Clinical outcomes associated with abnormal middle cerebral artery Doppler velocities in fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma.

BACKGROUND: Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a rare fetal tumor that may cause progressive hemodynamic compromise, fetal anemia, hydrops, and perinatal death. Although middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity is widely used to assess fetal anemia, its prognostic value in pregnancies complicated by sacrococcygeal teratoma is not well established. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between abnormal fetal middle cerebral artery (MCA) Doppler velocities and neonatal outcomes in pregnancies complicated by fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort st

Obesity-induced changes in ultrastructure and calcium release of female rat cardiomyocytes are partially reversed by aerobic exercise.

Obesity is associated with an elevated risk of pathological cardiac hypertrophy, whereas exercise confers cardioprotective effects; however, the cellular mechanisms underlying these opposing influences remain incompletely defined, particularly in females. We investigated how obesity and exercise affect cardiomyocyte ultrastructure, Ca²⁺ release, and contractility in female Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats and their lean littermates. Animals were assigned at 12 weeks to sedentary or aerobic exercise-trained groups and maintained on a standard diet. By 18 weeks, obese rats exhibited increased body mas

Checkpoint kinase Wee1 activation drives inflammation and hypertrophy through the protein kinase B/phosphoinositide 3-kinases-nuclear factor κB pathway in cardiomyocytes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hypertensive heart failure has an urgent need for new therapeutic targets. Protein kinases act as key regulators in cellular actions relevant to cardiac pathophysiology. This study identified a protein kinase, Wee1 G2 checkpoint kinase (Wee1), being activated and involved in this disease. METHODS: RNA-seq-based kinase enrichment analysis was used to identify the involved kinase pathways. Cardiomyocyte-specific Wee1-deficiency mice with chronic angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion and transverse aortic constriction (TAC) were utilized to develop cardiac remodelling. RNA-seq an

Reference Correlation for the Viscosity of Helium.

As early as 1975, Morganroth and colleagues hypothesized that the cardiac morphological adaptation observed in athletes corresponded with the nature of the haemodynamic stimulus imposed on the ventricles during repeated exercise bouts. Endurance training purportedly leads to an eccentric form of cardiac hypertrophy, principally characterized by increased left ventricular (LV) cavity dimension, and thus LV mass (LVM), as a consequence of prolonged repetitive volume overload. In contrast, strength training is supposedly associated with a concentric form of hypertrophy where increased ventricular

Integrated epigenomic and transcriptomic analyses implicate Car5b in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is a major risk factor for heart failure and is characterized by transcriptional and metabolic remodeling. Although chromatin accessibility is closely associated with transcriptional regulation, how accessibility changes relate to gene-expression and functional changes during hypertrophic stress remains incompletely understood. METHODS: Integrated ATAC-seq and RNA-seq analyses were performed in control and AngII-treated cardiomyocytes, followed by pathway enrichment and mitochondrial gene annotation. Candidate genes were validated in transverse aor

[Cell Death of Cardiomyocytes in Heart Failure].

Heart failure, a leading cause of death worldwide, is generally defined as a pathophysiological condition in which the heart is unable to eject the arterial blood required by all tissues in the body. Heart failure is broadly classified into acute heart failure and chronic heart failure. In clinical practice, acute heart failure is often considered synonymous with acute myocardial infarction. In acute heart failure, cardiac contractile dysfunction is induced due to necrosis of cardiomyocytes during ischemia/reperfusion. In contrast, in chronic (congestive) heart failure, cardiac contractile dys

Unraveling the mystery: congenital absence of the portal vein and its cardiac implications.

A 25-year-old male with tachycardia and right heart enlargement was diagnosed with atrial-ventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) and successfully treated with radiofrequency ablation. Cardiac MRI confirmed right heart enlargement but ruled out cardiomyopathy. Further imaging revealed a rare congenital absence of the portal vein (CAPV) with an associated portosystemic shunt. This case highlights the importance of considering CAPV in unexplained cardiac symptoms and structural heart changes.

Cardiac magnetic resonance feature tracking in Olympic athletes: a myocardial deformation analysis.

AIMS: Athlete's heart induces extreme cardiovascular remodelling, generating challenges for the differential diagnosis with early stages of cardiomyopathies. Advanced cardiac function analysis could be helpful, but data on healthy athletes and the impact of sports disciplines are lacking. The study aims to describe myocardial deformation by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in a cohort of Olympic athletes and to evaluate possible differences based on sports disciplines and sex. METHODS AND RESULTS: A group of Olympic athletes with normal cardiovascular evaluation and a group of sedentary contr

Mitochondria-targeted esculetin mitigates age-associated cardiac remodeling through coordinated activation of AMPK-SIRT1 and inhibition of p38 MAPK signaling.

