Global, regional and national burdens of alcoholic cardiomyopathy among the working-age population, 1990-2021: a systematic analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) results from chronic alcohol misuse and primarily affects the working-age population (15-64 years). The global age-standardized rates (ASRs) of ACM disease burden declined slightly from 1990 to 2021, but the absolute cases increased, especially in high‒medium sociodemographic index (SDI) regions such as Eastern Europe. The aim of this study was to inform strategies to combat this preventable yet escalating health issue. METHODS: We calculated estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) to quantify the dynamics of prevalence, deaths, and disability-ad

Exploration of the effects of 66 mitochondria-associated proteins on different cardiomyopathies: A bidirectional 2-sample mendelian randomization study.

The aim of this study was to apply bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess and investigate the causal associations between mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN), mitochondrial-associated proteins and cardiomyopathy. The mtDNA-CN and MAP from the IEU Open GWAS database were screened for strong associations with 4 different cardiomyopathy-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IEU Open GWAS and Finnish databases, respectively, and causal associations were investigated using the inverse variance weighting method, the MR-Egger regression method, the weighted media

Imaging Manifestations of Alcohol Use-associated Disorders and Diseases.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a serious condition linked to multiple health issues such as nervous system damage, heart disease, alcoholic liver disease, development of cancers, fetal alcohol syndrome, mental health disorders, and injuries to self and others. AUD presents a growing problem worldwide with significant economic and health care costs. Despite its growing prevalence, AUD remains underdiagnosed, partly due to the underreporting of alcohol intake and the stigma associated with the diagnosis. While traditionally diagnosed through clinical evaluation and patient history, diagnosis of A

Global burden of alcoholic cardiomyopathy in middle-aged men (1990-2021) and projections to 2050: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease 2021 data.

OBJECTIVE: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a severe cardiovascular condition caused by chronic excessive alcohol consumption, leading to heart failure, increased morbidity, and mortality. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the global burden of ACM among middle-aged males from 1990 to 2021 using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data. Additionally, we projected future trends until 2050 using time-series forecasting models. METHODS: We extracted ACM-related mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and years of life lost (YLLs) from the G

Astaxanthin Prevented Acute Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy by Maintenance of Mitophagy-Mediated Mitochondrial Homeostasis.

Acute alcoholism commonly targets the myocardium, triggering acute alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM). Strong evidence suggested that mitochondrial dysfunction-induced myocardial oxidative stress is involved in the subcellular pathogenesis of acute ACM. We investigated whether astaxanthin (AST), an antioxidant lutein carotenoid, prevents acute ACM and explored the underlying mechanisms. C57BL/6J mice were used to model ethanol-induced ACM and were treated with AST (100 mg/kg/day) alongside the autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine (10 mg/kg/day). Cardiac function, heart pathology, cardiac hypertrop

Early-Stage Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy Highlighted by Metabolic Remodeling, Oxidative Stress, and Cardiac Myosin Dysfunction in Male Rats.

Chronic ethanol use can lead to alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM), while the impact on the molecular and cellular aspects of the myocardium is unclear. Accordingly, male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to an ethanol-containing diet for 16 weeks and compared with a control group that was fed an isocaloric diet. Histological measurements from H&E slides revealed no significant differences in cell size. A proteomic approach revealed that alcohol exposure leads to enhanced mitochondrial lipid metabolism, and electron microscopy revealed impairments in mitochondrial morphology/density. Cardiac myosin

Spontaneous resolution of right ventricular thrombus in congestive heart failure due to alcoholic cardiomyopathy: A case report.

UNLABELLED: Right ventricular thrombus (RVT) is rare, and differentiating it from other right ventricular masses is challenging. Additionally, clear guidelines for managing right heart thrombi, particularly type C thrombi, are lacking. A 44-year-old man with congestive heart failure secondary to alcoholic cardiomyopathy was admitted. Echocardiography revealed a highly mobile, elongated mass in the right ventricle, attached to the tendinous cords of the tricuspid valve. Initial treatment for heart failure was administered without anticoagulants. On the 13th day of admission, follow-up echocardi

Alcohol and Cardiovascular Disease.

Alcohol's impact on cardiovascular health is biphasic: low-to-moderate intake may appear protective, but excessive or binge drinking causes significant harm. This review examines mechanisms linking overconsumption to cardiovascular disease. Acute heavy drinking can trigger "holiday heart syndrome," a transient atrial arrhythmia from electrophysiological instability, autonomic imbalance, and electrolyte shifts. Chronic excess contributes to alcoholic cardiomyopathy via oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired calcium handling. Alcohol also promotes atrial fibrillation and hyper

Epidemiological trends in alcoholic cardiomyopathy burden: A 32-year global and Chinese analysis (1990-2021) with projections to 2036.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM), a preventable yet overlooked cardiomyopathy subtype, disproportionately affects chronic alcohol users through alcohol-induced myocardial damage. Characterized by delayed clinical onset, ACM typically manifests as irreversible heart failure in middle age (45-69 years), creating missed opportunities for early intervention. Despite global cardiovascular mortality declines, ACM burden continues rising paradoxically in certain middle-high income countries like China, revealing gaps in current prevention strategies. This study systematically evaluates ACM'

Hepatocyte growth factor alleviates alcoholic cardiomyopathy through the Nrf2 pathway-a focus on iron metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse leads to cardiomyopathy. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) concentrations and iron metabolism fluctuations are both associated with cardiovascular diseases. This investigation is designed to test if and how HGF regulates cardiac ferroptosis. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were used to establish animal models. Exogenous HGF's potential to reduce cardiomyocyte ferroptosis, which is typified by varying labile iron pool (LIP), elevated lipid peroxidation, and diminished cell survival, was examined by fluorescence quantification, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
