 compared with patients with acute idiopathic pericarditis (AIP).
RESULTS: Of 20,469 hospitalized patients with acute pericarditis, 170 had AAP and 5,027 had AIP of new onset. The diag

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by widespread immune dysregulation that affects multiple organ systems, including the skin and cardiovascular system. The crosstalk between different cell death pathways-such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and neutrophil extracellular trap (NETosis), plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of SLE, influencing both cutaneous and cardiac manifestations. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is one of the most common early signs of SLE, affecting up to 80% of patients. CLE presents in several forms, including acute, suba

Periodontal diseases are well-known background for infective endocarditis. Here, we show that pericardial effusion or pericarditis might have origin also in periodontal diseases. An 86-year-old man with well-controlled hypertension and diabetes mellitus developed asymptomatic increase in pericardial effusion. Two weeks previously, he took oral new quinolone antibiotics for a week because he had painful periodontitis along a dental bridge in the mandibular teeth on the right side and presented cheek swelling. The sputum was positive for Streptococcus species. He was healthy and had a small volu

Background/Objectives: Constrictive pericarditis very rarely causes protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) induced by secondary intestinal lymphangiectasia. This study thoroughly reviewed the literature to shed light on the clinical management of PLE provoked by intestinal lymphangiectasia following constrictive pericarditis. Methods: We performed a PubMed search using the keywords enteropathy, protein-losing enteropathy, pericarditis, acute pericarditis, pericardial effusion, recurrent pericarditis, constrictive pericarditis, noninfectious pericarditis, idiopathic pericarditis, and infective perica

OBJECTIVES: This cohort study describes a systemic phenotype of pericarditis, comparing this phenotype with other forms of pericarditis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients in our center were enrolled in a prospectively maintained registry from 2019 to 2022. 412 patients with idiopathic recurrent pericarditis were analyzed. "Systemic inflammatory" subset was defined as the presence of all the following criteria: fever ≥38C°, CRP ≥2 times normal values, pleural effusion detected with any imaging techniques. The absence of any of the 3 criteria was defined as "isolated" subset.
RESULTS: We found th

Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS), also referred to as drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition induced by drug hypersensitivity that leads to significant morbidity and mortality and often occurs in patients undergoing combination antibiotic therapy. Due to a recent increase in the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, the occurrence of vancomycin-induced DiHS/DRESS has increased rapidly. However, because of insufficient pharmacogenetic data on vancomycin-induced drug eruptions

The field of inflammatory disease of the heart or "cardio-immunology" is rapidly evolving due to the wider use of non-invasive diagnostic tools able to detect and monitor myocardial inflammation. In acute myocarditis, recent data on the use of immunomodulating therapies have been reported both in the setting of systemic autoimmune disorders and in the setting of isolated forms, especially in patients with specific histology (e.g., eosinophilic myocarditis) or with an arrhythmicburden. A role for immunosuppressive therapies has been also shown in severe cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-

UNLABELLED: SARS-CoV-2 infection can present in different clinical forms, most commonly as bilateral pneumonia, but also with pericardial/myocardial involvement. Cardiac involvement in COVID-19 is associated with worse outcomes. The authors report a case of myopericarditis as the primary manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a 20-year-old male patient with no known cardiovascular (CV) disorders or risk factors. The patient presented with pleuritic chest pain and high fever, with no respiratory symptoms. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiogram changes were consistent with pericarditis; co

Tufted angioma and kaposiform hemangioendothelioma are considered to represent two ends of the spectrum of benign vascular neoplasms that predominantly present during infancy or early childhood. We report a rare case of a 5-month-old infant with complicated vascular neoplasm involving the pericardial cavity and skin over cervical region, masquerading as infective pericarditis with cellulitis. The patient responded dramatically to therapy with oral prednisolone and sirolimus, with a significant reduction of size of skin lesions and complete resolution of pericardial effusion over 8 weeks. PURPOSE: How completely do hospital discharge diagnoses identify cases of myopericarditis after an mRNA vaccine?
METHODS: We assembled a cohort 12-39 year-old patients, insured by Kaiser Permanente Northwest, who received at least one dose of an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) between December 2020 and October 2021. We followed them for up to 30 days after their second dose of an mRNA vaccine to identify encounters for myocarditis, pericarditis or myopericarditis. We compared two identification methods: A method that searched all encounter diagnoses using a brief text description (e

BACKGROUND: The BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccine has been shown to be safe with regard to risk for severe cardiovascular events (such as myocardial infarction [MI], pulmonary embolism [PE], and stroke) in persons aged 75 years or older. Less is known about the safety of other COVID-19 vaccines or outcomes in younger populations.
OBJECTIVE: To assess short-term risk for severe cardiovascular events (excluding myocarditis and pericarditis) after COVID-19 vaccination in France's 46.5 million adults younger than 75 years.
DESIGN: Self-controlled case series method adapted to event-dependent ex

OBJECTIVES: As of December, 1st, 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2, resulted in more than 1 472 917 deaths worldwide and death toll is still increasing exponentially. Many COVID-19 infected people are asymptomatic or experience moderate symptoms and recover without medical intervention. However, older people and those with comorbid hypertension, diabetes, obesity, or heart disease are at higher risk of mortality. Because current therapeutic options for COVID-19 patients are limited specifically for this elderly population at risk, Biophytis is developing BIO101 (20
