Seroprevalence, Risk Factors, and Environmental Correlates of Babesia caballi, Toxoplasma gondii, and Coxiella burnetii in Equids from Southwestern Greece.

Equids, primarily horses, are mostly used for recreational purposes, although in some rural areas they also serve as working animals, maintaining close and frequent contact with humans. Their risk of exposure to vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens can be affected by host-related factors, management practices and environmental conditions. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence and associated risk factors for infections by Babesia caballi, Toxoplasma gondii, Coxiella burnetii, and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in equids from Southwestern Greece. A total of 159 equids were tested us

National surveillance of tick- and mite-borne diseases in Japan, 1999-2025: a rapid surveillance reporting framework using the jpinfect R package.

The Government of Japan has conducted weekly national surveillance of notifiable infectious diseases for over 25 years. As of December 2025, 87 notifiable diseases are under surveillance, although the list has changed over time as new infections have emerged and others have been reclassified. Although weekly data are openly available, their formatting and preparation have been labour-intensive. An open-source R package, jpinfect, has the potential to improve data accessibility and analytical workflows for these data sets. In this study, we used the jpinfect package to summarize national survei

Seroprevalence and Presumed Bovine Leukaemia Virus and Coxiella burnetii Coinfections in Three Dairy Cattle Herds From the Al Ain Region, United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) and Coxiella burnetii are important infectious pathogens of dairy cattle with potential implications for animal health, productivity and zoonotic transmission (in the case of C. burnetii). Because BLV may alter immune function, we hypothesize that infection with the virus could increase cattle susceptibility to C. burnetii. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of BLV and C. burnetii in dairy cattle herds in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (EAD) and to assess any association between the positive serostatus of the two path

A Case of Q fever: What Does the South Dakota Clinician Need to Know?

Q fever is a reportable, zoonotic infection caused by Coxiella burnetii. It can present as either an acute or chronic infection. Acute Q fever is frequently asymptomatic or presents with nonspecific symptoms, making the diagnosis challenging. In the chronic state it will manifest as localized infection such as endocarditis, which is the most common. South Dakota has the highest incidence of Q fever in the U.S. with 12.4 cases per million people. We present a case of a patient in their 50s with mild hepatitis and persistent fevers and eventually was diagnosed with Q fever. The patient had no kn

High prevalence of Q fever among patients clinically diagnosed with brucellosis in a Kenyan pastoralist community.

Coxiella burnetii is a zoonotic bacterial agent responsible for Q fever in both humans and animals. Ruminants are the most common livestock species associated with Q fever infections in humans. The disease presentation in humans range from asymptomatic, non-specific symptoms to fatal illness. In Kenya, no healthcare indicators seek to clinically diagnose and report Q fever because there are no readily available diagnostic technologies. We conducted a prospective observational study with paired serological sampling leveraging on the existing equipment in the Kajiado County referral laboratory t

Biopsy-confirmed acute Q fever hepatitis complicating severe alcohol-associated hepatitis: a diagnostic and management challenge.

We describe the case of a woman in her 40s with heavy alcohol use who presented with jaundice, persistent fever and severe liver dysfunction initially managed as alcohol-associated hepatitis. Despite broad-spectrum antibiotics and negative septic screening, she remained febrile. Further investigation, prompted by rural livestock exposure and recent family exposure to Q fever, revealed acute Coxiella burnetii infection, supported by phase II-predominant Q fever serology, including phase II IgG IFA titre 1:2048, and positive serum/blood PCR. Liver biopsy demonstrated moderate-to-severe alcohol-a

What goes around comes around: updates in the study of Coxiella burnetii lipopolysaccharide phase variation.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a major outer membrane component of Gram-negative bacteria that can modulate host immune responses during infection. Extensive studies on the LPS of well-studied organisms, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., have elucidated many LPS pathways; however, knowledge of unique LPS structures of lesser-studied bacteria, such as Coxiella burnetii, remains limited. C. burnetii is an intracellular pathogen that is the cause of the zoonotic disease Q fever. The highly infectious nature of C. burnetii warrants designation as a select agent by the United States Federa

Development and preliminary evaluation of real-time fluorescence-based RPA and RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a assays for rapid detection of Coxiella burnetii.

Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii) is a ubiquitous zoonotic pathogen that exists widely in nature and is an obligate intracellular parasite of eukaryotic cells, causing Q fever in both humans and animals. Therefore, the surveillance and prevention of Q fever are of great importance for public health and the livestock industry. In this study, specific RPA primers, probes, and crRNAs were designed and synthesized targeting the IS1111 gene of C. burnetii, a real-time fluorescence recombinase polymerase amplification (qRPA) assay and a RPA combined with CRISPR/Cas12a (RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a) assay for the

TFEB and MCOLN1 are important for Coxiella burnetii egress via lysosomal exocytosis.

Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular pathogen and the causative agent of the zoonotic disease Q fever. Resident alveolar macrophages are the first target cells, but C. burnetii spreads to other cell types. While we have information about C. burnetii uptake and the establishment of the replication-competent phagolysosomal-like C. burnetii-containing vacuole (CCV), it is not well studied how C. burnetii exits its host cell. Here, we show that an infection with C. burnetii also triggers the activation of TFEB, a master regulator of autophagy and lysosomal development. The

[Acute Q Fever in Patients with Risk Factors for a Focalized Persistent Infection - Can Prolonged Antimicrobial Therapy Prevent this Complication?].

Q fever is a zoonotic disease, which is endemic in Israel. Most patients have an acute infection, but some cases manifest as a persistent focalized infection. Risk factors for a persistent focalized infection include significant valvular diseases, and aortic aneurism or vascular grafts, immunosuppression or malignancy, pregnancy, elevated anticardiolipin IgG. Recommendations for these high-risk patients after acute Q fever vary from clinical and serological follow-up to combined prolonged antimicrobial therapy, mostly with doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine. Molecular survey of tick-borne pathogens in Otobius megnini from Central Mexico with special emphasis on Bartonella detection.

Soft ticks (Argasidae) remain among the least studied hematophagous ectoparasites. One of these species, Otobius megnini, the spiny ear tick, is a widely distributed, likely Nearctic-origin species whose global spread has been facilitated by the movement of cattle and horses-its primary hosts. Despite its generalist habits and ability to parasitize a wide range of mammals, including livestock and companion animals from the orders Artiodactyla and Carnivora, its role as a potential vector of pathogens remains poorly understood. Previous studies have linked O. megnini to otitis and tissue damage

Selective use of reinforced tissue matrix in complex abdominal wall reconstruction: a multicenter consensus analysis.

BACKGROUND: Optimal mesh selection in complex abdominal wall reconstruction remains controversial, particularly in contaminated fields or in patients with extensive tissue loss. Reinforced tissue matrix (RTM) meshes combine biologic material with permanent synthetic reinforcement and may represent a potential option in selected cases. This study aimed to analyze clinical use patterns of RTM meshes and identify potential indication niches through structured expert consensus. METHODS: A multicenter expert panel collected cases of abdominal wall reconstruction using RTM mesh (OviTex). Patient ch

Two Cases of Q Fever in Pregnancy, including Management of the Newborn, Australia.

Optimal management of the birthing parent with Q fever in pregnancy and of the infant has not been established. Coxiella burnetii expresses a tropism for the placenta; resulting infection can potentially lead to spontaneous abortion and fetal demise. Although evidence around preventing transmission and infection in the peripartum and postpartum period is lacking, reports of healthy babies born to mothers with acute or chronic Q fever in pregnancy are increasing. Historically, many clinicians have recommended against breastfeeding in this setting because of a theoretical risk for bacterial tran

Epidemiological investigation of Coxiella burnetii in farms after an outbreak of Q fever in slaughterhouse workers.

Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. In January/2015, a Q fever outbreak occurred among workers at a cattle slaughterhouse in southeastern Brazil. This study investigated if C. burnetii was circulating on farms that sent cattle to the slaughterhouse at the time of the 2015-Q fever outbreak. Blood, milk, vaginal swab and tick samples were collected from livestock on 35 farms surrounding the slaughterhouse. Serological analyses with C. burnetii whole antigens indicated that 68.6 % farms (24/35) had at least one seropositive animal, 76.7 % (23/30) farms had s

B-cell peptide epitopes as diagnostic targets for Q fever in sheep.

INTRODUCTION: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonotic disease of global relevance with domestic ruminants as the main reservoirs. Serological diagnosis, especially enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), often suffers from limited sensitivity and specificity due to antigenic variability and cross-reactivity. SCIENTIFIC GOAL: In this study, a combined proteomic and literature research approach was used to identify immunoreactive proteins and predict linear B-cell epitopes as alternative diagnostic targets. METHODS: Total protein extracts of a C. burnetii field isolate from shee

[Coxiella burnetii in small ruminants - managing the zoonotic pathogen].

Q fever, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, is a globally distributed zoonosis for which ruminants are considered to be the main reservoir. In Germany, the majority of human Q fever cases are linked to small ruminants. Epidemiological investigations show clear regional differences in herd prevalence, with higher detection rates in southern Germany, particularly associated with out-of-season lambing. Diagnosis in animals relies on both indirect (primarily ELISA) and direct pathogen detection (primarily PCR), although neither method can confirm the pathogen-free st

Human Q fever outbreak investigation and management in six European countries: a One Health compendium of practices and recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, with domestic ruminants serving as the main reservoir. Infected animals can shed large quantities of the pathogen into the environment after normal parturition or abortion, enabling airborne transmission to humans and potentially triggering outbreaks of variable scale. Effective outbreak management requires the rapid identification of all related cases, tracing of infection source(s), and implementing proportionate control measures that protect human health while considering animal health and ecosystem integrity.
