Raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) have become increasingly popular among pet owners, despite well-documented risks of contamination with pathogenic bacteria capable of causing severe illness in companion animals. This report describes a fatal case of botulism in a 3-year-old female Labrador Retriever weighing 37 kg that was fed exclusively RMBD. The dog presented with acute-onset flaccid paralysis of the limbs approximately 48 h after possible ingestion of decomposing raw meat discarded in household waste. Supportive therapy, including fluid administration, nutritional support and eventual mechanic

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of Clostridioides difficile co-colonization of 107 California patients with suspect infant botulism (IB) was studied over a two-year period. One set of twins with lab-confirmed IB and C. difficile co-colonization was followed longitudinally and their isolated C. difficile was typed by restriction endonuclease analysis (REA).
METHODS: Stool specimens sent to California Department of Public Health for routine IB diagnostic testing were cultured for C. botulinum and C. difficile. After diagnostic testing identified twin IB patients, their stools collected at weekly and

Bovine botulism is a lethal disease caused by Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT). In cattle, the most frequent form of this disease in several South American countries and elsewhere is caused by BoNT type D, which has been associated with phosphorus deficiency, leading to pica and osteophagy. An outbreak of botulism occurred in a fully vaccinated 600-steer herd of cattle. The cattle were grazing on native pasture in a paddock in which several decomposing animal carcasses were found; the animals had performed osteophagy. The first 2 deaths were recorded in November 2016, and the number of

Botulinum toxin (BT) is infamous for its extreme toxicity. If it enters the bloodstream, it can cause botulism presenting with a typical pattern of motor and autonomic dysfunction. An international expert panel organised by IAB-Interdisciplinary Working Group for Movement Disorders explored iatrogenic botulism after BT's medical use (IB), reached conclusions and formulated recommendations. When injected into its target tissue, BT binds to gangliosides on cholinergic nerve terminals before it is internalised permanently. Small amounts of BT, however, are circulating within the bloodstream. When

Neuromuscular junction (NMJ) disorders such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, and botulism are characterized by impaired synaptic transmission leading to weakness. This review examines the electrodiagnostic evaluation of these conditions, emphasizing the importance of techniques such as repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) and single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG) for confirming the diagnosis and distinguishing presynaptic from postsynaptic defects. The reduced safety factor of neuromuscular transmission (NMT) in postsynaptic disorders produces a decrement in compound musc

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the risks associated with infant botulism in Oman by examining honey-feeding practices among infants and related sociodemographic and clinical factors.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included Omani mothers with children under 5 years and were conveniently recruited from health centres. Mothers completed an infant feeding practices and beliefs survey between October 2023 and March 2024. Data were represented as frequencies and percentages and analysed via Chi-square test and logistic regression.
RESULTS: A total of 3,222 participants were included o

Diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease that remains endemic in several developing countries. Neurological complications, such as polyneuropathy, are rare but serious, often mimicking other neuromuscular disorders and leading to delayed diagnosis. Herein, we report the case of a 20-year-old incompletely immunised woman who presented with bilateral ptosis, multiple cranial neuropathies, and mild limb weakness following a prodrome of fever, headache, and peri-orbital pain. Initial investigations revealed albumin-cytologic dissociation in the cerebrospinal fluid, raising suspicion of Guillain

UNLABELLED: Island endemic birds are under greater threat than their mainland counterparts. Sedentary living and historically reduced predation may affect island bird sociality and inform their conservation and management. However, detailed studies on their sociality are uncommon. The federally- endangered koloa maoli ( Anas wyvilliana, Hawaiian duck, or koloa) is primarily threatened by hybridization with feral mallards and avian botulism outbreaks. We used capture-mark-recapture and genetic data on koloa on the island of Kaua'i, a stronghold of remaining koloa, to construct social networks a

With the increase of sporadic cases of foodborne botulism and the occurrence of several large incidents of botulinum contamination in food, botulism has received greater attention in clinical practice. Foodborne botulinum toxin poisoning is an acute foodborne toxic disease caused by ingestion of food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum exotoxin. We present two cases of foodborne botulism affecting a mother and daughter who were admitted to our department after consumption of vacuum-packed rabbit-head meat. The time to symptom onset was less than 24 h in the daughter (aged 8 years) and 1 we

