INTRODUCTION: Chronic constrictive pericarditis (CCP) is a disease that has multiple possible causes and is associated with variable clinical findings, depending on its severity. It develops insidiously, and in many cases, particularly in developed countries, no antecedent diagnosis can be found. These cases are termed idiopathic. Tuberculosis is the leading cause of constrictive pericarditis in developing nations but represents only a small minority in developed countries.
METHODS: Here the authors describe two different case reports where tuberculosis was the probable cause of CCP.

BACKGROUND: Chronic constrictive pericarditis (CCP) is the end result of chronic inflammation of the pericardium. Developing countries continue to face a significant burden of CCP secondary to tuberculous pericarditis. Surgical pericardiectomy offers potential cure. However, there is paucity of echocardiography data in post-pericardiectomy patients vis-a-vis their clinical status. We studied the changes in multiple echocardiographic parameters in these patients before and after pericardiectomy.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients (14 men, 9 women) who underwent pericardiectomy for CCP in the last

BACKGROUND: To investigate the possibility and feasibility of simultaneous cardiac and noncardiac surgery.
METHODS: From August 2000 to March 2015, 64 patients suffering from cardiac and noncardiac diseases have been treated by simultaneous surgeries.
RESULTS: Two patients died after operations in hospital; thus, the hospital mortality rate was 3.1%. One patient with coronary heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, and a recurrence of bladder cancer accepted emergency simultaneous coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), bladder cystectomy, and ureterostomy. He died of acute cerebral infa

Classic constrictive pericarditis (CP) is characterized by fibrous scarring and adhesion of both the visceral pericardium and the parietal pericardium, which leads to restricted cardiac filling. However, diagnosing CP with normal thickness pericardium and without calcification is still a challenge. The predominant cause in the developed world is idiopathic or viral pericarditis followed by post-cardiac surgery and post-radiation. Tuberculosis still remains a common cause of CP in developing countries. In this report, we describe a rare case of idiopathic localized constrictive visceral pericar

BACKGROUND: Surgical experience with chronic constrictive pericarditis (CCP) is rarely documented in Africa; the aim of this study is therefore to review our African experience with CCP from 1977 to 2012 in terms of clinical and surgical outcomes and risk factors of early death after pericardiectomy.
METHODS: This retrospective study is related to 120 patients with CCP; there were 72 men and 48 women with an average age at 28.8±10.4 years standard deviation (SD) (8-51 years). The main etiology was tuberculosis (99%). Symptoms secondary to systemic venous congestion were always present: patien

We herein report the case of a 65-year-old man with pericardial involvement associated with autoimmune pancreatitis. Chest CT imaging showed pericardial thickening. The patient responded to corticosteroid therapy, and the pericardial thickening resolved. Multiple organs are involved in immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease (IgG4-RD); however, only a few cases of IgG4-related chronic constrictive pericarditis have been reported. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of IgG4-RD with pericardial involvement at an early stage. This case indicates that recognizing pericardial complic

Chronic constrictive pericarditis is a rare condition characterized by an impairment of myocardial relaxation due to limitation by a rigid pericardium. It is most often associated with infection, thoracic radiotherapy and heart surgery. Clinical features are that of chronic heart failure, therefore non-specific and resulting in a delay of several years before diagnosis is made. The echocardiogram and heart catheterization are part of the initial work-up. Surgical treatment consisting in pericardiectomy can be curative if the disease is recognised early. This article makes use of a case report

Constrictive pericarditis is an uncommon post-inflammatory disorder characterized by a variably thickened, fibrotic, and frequently calcified, pericardium. Etiology of the constriction can occur for many reasons. Although foreign bodies are not the common cause of constrictive pericarditis, the long-term presence of foreign bodies, like bullets, is presumed to cause chronic constrictive pericarditis even after a very long asymptomatic period. A 69-year-old patient with atrial flutter was admitted to the hospital. A cardiac computed tomography showed a bullet located adjacent to the right atriu

OBJECTIVES: Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is an uncommon disease with multiple causes and unclear clinical outcomes. To date, few publications have clearly defined risk factors of poor outcomes after surgery for CP. We performed a retrospective analysis of almost 100 patients undergoing surgical treatment for CP at a single institution in order to identify risk factors for perioperative and long-term mortality.
METHODS: A total of 97 consecutive patients (67.0% male) undergoing surgery for CP at our institution from 1995 to 2012 were included in the study. CP was diagnosed either preoperativ

