Delayed Reduction in the Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Gradient After Endocardial Radiofrequency Ablation for Septal Hypertrophy in a Patient With Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy: A Case Report.

We report a case of a 79-year-old female with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) who demonstrated a delayed reduction in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient following endocardial radiofrequency ablation of septal hypertrophy (ERASH). The patient presented with diffuse interventricular septal thickening and systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the anterior mitral valve leaflet, with a markedly reduced six-minute walking distance of less than 50 meters. To minimize procedural risks, ERASH was performed using the CARTO3 (Biosense Webster, Inc., Irvine, California, USA) and

Methylene Blue Mitigates Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity via KEAP1/NRF2/GPX-4/Caspase3 Modulation.

Doxorubicin (Dox) is a potent anthracycline antitumor drug whose clinical utility is significantly restricted by its dose-dependent, cumulative cardiotoxicity, driven by increased oxidative stress, impaired antioxidant defenses, and apoptosis-mediated cardiomyocyte loss. Methylene blue (MB), a phenothiazine derivative with well-documented redox-modulating properties, is being explored as a viable cardioprotective agent due to its antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects. This study evaluated the protective role of MB against Dox-induced cardiotoxicity in rats by examining its impact on oxidative

Non-Pulmonary Vein Substrate Ablation of Recurrent Atrial Fibrillation in the Patient With Fabry Disease.

Fabry disease (FD) is a rare disease that progressively causes myocardial degeneration. There are only a few low-voltage areas, but some fractionated potentials are present in the left atrium of FD patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Attempting non-pulmonary vein (non-PV) substrate ablation may be worthwhile.

Expanding the role of ultrasonography in cardiopulmonary assessment in dromedary camels.

Dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) have unique cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology that pose diagnostic challenges unlike those in other large ruminants and equids. Ultrasonography, as a non-invasive, portable, and cost-effective imaging tool, offers great potential for cardiopulmonary evaluation-especially in field conditions where early detection is crucial. This review article explores the expanding role of ultrasonography in assessing the camel heart and lungs, emphasizing recent advances and key clinical applications. It begins by outlining anatomical and physiological features rel

The effects of apocynin on ciprofloxacin-induced oxidative stress-related cardiotoxicity.

Ciprofloxacin (CFX), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is known to induce oxidative stress–mediated cardiotoxicity. This study investigates the potential protective and therapeutic effects of apocynin (APO), a selective NADPH oxidase (NOX) inhibitor and potent antioxidant, against CFX-induced myocardial injury in rats. Thirty-two male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 8). CFX (25 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered twice daily for one week, while APO (20 mg/kg, i.p.) was given once daily for four days either before or after CFX treatment. Hemodynamic parameters (heart rate,

Myocardial Fibrosis Caused by Angiotensin II Implant in Rabbit Atherosclerosis Model Induced by High Cholesterol Diet.

Rabbits are widely used in biomedical research as models for atherosclerosis with disease induction achieved through a high-cholesterol diet, transgenic approaches, or spontaneous development with aging. At our institution, New Zealand White rabbits were induced to develop atherosclerosis via a high-cholesterol diet followed by arterial balloon injury. This model was established to support intravascular molecular imaging studies aimed at tracking atheromatous plaque progression in vivo. To accelerate plaque development, a subcutaneous osmotic pump delivering angiotensin II at 50 ng/kg/min was

Comparative Study on the Protective Effect of Thiamine and Thiamine Pyrophosphate Against Hydroxychloroquine-Induced Cardiomyopathy in Rats.

Background: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), widely used in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, has been associated with cardiotoxicity driven by oxidative, mitochondrial, and metabolic disturbances. However, no comparative evidence exists regarding whether thiamine, thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), or their combination (TTPC) can mitigate HCQ-induced myocardial injury. Objective: This study examined the biochemical and histopathological effects of thiamine, TPP, and their combination in a rat model of HCQ-induced cardiomyopathy. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were assigned to five groups: healthy c

Cardiovascular disease reported as modes of death in the Office for National Statistics mortality data: a retrospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: A cause of death is a specific disease or injury which directly led to the death whereas a mode of death which is a mechanism such as respiratory failure, cardiac arrest or cardiac failure but does not provide the cause of death. We sought to establish the scale of use of cardiovascular mode and other non-specific codes as causes of death. DESIGN: We extracted the mortality statistics recorded between 2013 and 2021 and then selected cardiovascular codes. SETTING: The Office for National Statistics mortality data. PARTICIPANTS: Deceased individuals from England and Wales. MAIN OU

Histologic characterization of spontaneous catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy in laboratory New Zealand White rabbits.

Catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy (CCM) is an entity associated with increased levels of catecholamines causing subendocardial and papillary muscle cardiomyocyte degeneration and necrosis. In 2020, 49 autopsies from early rabbit deaths in a colony used for medical device biocompatibility studies were submitted for microscopic examination. Of the 49 rabbits, 26 had histologic changes consistent with CCM. No common stressor for CCM was determined in affected rabbits. Animals were generally male, were 12-16-wk-old, and were found dead or had bloating, lethargy, and/or diarrhea. Those observed

Left atrial low voltage areas and heart failure in patients with atrial fibrillation: Implication of the atrial myopathy.

AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) affect each other and are often co-morbid. The fact that HF development is not uncommon even after ablation suggests that we need a deeper understanding of the pathology of these conditions. Atrial myocardial degeneration is an underlying factor in AF patients and may be associated with HF development after ablation. This study aimed to investigate the impact of low-voltage areas (LVAs) on HF prognosis after AF ablation. METHODS AND RESULTS: This observational study included 1481 consecutive patients undergoing initial ablation for AF. Lef

Inflammatory Reprogramming Mediates Changes in Three-Dimensional Strain Capacity and Cardiac Function in Beagle Dogs with Doxorubicin-Related Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: The cardiotoxicity of doxorubicin (DOX) limits its use in cancer treatment. To address this limitation, we developed a novel animal model that uses beagle dogs to investigate DOX-induced cardiac disorders. Unfortunately, the lack of effective cardioprotection strategies against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity poses a significant challenge. To establish a canine model for low-mortality DOX-induced cardiac dysfunction and explore the relationship between inflammatory reprogramming and DOX-related cardiotoxicity. METHODS: Twenty male beagle dogs aged two years were randomly assigned into

Description of lesions in lambs intoxicated with sodium selenite included in intraruminal boluses: Lambs intoxicated with selenium.

Selenium is an essential micronutrient for ruminants, which participates in the optimal functioning of proteins and enzymes that can combat oxidative stress in the body; however, its toxicity is documented in different species. The objective of this work was to describe macroscopic and microscopic lesions in lambs intoxicated with selenium administered through intraruminal boluses. The main lesions at necropsy were pulmonary oedema; the myocardial surface presented multifocal pale areas; the thyroid and thymus glands were decreased in size, and areas of necrosis, haemorrhage and hyperkeratosis

Incidence of menstrual cycle abnormalities and polycystic ovary syndrome in female Japanese patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The role of androgens.

Gene therapy (GT) products created using adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors tend to exhibit toxicity via immune reactions, but other mechanisms of toxicity remain incompletely understood. We examined the cardiotoxicity of an overexpressed transgenic protein. Male C57BL/6J mice were treated with a single intravenous dose of product X, an AAV-based GT product, at 2.6 × 1013 vg/kg. Necropsies were performed at 24 h, 7 days, and 14 days after dosing. Pathological examination and gene expression analysis were performed on the heart. Histopathologically, hypertrophy and vacuolar degeneration of ca

Accumulation of endogenous Muse cells in the myocardium and its pathophysiological role in patients with fulminant myocarditis.

Multi-lineage differentiating stress-enduring (Muse) cells, identified as pluripotent surface marker SSEA-3(+) cells, are stress tolerant endogenous pluripotent-like stem cells, and are involved in tissue repair. However, the significance of Muse cells in acute myocarditis has not been evaluated. In the present study, we counted Muse cells/area in biopsied myocardial tissue samples from 17 patients with fulminant myocarditis, and 6 with non-inflammatory myocardial disease as controls. Compared with controls, patients with fulminant myocarditis had significantly more Muse cells (p = 0.00042). P

Critical heart failure associated with beta-blocker-induced cardiac phospholipidosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced phospholipidosis (DIPL) is an acquired lysosomal storage disorder characterized by the accumulation of lamellar bodies and phospholipids, typically associated with the use of cationic amphiphilic drugs (CADs). Over 200 marketed CADs, including widely prescribed β-blockers, have the potential to induce phospholipid deposition in various organs. In rare cases, DIPL may lead to secondary cardiomyopathy. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 70-year-old man with a history of hypertension, permanent atrial fibrillation, and Stanford type B aortic dissection. The patient pr

A novel herpesvirus in blue penguins putatively associated with myocardial degeneration and necrosis.

We identified a novel herpesvirus in 2 deceased captive blue penguins (Eudyptula minor). Moderate-to-severe myocardiocyte atrophy and necrosis, and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies (INIBs), were seen in myocardiocytes in one bird; reticuloendothelial (RE) cell INIBs and multifocal RE cell necrosis were seen in both birds. The histologic findings were suggestive of viral infection. A herpesvirus PCR assay was positive in myocardial tissue from the bird with myocardial degeneration and in splenic tissue from both birds. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis showed that the virus, access

Detection, sequencing, and tissue distribution of piscine orthoreovirus 2-like virus in diseased coho salmon in Alaska.

We performed a diagnostic disease investigation on a cohort of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) fingerlings in Alaska exhibiting anorexia, gaping mouths, anemia, and increased mortality. Histologic examination revealed mild-to-severe myocardial degeneration and lymphohistiocytic and neutrophilic myocarditis, moderate splenic histiocytosis, and mild renal histiocytosis. Piscine orthoreoviruses 1 and 3 were not detected by molecular methods, and no other viruses could be cultured on 3 common diagnostic fish cell lines. De novo assembly produced a viral genome of 10 linear segments with >80% ho
