Q fever is a neglected zoonotic disease that poses a significant threat to the economy, animal health, and public health sectors worldwide, particularly in developing countries such as Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, where livestock production is the primary source of livelihood and food security for many communities, the implications of Q fever are particularly concerning. Despite its importance as a health issue for both animals and humans, there is insufficient national-level consolidated evidence regarding the burden of Q fever in ticks, domestic ruminants, and humans in Ethiopia. Therefore, this m

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, leads to debilitating human infections that are often recalcitrant to antibiotics. The development of new medical countermeasures is critical, as the only available vaccine has significant limitations that prevent its widespread or rapid use. To address this, we characterized aerosol C. burnetii infection in 16 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis), providing the first detailed pathological description of Q fever pneumonia in a nonhuman primate model. Following exposure, all animals developed clinical signs consistent with human Q fever, including sust

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, remains an important zoonotic disease with significant implications for animal health, livestock production, and public health. Epidemiological data regarding the circulation of C. burnetii in Romania remain limited, particularly in the western region of the country. This study aimed to assess the observed seropositivity and geographic distribution of anti-C. burnetii antibodies among sampled small ruminants from Western Romania. A cross-sectional sero-epidemiological survey was conducted using 546 serum samples collected from sheep (n = 451) and goats (n

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP) is a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), contributing significantly to hospitalization rates and mortality. In recent years, infections caused by uncommon pathogens such as Coxiella burnetii have increasingly been identified, posing significant challenges to managing PDAP.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 62-year-old male hospitalized for recurrent PDAP unresponsive to empirical antibiotics (meropenem, later meropenem/vancomycin). Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of peritoneal fluid identified C. burnetii

INTRODUCTION: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is increasingly recognised in Africa, though its burden remains underestimated due to limited surveillance and underreporting. Reliable prevalence and epidemiological data are crucial for understanding the disease's distribution, identifying high-risk populations and developing effective control strategies, necessitating this systematic review.
METHODS: The review protocol is registered in prospectively registered systematic reviews (PROSPERO) (ID: CRD42025625366). Research questions and inclusion/exclusion criteria were developed using the

BACKGROUND: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a globally distributed zoonosis that remains largely underdiagnosed in Algeria. Since its first description in 1935, fragmented data have accumulated across human, animal, and vector hosts without comprehensive synthesis. This systematic review summarizes all available information on the occurrence of C. burnetii in Algeria from 1935 to 2025, across human, animal and ectoparasite compartments, and critically discusses potential reservoirs, vectors and knowledge gaps.
METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Sci

Q fever is a zoonotic disease associated with reproductive losses in ruminants. This study investigated a 2025 outbreak on a Boer goat breeding farm in South Korea and compared its molecular characteristics with those of a separate 2024 outbreak. Conventional PCR targeting the IS1111 insertion element was used to test 87 goats, three female farm dogs, and four barn-level composite environmental samples. Positive goat samples underwent multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis and multispacer sequence typing. Coxiella burnetii was detected in 60 of 87 goats (69.0%) and in one enviro

OBJECTIVES: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is an underrecognized zoonotic infection with diverse clinical manifestations. The nonspecific nature and slow progression of Q fever frequently delay diagnosis, sometimes leading to severe or even fatal outcomes. This study describes 32 patients diagnosed with Q fever over an 18-month period in a previously unreported region, highlighting the emerging awareness of this neglected zoonosis.
METHODS: Patients with seropositive C. burnetii Phase I/II IgM and/or IgG antibodies between October 2023 and March 2025 (18-month period) were included. Ca

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonotic disease usually treated with doxycycline, but alternative options are needed when doxycycline is unsuitable. This study evaluated inhaled liposomal ciprofloxacin (Apulmiq®) as a post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) compared with oral doxycycline in a common marmoset model.
METHODS: Marmosets were exposed to aerosolised C. burnetii and treated 24 h later with Apulmiq (0.8 mg/kg inhaled), doxycycline (6 mg/kg oral), or placebo for 7 days. Outcomes included fever, weight loss, bacterial burden, histopathology, liver enzymes, a

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever, a zoonotic disease of public health concern. Despite the recent expansion of the domestic goat industry in Korea, epidemiological data regarding C. burnetii exposure in Korean goat populations remain limited. This pilot study aimed to assess the serological distribution of C. burnetii exposure in the southwestern region of Jeonnam Province, the major goat-breeding region of Korea. Goat serum samples were originally collected for routine Foot-and-Mouth Disease monitoring in 2025. Using a two-stage random sampling approach, 92 samples were sel

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes the zoonotic disease Q fever. Coxiella extensively subverts host vesicle traffic and replicates within lysosome-derived, spacious vacuoles by secreting a suite of effectors through the type IVB secretion system (T4BSS). This study investigates the regulation and role of a fundamental lysosomal process, exocytosis, in the prolonged maintenance of Coxiella vacuolar niche. Biochemical, microscopic, and proteomic approaches indicate that infection promotes release of extracellular vesicles (EVs). Increase in extracellula

Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative, ubiquitous bacterium that may infect many animal species as well as humans. In this study, transmission of C. burnetii during an outbreak of abortions in a herd of Finnish forest reindeer (Rangifer tarandus fennicus) in a Dutch zoo was investigated. Diagnostic sampling showed positive C. burnetii antigen detection with qPCR from vaginal swabs and positive C. burnetii serology (ELISA) in all cases of abortion (4/4) and in one animal after normal parturition. Placental tissue (n = 2) and fetal liver tissue (n = 1) retrieved after two abortions were positive

Bulk tank milk (BTM) provides a practical, non-invasive matrix for repeated herd-level surveillance in dairy farms. This study evaluated a four-season BTM framework for bovine brucellosis, influenza A virus, and Q fever in Korean dairy farms. In 2025, 602 BTM samples were collected from 167 farms in spring and summer and 134 farms in autumn and winter. Seasonal comparisons were interpreted cautiously because farm composition changed after summer. Bovine brucellosis was tested by milk ring test, influenza A virus by M-gene real-time RT-PCR, and Q fever antibodies by ELISA. An exploratory avian
