Persistent Bartonella quintana Infection in Macaques at Primate Research Institute, Japan.

Bartonella quintana, the causative agent of trench fever, is a louseborne bacterial pathogen. During 2016-2017, we investigated B. quintana infection in macaques housed at 2 primate research institutes in Japan. We isolated B. quintana from 3 wild-caught Japanese macaques, which had been introduced into 1 institute in 2009. The macaques had received periodic ivermectin treatment every 1-2 years to control blood-feeding arthropods. Whole-genome comparisons revealed that the 3 isolates exhibit higher homology to a Japanese macaque-derived strain than to rhesus macaque-derived or human-derived st

Molecular screening for Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Coxiella in head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) collected from primary school girls in Fars Province, Iran (2024).

OBJECTIVE: Lice are obligate ectoparasites divided into two main families: Pediculidae and Phthiridae. Body lice are known vectors of bacterial pathogens like Rickettsia, which cause diseases such as epidemic typhus and trench fever. Although head lice are genetically similar to body lice, they have long been considered a nuisance rather than a medical threat. This is particularly concerning for primary school girls, a vulnerable group with high infestation rates. This study aimed to detect deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from Coxiella, Rickettsia, and Anaplasma in head lice collected from female

Bartonella quintana endocarditis presenting with severe coombs-positive anemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella quintana is a recognized cause of blood culture-negative endocarditis, often associated with predisposing social factors or pre-existing valvulopathy. Diagnosis is challenging and relies on advanced microbiological techniques. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old Tibetan herdsman from a high-altitude region presented with a two-week history of fever, dyspnea, and lower limb edema. He had no history of homelessness or alcoholism but lived in poor sanitary conditions. Laboratory investigations revealed severe Coombs-positive hemolytic anemia and serological markers suggestive

Subacute Bartonella quintana bacteremia following immunomodulatory therapy: a diagnostic challenge.

Bartonella quintana infection presents with a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from asymptomatic to severe disease. Its fastidious growth and immune evasion frequently delay diagnosis, leading to prolonged bacteremia and potential mismanagement. We report a case of subacute Bartonella quintana infection in a patient with newly diagnosed dermatomyositis, presenting with generalized myopathy, persistent low-grade fever, and suspected endocarditis. Blood cultures were intermittently positive, but conventional microbiological methods remained inconclusive. Serology was suggestive, while the defini

Combination antibiotic therapy is required to eliminate Bartonella henselae in multiple microenvironments.

Bartonella are gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacteria. Infection by Bartonella manifests as different clinical syndromes collectively known as bartonellosis. The well-known diseases caused by these bacteria are cat scratch disease (Bartonella henselae), trench fever (Bartonella quintana) and Carrion's disease (Bartonella bacilliformis). Excluding B. bacilliformis, which is evolutionarily more distinct than the other species, Bartonella infections result in self-limiting disease that is often undiagnosed and untreated. However, individuals with compromised immune systems or other und

Climate change impacts on the global potential distribution of the human flea, Pulex irritans, and the global health risks.

The human flea, Pulex irritans, is a hematophagous ectoparasite and medically significant vector of zoonotic pathogens, such as Yersinia pestis (plague), Bartonella quintana (trench fever), and Rickettsia felis (flea-borne spotted fever). Despite the public health significance of P. irritans, the potential impacts of climate change on its global distribution were unstudied before. In this study, we created an ecological niche model (ENM) through integrating 564 georeferenced records and 15 bioclimatic variables using the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm to project the current and future habi

Not to lose control of war: narrative review of military louse control in the first half of XX Century.

INTRODUCTION: Insects and the diseases that they are capable to host have played a crucial role in the outcome of major military operations throughout recorded history. As a matter of fact, regular armies had to fight both against enemy uniform and invisible pathogens; the latter often causing battle casualties more disabling than bullets. METHODS: All the sources present on Pubmed and Google Scholar relating to the fight against Bartonella quintana and Rickettsia prowazeki in the military field during the first and second world wars were studied, with particular attention to the articles pub

The Two-Year Itch: Extreme Body Lice Infestation Complicated by Anemia, Eosinophilia, and Elevated Immunoglobulin E.

Human lice infestation, or pediculosis, remains a significant global public health concern, particularly in vulnerable populations living in overcrowded, poorly hygienic conditions. Lice are known to be vectors for arthropod-borne diseases such as epidemic typhus and trench fever. However, a growing body of evidence suggests their potential role in the pathogenesis of iron deficiency anemia, peripheral eosinophilia, and elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. We report a case of a middle-aged male with a two-year history of extensive pruritic skin lesions in the setting of a visible lice infes

Pathological investigation and microbiological confirmation of Bartonella quintana endocarditis: A case of trench fever without the trench or fever.

