As in other cardiomyopathies, extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling plays an important role in anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy. To understand the pattern and timing of ECM remodeling pathways, we conducted a systematic review in which we describe protein and mRNA markers for ECM remodeling that are differentially expressed in the hearts of animals with anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy. We included 68 studies in mice, rats, rabbits, and pigs with follow-up of 0.1-8.2 human equivalent years after anthracycline administration. Using meta-analysis, we found 29 proteins and 11 mRNAs that w

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is vectored by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes and is found throughout tropical and sub-tropical regions. While most infections cause mild symptoms such as fever and arthralgia, there have been cases in which cardiac involvement has been reported. In adults, case reports include symptoms ranging from tachycardia and arrythmia, to myocarditis and cardiac arrest. In children, case reports describe symptoms such as arrythmia, myocarditis, and heart failure. Case reports of perinatal and neonatal CHIKV infections have also described cardiovascular compromise

BACKGROUND: Danon disease is an X-linked dominant disorder with defects in the lysosome-associated membrane protein 2 (LAMP2) gene and is characterized histologically by intracellular autophagic vacuoles in skeletal and cardiac muscles. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) T1 mapping potentially allows to differentiate intracellular and extracellular cardiac abnormalities with a combination of native T1 value and extracellular volume (ECV) fraction.
CASE SUMMARY: We assessed CMR T1 mapping in two Danon disease patients (a 22-year-old man and his 48-year-old mother), who had a LAMP2 c.864G>A p. Va

There is a growing evidence of cardiovascular complications in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. As evidence accumulated of COVID-19 mediated inflammatory effects on the myocardium, substantial attention has been directed towards cardiovascular imaging modalities that facilitate this diagnosis. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) is the gold standard for the detection of structural and functional myocardial alterations and its role in identifying patients with COVID-19 mediated cardiac injury is growing. Despite its utility in the diagnosis of myocardial injury in this popula

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Although feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) occurs more commonly, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM), arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) and cardiomyopathy - nonspecific phenotype (NCM; formerly unclassified cardiomyopathy) are all recognized in domestic cats.
PATIENT GROUP: Any adult domestic cat, of either sex and of any breed, can be affected.
DIAGNOSTICS: The non-HCM cardiomyopathies are rarely suspected in subclinically affected cats, so most are first identified when a cat

BACKGROUND: A pathogenic variant in the gene encoding phospholamban (PLN), a protein that regulates calcium homeostasis of cardiomyocytes, causes PLN cardiomyopathy. It is characterized by a high arrhythmic burden and can progress to severe cardiomyopathy. Risk assessment guides implantable cardioverter-defibrillator therapy and benefits from personalization. Whether sex-specific differences in PLN cardiomyopathy exist is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to improve the accuracy of PLN cardiomyopathy diagnosis and risk assessment by investigating sex-specific aspects.

Chagas cardiomyopathy is a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Structural and functional abnormalities are the result of direct myocardial damage by the parasite, immunological reactions, dysautonomia, and microvascular alterations. Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC) is the most serious and important manifestation of the disease, affecting up to 30% of patients in the chronic phase. It results in heart failure, arrhythmias, thromboembolism, and sudden cardiac death. As in other cardiomyopathies, scar-related reentry frequently results in ventricular tachycardia (VT). The scars ty

Left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) and restrictive cardiomyopathies (RCM) are rare diseases with high morbidity and mortality in the pediatric age group, particularly the restrictive. They can be diagnosed at any age even in fetal life, in isolation or association with other cardiomyopathies or congenital heart disease. The causes may be genetic, neuromuscular, metabolic, storage, or idiopathic disorders. The main morphological characteristic of LVNC is the presence of a non-compact myocar dium with numerous prominent trabeculations and deep recesses, which may results in myocardial dysfun

Endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) affects approximately 12 million persons worldwide and is an important cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy in the developing world, with the highest prevalence reported in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and South America. EMF is characterized by apical filling with fibrotic tissue of one or both ventricles, often associated with thrombus, calcification, and atrioventricular valve regurgitation, leading to typical symptoms of restrictive heart failure. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the first-line modality for assessment of EMF, basically owing to its wid

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy is a common complication among muscular dystrophy (MD) patients and often results in advanced heart failure and premature death. In spite of this, there is hesitancy to consider heart transplantation (HTx). This study describes the HTx outcomes in patients with MD in the United States.
METHODS AND RESULTS: All HTx in the United Network for Organ Sharing database from October 1, 1987, to March 31, 2016, were identified. Two patient groups were created: MD cohort (n=81), and a cohort of all other cardiomyopathies, called cardiomyopathy-unmatched (n=41 317). Propensity

