Estimating scrub typhus and murine typhus incidence among adolescents and adults in Yangon, Myanmar.

OBJECTIVES: Rickettsioses are frequent causes of treatable febrile illness in Southeast Asia, including Myanmar. Accurate estimates of the incidence of rickettsioses are needed to inform investments in disease prevention and control. We sought to estimate the incidence of rickettsioses among adults and adolescents by combining sentinel hospital surveillance with a healthcare utilisation survey in Yangon, Myanmar. METHODS: We conducted a household-based healthcare utilisation survey in the Yangon Region from 12 March through 5 April 2018. Multipliers derived from this survey were then applied

TlyC, a conserved hemolysin in Rickettsia, contributes to spotted fever pathogenesis in mice.

UNLABELLED: Rickettsia circulates between mammalian hosts and hematophagous arthropod vectors by exploiting their intracellular environment. With advances in rickettsial genetic tools, recent studies have identified novel molecular mechanisms involved in Rickettsia-host-vector interactions. However, a significant knowledge gap exists in understanding how Rickettsia modulates its virulence functions to survive in two drastically different environments (mammalian hosts vs arthropod vectors). Bacterial hemolysins play a crucial role in neutralizing innate immune functions through pore-forming act

Napoleon Bonaparte-A Possible Case of Trench Fever.

In 1789, Napoleon Bonaparte reported having a recurrent febrile illness that initially subsided for 4 days and then had multiple relapses of similar duration. A speculative diagnosis of trench fever would be supported by poor hygiene conditions, prolonged exposure to cold, and the presence of lice in Napoleon's barracks environment.

Tick-Borne Infectious Diseases in China, 2003-2023.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) pose a substantial threat to global public health, including China. This article systematically reviews the epidemiology of TBDs in Chinese mainland between 2003 and 2023. We retrieved and analyzed the incidence and distribution of notable bacterial, viral, and parasitic TBDs in China, and discussed their clinical characteristics, diagnostic approaches, and vectors. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome is the leading TBD in China, with cases rapidly increasing since its first report in 2009, and a high case fatality rate of 5%-33% in patients with severe disea

Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana antigens grown in liquid medium are inferior to cell culture-grown antigen for immunofluorescence IgG testing of patient sera.

Serodiagnosis of Bartonella infections predominantly relies on immunofluorescence assays (IFA) utilizing antigen preparations derived from bacteria co-cultivated with host cells. We compared the diagnostic performances of whole-cell Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana antigens generated in liquid culture with those from cell culture. IFA using liquid culture-derived B. henselae antigens yielded lower IgG antibody titers, and no consistent correlation in IgG titers was observed for B. quintana. We conclude that liquid-cultured Bartonella antigens are inferior to those used in commercial

Rickettsia rickettsii subsp californica subsp nov, the Etiologic Agent of Pacific Coast Tick Fever.

The etiologic agent of Pacific Coast tick fever, a moderately severe tickborne illness that resembles Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), was first isolated in 1966 from specimens of Dermacentor occidentalis (the Pacific Coast tick) obtained in California. For several decades, this bacterium was identified ambiguously as the unclassified spotted fever group Rickettsia species 364-D, Rickettsia 364, or Rickettsia philipii. However, none of these epithets satisfied criteria of formal bacterial nomenclature. Data developed from mouse serotyping studies performed >45 years ago, and multilocus seq

Focus on brown dog tick-transmitted Rocky Mountain spotted fever in dogs and people: shared threats and solutions.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) kills people and dogs in rural communities throughout the Americas and in urban epidemics in Brazil and Mexico. The companion Currents in One Health by Foley et al, AJVR , March 2025, addresses the urban ecology of this devastating disease across the Americas. Cases acquired from Dermacentor spp ticks are sylvatic and sporadic, in contrast with peridomestic cases from Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato, which relies on dogs as hosts. Since the early 2000s, RMSF reemerged in northern Mexico with at least 9,152 human cases and case mortality up to 50%. These

Canine Spotted Fever Group Rickettsial Seroprevalence as an Indicator for Human Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Case Rates in Arizona, USA.

INTRODUCTION: Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a rapidly progressing febrile disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, is the deadliest tick-borne disease in the world. Human infection initially results in non-specific symptoms and, if untreated, can result in death in up to 35% of cases. Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick) was discovered to spread RMSF in Arizona and Northern Mexico in the early 2000s, and the disease is now considered endemic in areas of the Southwestern United States. This study investigates the relationship between canine spotted fever group ricketts

Spotted Fever Rickettsioses in Panama: New Cases and the Gaps That Hinder Its Epidemiological Understanding.

Rickettsia rickettsii is the most virulent agent of the genus Rickettsia that causes one of the most relevant vector-borne diseases in the Americas (RRSF). RRSF manifests with many non-specific acute clinical symptoms complicating its diagnosis and can lead to death if not treated appropriately. RRSF has been reported in Canada, the United States of America, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina. In addition to R. rickettsii, mild and severe spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGR) have been reported in the Americas; however, the true prevalence of these diseases is unkno

Challenges in Diagnosing Rickettsial Infection: A Case Report of Rickettsia conorii in a Pediatric Patient in Iran.

Mediterranean spotted fever has recently been reported in Iran, yet it continues to be overlooked by healthcare professionals in the country. This case report details a 19-month-old child who presented with fever, edema and skin rashes and was initially misdiagnosed. Subsequent testing revealed a Mediterranean spotted fever infection through IgG seroconversion. Treatment with doxycycline led to the child's full recovery. Rickettsial infections pose a significant public health challenge, particularly in endemic areas, making early intervention essential to avoid severe complications.

The Use of Rabbits Used to Propagate Human Lice for Research.

The globally important human diseases of trench fever, epidemic typhus, and relapsing fever are vectored by the human louse Pediculus humanus humanus. Although these conditions are epidemically quiescent at present, they persist in socially dysfunctional situations of war, deprivation, and crowding. The taxonomically closely related head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, does not respect economic or social status and is quite common in most countries. The 2 types of lice are now recognized as conspecific ecotypes of a single species. While the body louse has been adapted for propagation in the

An impedimetric immunosensor for diagnosis of Brazilian spotted fever in blood plasma.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is a serious disease of medical importance due to its rapid evolution and high lethality. The effectiveness of the treatment mainly depends on the rapid diagnosis, which is currently performed by indirect immunofluorescence and PCR tests, which require high costs and laboratory structure. In order to propose an alternative methodology, we sought to develop an impedimetric immunosensor (IM) based on the immobilization of specific IgY antibodies for IgG anti Rickettsia rickettsii, using blood plasma from capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), for characterization, va