Bartonella quintana is a louse-borne Gram-negative bacterium first discovered as the cause of trench fever during World War I. As B. quintana is not identified using routine culture with 5-day incubation, the pathogen is an agent of blood culture-negative endocarditis, particularly among individuals experiencing homelessness. Here, we describe a case of an 80-year-old man who presented in the winter of 2017 with severe aortic valve regurgitation resulting in exercise intolerance, requiring aortic valve replacement. Pathological assessment of the explanted aortic valve revealed changes of infec

Napoleon Bonaparte-A Possible Case of Trench Fever.

In 1789, Napoleon Bonaparte reported having a recurrent febrile illness that initially subsided for 4 days and then had multiple relapses of similar duration. A speculative diagnosis of trench fever would be supported by poor hygiene conditions, prolonged exposure to cold, and the presence of lice in Napoleon's barracks environment.

Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana antigens grown in liquid medium are inferior to cell culture-grown antigen for immunofluorescence IgG testing of patient sera.

Serodiagnosis of Bartonella infections predominantly relies on immunofluorescence assays (IFA) utilizing antigen preparations derived from bacteria co-cultivated with host cells. We compared the diagnostic performances of whole-cell Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana antigens generated in liquid culture with those from cell culture. IFA using liquid culture-derived B. henselae antigens yielded lower IgG antibody titers, and no consistent correlation in IgG titers was observed for B. quintana. We conclude that liquid-cultured Bartonella antigens are inferior to those used in commercial

Paratyphoid fever and relapsing fever in 1812 Napoleon's devastated army.

During Napoleon's retreat from Russia in 1812,1 countless soldiers of the French army succumbed to infectious diseases, but the responsible pathogen or pathogens remain debated.2,3,4,5 We recovered and sequenced ancient DNA from the teeth of 13 soldiers who, based on historical records, likely died from infectious diseases, aiming to identify the pathogens responsible for their deaths.6 Our results confirmed the presence of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica belonging to the lineage Paratyphi C, the causative agent of paratyphoid fever7; and Borrelia recurrentis, responsible for relapsing fev

The Use of Rabbits Used to Propagate Human Lice for Research.

The globally important human diseases of trench fever, epidemic typhus, and relapsing fever are vectored by the human louse Pediculus humanus humanus. Although these conditions are epidemically quiescent at present, they persist in socially dysfunctional situations of war, deprivation, and crowding. The taxonomically closely related head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, does not respect economic or social status and is quite common in most countries. The 2 types of lice are now recognized as conspecific ecotypes of a single species. While the body louse has been adapted for propagation in the

Development of a Technique Using Artificial Membrane for In Vitro Rearing of Body Lice Pediculus humanus humanus.

Human lice are the only hematophagous ectoparasites specific to human hosts. They transmit epidemic typhus, trench fever and relapsing fever, diseases which have already caused millions of deaths worldwide. In order to further investigate lice vectorial capacities, laboratory-controlled live lice colonies are essential. Previously developed lice-rearing methods significantly advanced research on louse-borne diseases and louse biology. In this study, we aimed to develop a rearing technique for the Orlando (Or) strain of body lice on an artificial membrane. We tested two systems, namely the Hemo

Bartonella quintana Endocarditis: A Systematic Review of Individual Cases.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella quintana is a louse-borne bacterium that remains a neglected cause of endocarditis in low-resource settings. Our understanding of risk factors, clinical manifestations, and treatment of B. quintana endocarditis are biased by older studies from high-income countries. METHODS: We searched Pubmed Central, Medline, Scopus, Embase, EBSCO (CABI) Global Health, Web of Science and international trial registers for articles published before March 2023 with terms related to Bartonella quintana endocarditis. We included articles containing case-level information on B. quintana end

Genomic properties of a Bartonella quintana strain from Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) revealed by genome comparison with human and rhesus macaque strains.

Bartonella quintana, the causative agent of trench fever, is an intracellular bacterium that infects human erythrocytes and vascular endothelial cells. For many years, humans were considered the only natural hosts for B. quintana; however, it was recently discovered that wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) also serve as hosts for B. quintana. To elucidate the genetic characteristics of the B. quintana strain MF1-1 isolated from a Japanese macaque, we determined the complete genome sequence of the strain and compared it with those of strain Toulouse from a human and strain RM-11 from a rhes