Massive ascites of unknown origin is an uncommon condition, which represent a diagnostic challenge. Patients with delayed diagnosis and treatment may have a poor prognosis. A 22-year-old female was referred to this hospital due to a 4-year progressive abdominal distension with massive ascites of unknown origin. By thorough investigations, she was eventually diagnosed as chronic calcified constrictive pericarditis. She received pericardiectomy and had an uneventful postoperative course. With a few day paracentesis, ascites did not progress any more. She was doing well at 5-month follow-up and h

Chronic constrictive epicarditis is a special form of chronic pericarditis. It is characterized by a thickening of the visceral pericardium that becomes adherent to cardiovascular structures, thus impeding the diastolic filling of the ventricles. The parietal pericardium remains soft, without symphysis with the visceral pericardium. We illustrate the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this pathology by a clinical case.

BACKGROUND: Variations in longitudinal deformation of the left ventricle have been suggested to be useful for differentiating chronic constrictive pericarditis (CP) and restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM). We assessed left ventricular mechanics derived from cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) cine-based and 2-dimensional echocardiography-based tissue tracking to determine intermodality consistency of diagnostic information for differentiating CP from RCM.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively identified 92 patients who underwent both CMR and 2-dimensional echocardiography and who had a final diag

BACKGROUND: High-dose radiotherapy to the mediastinum for the treatment of malignancies causes injury to the intrathoracic organs. Coronary artery disease, valvular dysfunction, cardiomyopathy, and chronic constrictive pericarditis are common cardiovascular sequelae during long-term follow-up. Cardiac transplantation is indicated for the surgical treatment of heart failure due to radiation-induced end-stage cardiac disease.
METHODS: A retrospective study of radiation-induced cardiomyopathy requiring cardiac transplantation was undertaken from December 1992 to August 2010.
RESULTS: Twelve pat

Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is a rare clinical entity that can pose diagnostic problems. The diagnosis of CP requires a high degree of clinical suspicion. The gold standard for diagnosis is cardiac catheterization with analysis of intracavitary pressure curves, which are high and, in end diastole, equal in all chambers. We present a patient with unexplained dyspnea, recurrent right-side pleural effusion, and ascites. Analysis of the ascitic fluid revealed a high protein content and an elevated serum-ascites gradient. Echocardiography, computed tomography, and cardiac catheterization reveale

OBJECTIVE: Prognosis after pericardiectomy remains to be clearly elucidated, especially in Asian countries, where the causes of constrictive pericarditis differ from those in Western countries. We aimed to investigate the preoperative prognostic factors and clinical outcomes after pericardiectomy in patients with chronic constrictive pericarditis.
METHODS: Preoperative clinical and imaging characteristics were evaluated in 85 consecutive patients with chronic constrictive pericarditis without other valvular or ischemic heart diseases who underwent pericardiectomy. Causes were idiopathic in 49

The presence of right to left shunting due to elevated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in a patient with large ventricular septal defect (VSD) is conventionally considered as Eisenmenger's syndrome. The recognition of reversible causes of elevated PVR is important. We report hemodynamics of a child in whom unusual coexistence of large VSD and chronic constrictive pericarditis (CCP) mimicked Eisenmeneger's syndrome. The strategy of stepwise hemodynamic evaluation led to good clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: Left atrial (LA) function plays an important role in the maintenance of cardiac output, however, in patients with constrictive pericarditis (CP), whether pericardial restriction and adhesion can lead to LA dysfunction, and the characteristics of LA function remain unclear. The aim of the study is to compare the left atrial (LA) function of patients with CP to that of healthy study participants using speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) and conventional echocardiography.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty patients with CP and 30 healthy volunteers (controls) were enrolled in the study.

Chronic constrictive pericarditis (CP) is a relatively rare condition in which the pericardium becomes fibrotic and noncompliant, eventually resulting in heart failure due to impaired ventricular filling. The only curative treatment is pericardiectomy. Classically, CP does not usually cause severe pulmonary hypertension. When attempting to differentiate CP from restrictive cardiomyopathy, the presence of severely elevated pulmonary arterial pressure is used as a diagnostic criterion ruling against CP. We present a case of proven recurrent pericardial constriction following pericardiectomy pres
