The impact of staphylococci on food poisoning and infections could be higher than previously reported. In this study, we characterised the occurrence and coexistence of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes of staphylococci isolates in foods. Staphylococci were isolated from 236 samples of selected street-vended foods and identified. The pattern of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes in the staphylococci were assessed using disc diffusion, PCR and analysis of next-generation sequencing data. The food samples (70.76 %) showed a high prevalence of staphylococci and differed among

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a highly virulent pathogen that causes food-borne illness, food poisoning, skin and soft tissue infections, abscesses, mastitis, and bacteremia. It is common for meat and meat products to become contaminated with S. aureus due to dirty hands, food storage conditions, food production processes, and unhygienic conditions, causing food poisoning. Therefore, we aimed to isolate S. aureus strain from the raw beef and reveal virulence genes and antibiotic resistance profile from isolated S. aureus strains.
METHODS: In this study, 100 samples of raw b

Enterotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus are a common cause of food poisoning, leading to significant gastrointestinal symptoms and even hospitalization. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we searched three electronic databases for studies on detection of staphylococcal enterotoxins or enterotoxigenic S. aureus in raw ruminant milk. The 128 studies included in this systematic review showed a worldwide distribution of studies on staphylococcal enterotoxins and enterotoxigenic S. aureus, with an increase in the number from

Certain Staphylococcus aureus strains harbour staphylococcal enterotoxin genes and hence can produce enterotoxin during their growth in food. Therefore, food can be a source of staphylococcal food poisoning, one of the most common food-borne diseases worldwide. Epidemiological data show that S. aureus is often present in raw milk cheeses, and consequently, cheeses are often the source of staphylococcal food poisoning outbreaks. The aim of this study was to determine the phenotypic characteristics of S. aureus isolates from fresh cheese, including antibiotic susceptibility; the presence of clas

Staphylococcus aureus stands as one of the most pervasive pathogens given its morbidity and mortality worldwide due to its roles as an infectious agent that causes a wide variety of diseases ranging from moderately severe skin infections to fatal pneumonia and sepsis. S. aureus produces a variety of exotoxins that serve as important virulence factors in S. aureus-related infectious diseases and food poisoning in both humans and animals. For example, staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by S. aureus induce staphylococcal foodborne poisoning; toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1), as a typ

Staphylococcus aureus is a major bacterial cause of clinical infections and foodborne illnesses.Through the synthesis of a group of Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs), gastroenteritis occurs and the SEs function as superantigens to massively activate T cells. The ability to rapidly detect and quantify SEs is imperative in order to learn the causes of staphylococcal outbreaks and to stop similar outbreaks in the future. Also, the ability to discern active toxin is essential for development of food treatment and processing methods. Here, we discuss the various methodologies for detection and anal

Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is a typical biological toxin that causes food poisoning. Currently reported SEB detection methods have the drawbacks of sophisticated sample preparation and being time-consuming and labor-intensive. Herein, we propose a strategy based on an immune sandwich structure operating on a centrifugal microfluidic chip for point-of-care testing (POCT) of SEB. The fluorescent microparticle-labeled primary antibody (CM-EUs-Ab1), capture antibody (CAb), and goat anti-mouse IgG antibody (SAb) were modified on the bond area, T-area, and C-area, respectively. When SEB was

Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA), the toxin protein secreted by Staphylococcus aureus, can cause staphylococcal food poisoning outbreaks and seriously threaten global public health. However, little is known about the pathogenesis of SEA in staphylococcal foodborne diseases. In this study, the effect of SEA on intestinal barrier injury and NLRP3 inflammasome activation was investigated by exposing BALB/c mice to SEA with increasing doses and a potential toxic mechanism was elucidated. Our findings suggested that SEA exposure provoked villi injury and suppressed the expression of ZO-1 and occl

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for a wide range of infections in humans, such as skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, food poisoning or sepsis. Historically, S. aureus was able to rapidly adapt to anti-staphylococcal antibiotics and become resistant to several classes of antibiotics. Today, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is a multidrug-resistant pathogen and is one of the most common bacteria responsible for hospital-acquired infections and outbreaks, in community settings as well. The rapid and accurate diagnosis of antimicrobial resistance in S.