Age-associated cardiac remodeling, characterized by hypertrophy and fibrosis, is a major contributor to cardiovascular morbidity in the elderly and is often exacerbated by metabolic stressors such as hypercholesterolemia. Given the central role of mitochondrial dysfunction in these processes, we investigated whether mitochondria-targeted esculetin (Mito-Esc) could mitigate pathological cardiac remodeling associated with aging and hypercholesterolemia. To model this condition, we utilized 12-month-old Apoe-/- mice, which exhibit chronic hypercholesterolemia and develop age-related cardio-metabo

Diagnostic accuracy of electrocardiographic parameters to detect left atrial enlargement in children with post-tricuspid left-to-right shunt.

BACKGROUND: Left atrial enlargement is a surrogate marker for disease progression in congenital post-tricuspid left-to-right shunt lesions. Despite advanced imaging, a need persists for a more accessible modality like electrocardiography for early detection of left atrial enlargement. This study evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of established electrocardiography standards and a novel electrocardiography criterion (with altered position of chest leads) in identifying left atrial enlargement in children with post-tricuspid shunt lesions, enabling routine monitoring and timely referrals. A rare congenital triad: ebsteinoid tricuspid valve, giant right atrial aneurysm, and atrial septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Ebstein anomaly is a rare congenital malformation of the tricuspid valve, accounting for less than 1% of all congenital heart diseases. Ebsteinoid anomaly is an uncommon morphological variant characterized by abnormal tricuspid valve leaflet morphology without the classical apical displacement of the septal leaflet seen in Ebstein anomaly. The coexistence of an Ebsteinoid anomaly, giant right atrial aneurysm (RAA), and atrial septal defect (ASD) is exceptionally rare. Reversal of canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway attenuates gestational diabetes mellitus-induced offspring cardiac hypertrophy: mechanistic insights into pathological remodeling.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a prevalent prenatal metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia occurring in approximately 9.2% of pregnancies globally, imposes significant cardiovascular risks on offspring, including developmental cardiac hypertrophy and long-term functional impairment. Despite its clinical importance, the molecular mechanisms governing GDM-induced cardiac malformations remain elusive. AIMS: This study aimed to delineate the regulatory role of the Wnt/β-catenin/Tcf7l2 signaling pathway in mediating pathological cardiac remodeling in GDM-exposed offspr

Phenotypic spectrum of 19p13.3 microdeletion: a fatal infant case with severe cardiomegaly and gastrointestinal manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 19p13.3 microdeletion syndrome is a rare and clinically heterogeneous genomic disorder. It is typically characterized by a wide spectrum of manifestations, including global developmental delay, various congenital anomalies, and distinct craniofacial dysmorphisms. Current literature suggests that phenotypic severity and the specific symptoms are highly dependent on the precise size and gene content of the deleted region. METHODS AND RESULTS: Here we report the case of an 8-month-old female infant referred for evaluation of multisystemic complications. Clinical examinatio

STIP1 signaling drives protein synthesis in pathological cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.

Background: Stress-inducible phosphoprotein 1 (STIP1) is a co-chaperone involved in neuronal proteostasis and stress resilience. Although expressed in the heart, its role remains undefined. We assessed whether STIP1 deficiency impacts cardiac physiology and stress responses. Methods: STIP1 expression was analyzed in cardiac tissue from patients with heart failure. Haploinsufficient STIP1 mice (STIP1+/-) received 7 days of isoproterenol (ISO) to induce cardiac injury, followed by proteomic, histological, and cardiomyocyte analyses. In vitro, neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) underwent STIP1 s

METTL7B attenuates pathological cardiac hypertrophy via m6A-associated regulation of HK3.

Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is a major contributor to heart failure, yet the epitranscriptomic mechanisms that restrain maladaptive remodeling remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the role of METTL7B and its association with m6A-related regulation of HK3 in pathological cardiac hypertrophy. By integrating RNA-seq and MeRIP-seq data from human hypertrophic and failing hearts, we identified coordinated downregulation of METTL7B and HK3, accompanied by reduced m6A enrichment of HK3 transcripts. Additional analysis of an independent human hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