Cardiomyopathies are responsible for heart failure and sudden cardiac death, but epidemiological data are scarce and the public health burden may be underestimated. We studied aggregating data from all public or private hospitals in France. Patients were categorized from relevant ICD-10 codes into dilated, hypertrophic, restrictive, or other cardiomyopathies (DCM, HCM, RCM, or OCM, respectively). Between 2008 and 2015, a total of 326,461 distinct patients had cardiomyopathy-related hospitalizations. The hospital-based prevalence of cardiomyopathy was 809 per million inhabitants (PMI) per year,

Background: The pleomorphic clinical presentation makes the diagnosis of desminopathy difficult. We aimed to describe the prevalence, phenotypic expression, and mitochondrial function of individuals with putative disease-causing desmin (DES) variants identified in patients with an unexplained etiology of cardiomyopathy. Methods: A total of 327 Czech patients underwent whole exome sequencing and detailed phenotyping in probands harboring DES variants. Results: Rare, conserved, and possibly pathogenic DES variants were identified in six (1.8%) probands. Two DES variants previously classified as

OBJECTIVE: Up to 50% of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) show no disease-causing variants in genetic studies. TRIM63 has been suggested as a candidate gene for the development of cardiomyopathies, although evidence for a causative role in HCM is limited. We sought to investigate the relationship between rare variants in TRIM63 and the development of HCM.
METHODS: TRIM63 was sequenced by next generation sequencing in 4867 index cases with a clinical diagnosis of HCM and in 3628 probands with other cardiomyopathies. Additionally, 3136 index cases with familial cardiovascular dise

Description Left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy is an uncommon type of cardiomyopathy caused by malformation of the myocardium during embryogenesis. This results in trabeculations within the ventricular wall that can affect the left and, less commonly, right ventricles. Presentation ranges from clinically asymptomatic to life-threatening arrhythmias. It is a rare and relatively unknown form of cardiomyopathy, though thought to be underdiagnosed. Prevalence is increasing due to improvements in imaging and awareness. Management is similar to that of other cardiomyopathies including an

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked genetic disorder leading to progressive skeletal and cardiac myopathy. Elevated myocardial T1 values correlate with fibrosis in most disease processes, but DMD skeletal and cardiac histopathology is defined by fibrofatty replacement that may result in a decrease in T1 values, due to the low T1 of fat. The study goal was to assess myocardial T1 values in DMD patients with and without late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). A retrospective analysis was performed on all patients with DMD referred for CMR at our institution from 7/5/2017 to 10/24/2018. T

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Up to 50% of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) show no disease-causing variants in genetic studies. Mutations in CSRP3 have been associated with HCM, but evidence supporting pathogenicity is inconclusive. In this study, we describe an HCM cohort with a missense variant in CSRP3 (p.Cys150Tyr) with supporting evidence for pathogenicity and a description of the associated phenotype.
METHODS: CSRP3 was sequenced in 6456 index cases with a diagnosis of HCM and in 5012 probands with other cardiomyopathies. In addition, 3372 index cases with hereditary card

BACKGROUND: Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an infiltrative disease characterised by accumulation of amyloid deposits in the extracellular space of the myocardium-comprising transthyretin (ATTR) and light chain (AL) amyloidosis as the most frequent subtypes. Histopathological proof of amyloid deposits by endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) is the gold standard for diagnosis of CA. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) allows non-invasive workup of suspected CA. We conducted a multi-centre study to assess the diagnostic value of CMR in comparison to EMB for the diagnosis of CA.
METHODS: We studied N = 1

Prognostic stratification of cardiomyopathies represents a cornerstone for the appropriate management of patients and is focused mainly on arrhythmic events and heart failure. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing provides additional prognostic information, particularly in the setting of heart failure. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing data, integrated in scores such as the Metabolism Exercise Cardiac Kidney Index score have been shown to improve the risk stratification of these patients. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing has been analysed as a potential supplier of prognostic parameters in the conte

BACKGROUND: Familial dilated cardiomyopathy (FDCM) account for 20%-30% of non-ischemic cardiomyopathies (NICM). Previous published data showed that some patients with FDCM tend to have rapidly progressive disease; however, five-year mortality was not significantly different in the familial and non-familial forms of NICM with optimal medical therapy.
AIM: To better define the characteristics and clinical outcomes of FDCM patients listed for heart transplantation (HT).
METHODS: We queried the United Network for Organ Sharing Registry to identify FDCM patients listed for HT between January 2008