Botulism is a rare but high-consequence foodborne intoxication in which early recognition and prompt reporting are essential for a timely public health response. We conducted a retrospective review of suspected botulism notifications reported through the hospital notifiable-disease system at National Taiwan University Hospital from 2014 to 2024. Demographics, presenting features, time from hospital presentation to notification, specimen types, and reference laboratory results were summarized, and the institutional response workflow was described as the operational context. Between 2014 and 202

Infant botulism is a rare and life-threatening condition if left untreated. We report the case of a previously healthy four-week-old male in Arkansas, who presented with progressive lethargy, feeding difficulties, and respiratory compromise following a recent viral respiratory illness. His clinical course was notable for worsening hypotonia, absent reflexes, and eventual respiratory failure requiring intubation. Extensive evaluation for infectious, neurologic, and metabolic causes was initially unrevealing, but further exposure history revealed constipation paired with recent soil exposure, ra

AbstractThis report details the identification of an outbreak of infant botulism linked to powdered infant formula in the United States. In October 2025, the Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program, California Department of Public Health (IBTPP-CDPH) noted common powdered infant formula exposure among three neonates with suspected infant botulism. Subsequent laboratory analyses at CDPH identified Clostridium botulinum type A from an open container of ByHeart powdered infant formula associated with one infant with infant botulism. As of December 10, 2025, 51 suspected or confirmed infa

Botulism is a life-threatening disease caused by botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) released by Clostridium bacteria. BoNTs induce a flaccid paralysis by blocking neurotransmitter release from peripheral cholinergic neurons via soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) cleavage. The enteric nervous system (ENS) controls antimicrobial defense reactions within the intestine through neuron-released mediators. Here, we show that subclinical doses of BoNT/A and BoNT/B, which are not sufficient to cause botulism when released in the intestinal lumen, paralyze ENS neuro

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are bacterial protein toxins that cause the severe and potentially fatal neuro-paralytic disease botulism in humans and vertebrate animals. Together with tetanus toxin (TeNT), BoNTs comprise the large family of clostridial neurotoxins (CNTs). Structurally, CNTs share conserved features: a 50 kDa zinc-dependent light chain endopeptidase with an HExxH motif linked via a disulfide bond to a 100 kDa heavy chain with distinct domains for translocation and receptor binding that mediate neuronal specificity. During the last decade, genomic analyses have uncovered bont-li

BACKGROUND: Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum) is known for producing one of the strongest neurotoxins, namely botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT). This toxin is responsible for causing botulism, which is considered a severe neurological disease.
OBJECTIVES: This comprehensive narrative review highlights the dual nature of C. botulinum as both a serious health threat and a groundbreaking therapeutic agent. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed/Medline, and Scopus (1971-2025, 2020-2025 literary focus) using keywords related to botulism pathogenesis, clini

Botulism is a rare but severe neurological disease caused by botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs). Standard diagnostic methods including the mouse bioassay (SMB) and bont gene type-specific PCR, are often limited by the high genetic diversity among bont subtypes, which can lead to false-negative results. The nontoxin-nonhemagglutinin (ntnh) gene is highly conserved and exclusively co-located with the bont gene complex. Thus, this study evaluates the use of ntnh gene as a complementary diagnostic tool for botulism and assesses its association with BoNT types. The ntnh gene was detected in a prospectiv

A multi-state outbreak of equine botulism occurred between December 2022 and March 2023 in the United States. Follow-up and testing were performed on 42 horses, including 24 that died or were euthanized in the outbreak that affected ~98 horses. Affected horses had all been exposed to the same commercial feed. Clinical signs included progressive muscle weakness and tremors, recumbency, and colic. No significant gross or microscopic abnormalities were observed on autopsy. Feces and gastrointestinal content were tested for various infectious agents, including botulinum toxin; fecal samples from 2

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), among the most potent biological toxins, rely on co-produced nontoxic proteins to survive harsh gastrointestinal conditions and achieve efficient systemic dissemination after oral exposure. Recent structural and functional studies have revealed how BoNTs bind to the nontoxic non-hemagglutinin (NTNH) factors to engage in interactions with either OrfXs/P47 or hemagglutinins (HAs) components for systemic dissemination. This review synthesizes recent findings that elucidate the molecular basis of NTNH-specific anchoring to the HA70 triskelion-like element or to the h
