We studied the malaria transmission dynamics in Kassena Nankana district (KND), a site in northern Ghana proposed for testing malaria vaccines. Intensive mosquito sampling for 1 year using human landing catches in three micro-ecological sites (irrigated, lowland and rocky highland) yielded 18 228 mosquitoes. Anopheles gambiae s.l. and Anopheles funestus constituted 94.3% of the total collection with 76.8% captured from the irrigated communities. Other species collected but in relatively few numbers were Anopheles pharoensis (5.4%) and Anopheles rufipes (0.3%). Molecular analysis of 728 An. gam

Pericardial cysts are rare, benign, congenital anomalies of the pericardium, usually located within the right cardiophrenic space, often discovered incidentally during imaging performed for unrelated reasons. They usually do not cause symptoms and are detected by chance. Chest X-ray, echocardiography, and chest computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are useful diagnostic tools. Nevertheless, after safe diagnostic, management options include conservative management with follow-up, percutaneous aspiration of the cyst, and excision of the cyst (direct invasive therapeutic ap

INTRODUCTION: Purulent pericarditis is a subtype of acute pericarditis with a high mortality even when adequately treated. Standard therapy is a combination of antibiotics and drainage, which can be more or less invasive. This is a case report of a patient with purulent pericarditis where cardiac surgery via sternotomy for thorough debridement and lavage was required for complete infection control.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old man with a history of injected and inhaled drug use was admitted with a large pericardial effusion, and 700 mL of pus was percutaneously drained. After being starte

Limited knowledge and variability in findings exist regarding the resolution of cardiovascular outcomes following Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). We conducted a systematic review to estimate the frequency of cardiovascular outcomes following MIS-C. A systematic search was conducted in Pubmed/Medline, Scopus, Embase, SciELO, LILACS, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and medRxiv were searched up to February 2024. We included studies reporting cardiovascular events that began in acute MIS-C and persisted after discharge. Screening and data extraction were performed by indep

Chylothorax and chylopericardium are rare in children and are typically associated with cardiothoracic surgery, congenital lymphatic abnormalities, or malignancy. Traumatic chylous effusions are particularly uncommon. We report an 11-year-old boy who developed extensive cervical and upper chest swelling following a minor firecracker blast injury. Subsequent imaging revealed large chylous pleural and pericardial effusions. Persistent high-output chyle loss despite exhaustive conservative therapy necessitated thoracic duct embolisation, which successfully resolved the effusions. This case highli

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular lead (LVL) implantation can be challenging in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT). Therefore, contrast is commonly used to visualize the coronary venous system. However, contrast use is correlated with substantial risks such as contrast-induced nephropathy and anaphylactic reaction. Case studies suggest feasibility of LVL implantation without coronary sinus (CS) venography. PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the procedure characteristics, outcome, and safety of contrast-free and contrast-aided LVL implantation. METHODS: 346 LVL implantations performed between 2017 an

RATIONALE: Amyloidosis is a rare, clinically heterogeneous disease, which makes its diagnosis difficult. The relationship between amyloidosis and gene mutations is insufficiently understood. We report a case of sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase 1 (SGPL1) mutation-related amyloidosis, and review the related literature.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 5-month history of renal dysfunction and abdominal distension, aggravated since 2 days. Five months ago, the patient was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, with liver dysfunction and abdominal distension. His sy

Osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor, was developed to overcome resistance from EGFR-mutant non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While it offers significant therapeutic benefits, reports have linked Osimertinib to cardiotoxic effects. This study aims to clarify the direct cardiotoxicity of Osimertinib by reviewing clinical trials and cohort studies involving Osimertinib monotherapy compared to other EGFR inhibitors. A search was conducted in online databases. Measured outcomes included risk of heart failure (HF), myocardial infarction (MI), decline i

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are a common cause of chronic renal disease and usually manifest either antenatally or in the early years of life. Solitary Kidney with Renal Dysplasia presents early in life due to regular antenatal sonographic scans. The rarity of diagnosis being deferred until adulthood has important implications when there is prematurity and other associated congenital anomalies, such as Congenital Heart Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic infantile arterial calcification is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterised by extensive calcification and proliferation of the intimal layer of the large and medium sized arteries.
METHODS AND OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis is usually made at autopsy or in the neonatal period, when there is cardiac failure. Prenatal diagnosis is possible in the latter half of pregnancy when there are hyperechoic vessel walls, hypertrophied ventricular musculature, and nonimmune fetal hydrops. The number of cases diagnosed before birth is low.
RESULTS: This study presents a 27-w

Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) remains a standard treatment for locally advanced esophageal cancer, yet the approach poses significant cardiotoxic risks due to the proximity of the esophagus to cardiac structures. This systematic review synthesized recent evidence from observational studies and systematic/narrative reviews published in the last five years, with a focus on quantifying the incidence and timing of cardiac events, examining mechanisms of CRT-induced cardiotoxicity, and evaluating strategies for monitoring and mitigating cardiac risk. A comprehensive search was conducted in Pu

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) typically involves transseptal puncture (TSP) to access the left atrium. Traditional TSP requires sheath upsizing and exchanges, increasing procedural complexity, time, and risks. We evaluated the efficiency and safety of zero-exchange technique using the FlexCath Advance™ sheath combined with the VersaCross™ RF wire compared to the traditional method involving initial puncture with Agilis™ NxT sheath and Baylis RF needle, followed by sheath exchange.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 109 patients undergoing the

AIMS: Ventricular tachycardia (VT) in patients with structural heart disease can be life-threatening and may persist despite anti-arrhythmic therapy and catheter ablation. When standard treatments are ineffective or contraindicated, stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) has emerged as a non-invasive salvage option.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective, single-centre study included 19 patients with structural heart disease and recurrent VT unresponsive to conventional therapy and who were ineligible for ablation. Patients were selected by a multidisciplinary team and underwent cardiac

Background: The lead breakage (LB) during transvenous lead extraction (TLE) increases procedural complexity, increases the risk of complications, and decreases procedural efficiency. This study aimed to identify protective and risk factors for the breakage of cardiac electronic device leads during extraction. Methods: Data were sourced from the EXTRACT prospective registry for TLE procedures conducted between January 2016 and June 2025. A total of 702 consecutive TLE procedures involving 1375 leads were enrolled. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify independent protective and

Blunt cardiac tamponade is an uncommon but life-threatening consequence of thoracic trauma. Early recognition and prompt surgical management are essential to reduce mortality. In Case 1, a 35-year-old male presented nine hours after a fall from 10 ft with hypotension, bradycardia, and muffled heart sounds. Extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma (EFAST) revealed pericardial effusion suggestive of tamponade. The patient was transferred to the operating room and underwent a clamshell thoracotomy with pericardial decompression, evacuating 100 mL of hematoma. He stabilized and was su

The circumflex (Cx) coronary artery is more vulnerable to injury than other coronary arteries during procedures such as radiofrequency ablation, left atrial appendage closure, mitral valve repair, and coronary sinus-based mitral valve intervention. Furthermore, a lower success rate was also observed in the Cx artery during chronic occlusion recanalization. Additionally, injury to the great cardiac vein during Cx artery interventions can occur due to the highly variable and often unpredictable relationship between the great cardiac vein and the Cx artery, which occurs in approximately 30% of ca

BACKGROUND: Pericardial effusion (PCE) development in the context of infective endocarditis (IE) may negatively impact clinical outcomes leading to intense resource utilization. Limited contemporary studies exist that examine clinical outcomes, resource utilization and readmission rates in patients admitted for IE who develop PCE.
METHODS: We utilized the Nationwide Readmissions Database years 2016-2022 to tabulate all adult admissions for IE. We compared clinical outcomes in patients who developed PCE to those who did not. Survey weighted logistic and linear regression analysis was performed

BACKGROUND Radiofrequency ablation is an established and safe treatment for atrial arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. However, rare complications related to thermal myocardial injury, such as steam pop, can occur and occasionally result in life-threatening events. This report describes the case of a 70-year-old man who developed myocardial perforation and hemopericardium associated with a steam pop during cavo-tricuspid isthmus (CTI) ablation. CASE REPORT A 70-year-old man with a 6-month history of palpitations and exertional dyspnea underwent catheter ablation for