Superantigens (SAgs) are bacterial enterotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcal enterotoxin type A (SEA), a staphylococcal superantigen, has been shown to bind to the cytokine signalling receptor glycoprotein 130 (gp130). The structural details, as well as the exact physiological role of this interaction, remain unclear. Here, we describe the structural details of the SEA-gp130 complex by combining crosslinking mass spectrometry and computational modelling. Interestingly, SEA is not able to bind gp130-homologues from rat and mouse. Our data suggest that SEA may interact with

Pathogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus are mostly resistant to methicillin and they can cause severe infections. The current study was planned to assess the food poisoning potential of pathogenic, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus by molecular detection of enterotoxin A (Eta) gene. A total of 100 septic wound samples from patients admitted in surgical ward (n=50) and burn unit (n=50) of Mayo Hospital Lahore were collected aseptically. These samples were processed primarily for bacterial growth on nutrient agar and purified on mannitol salt agar where twenty (20) samples showed p

In the current study, we screened a collection of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolates for orthologues of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) involved in S. aureus-related staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). The amplicons corresponding to SEs were detected in S. chromogenes, S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, S. borealis, S. pasteuri, S. saprophyticus, S. vitulinus, S. warneri, and S. xylosus. All amplicons were sequenced and identified as parts of known S. aureus or S. epidermidis SE genes. Quantitative real-time PCR allowed determining the relative copy number of each SE amplicon. A

Staphylococcus aureus and staphylococcal enterotoxins are a serious public health concern associated with hospital and community-acquired illnesses. Dairy animals frequently shed S. aureus into the milk supply which can lead to food poisoning in humans. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of S. aureus and staphylococcal enterotoxins in raw milk from the main dairy region of mainland Portugal. S. aureus was found in 53.0% (95% CI: 40.6-65.4%) of 100 raw cow's milk samples collected from bulk cooling tanks. The highest contamination level was 3.4 log10 CFU.mL-1, a

Staphylococcal food poisoning outbreaks are caused by the ingestion of food contaminated with staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs). Among the 27 SEs described in the literature to date, only a few can be detected using immuno-enzymatic-based methods that are strongly dependent on the availability of antibodies. Liquid chromatography, coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), has, therefore, been put forward as a relevant complementary method, but only for the detection of a limited number of enterotoxins. In this work, LC-HRMS was developed for the detection and quantification of 24

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the most prevalent microorganism associated with mastitis in cattle, which harbours several virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes. The present study aimed to characterize S. aureus isolated from mastitic milk of the cattle for antibiotic resistance (blaZ and mecA), haemolysins (hla and hlb) and enterotoxins (sea, seb, sec, and sed) genes. A total of 69 staphylococci were isolated and phenotypically characterized for haemolytic properties on 5% sheep blood agar medium. Out of 69 isolates, 55 (79.71%) were identified as S. aureus by polymerase cha

The problem of antibiotic resistance considers one of the most dangerous challenges facing the medical field. So, it is necessary to find substitutions to conventional antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a bio-functional derivative that have been observed as one of the important solutions to such upcoming crisis. Owing to their role as the first line of defense against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This study was conducted to induce the immune response of Spodoptera littoralis larvae by inoculation of sub lethal doses of Staphylococcus aureus and its enterotoxin. Since Staphylococca

The crucial role of face masks is highlighted in our day-to-day life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Polypropylene (PP)-based disposable face masks are widely used to hold back viral transmission. The discarded masks can create a huge burden of contamination on the environment. The purpose of this work is to recycle and reuse discarded masks to reduce environmental pollution. A simple and innovative technique to recycle surgical masks into composites of higher mechanical strength and antimicrobial properties is explored to reuse in packaging materials and cutleries. The surgical masks composed o

Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is one of the most common serotypes in staphylococcal food-poisoning cases. A rapid, sensitive, and simple method for SEB detection is crucial for public health. A photonic crystal (PC) sensing material for label-free detection of ultra-trace SEB was proposed in this study. Gold nanoparticle-doped silica microspheres were stacked to form an opal PC through self-assembly, and SEB aptamers, as the recognition element, were modified onto the PC. When the target protein of SEB came in contact with the PC sensing material, the reflection peak intensity of PCs decr

Staphylococcus aureus is an important opportunistic pathogen of both humans and animals. It can cause several diseases, including mastitis, as well as food poisoning by production of heat-stable enterotoxins in food. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of S. aureus and the diversity of strains circulating in the Zambian dairy value chain, which have not been studied in detail before. Three provinces were covered by the study (Lusaka, Southern, and Western) and almost 2000 samples along the dairy value chain, covering both the informal and formal market sectors, were taken at

More than 30 types of artisanal cheeses are known in Brazil; however, microorganisms, such as Staphylococcus spp., can contaminate raw milk cheeses through different sources, from milking to processing. Staphylococcal food poisoning results from the consumption of food in which coagulase-positive staphylococci, mostly Staphylococcus aureus, have developed and produced enterotoxins. In addition, an emerging public health concern is the increasing antimicrobial resistance of some Staphylococcus strains. Furthermore, the ability of Staphylococcus spp. in sharing antibiotic resistance-related gene
