Essential oils (EOs) hold significant potential as antimicrobials in food, due to their high concentration of active phenolic compounds. These compounds can target bacterial cells through various mechanisms, such as membrane disruption, quorum sensing inhibition, and interference in virulence factors, affecting microorganisms at a genomic level. Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis are key foodborne bacteria that could be managed using these natural preservatives. The present study investigated the effects of stress induced by applying Thymus vulgaris and Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum EOs on

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), the causative agents of botulism, are proteins consisting of an N-terminal catalytic Light Chain (LC) and a C-terminal Heavy Chain (HC), which comprises a LC-translocation domain (HCN) and a receptor binding domain (HCC). There are seven BoNT serotypes (A-G) and multiple subtypes. Currently, there is no approved vaccine against botulism available for human use. Several studies have investigated BoNT domains, multi-domains, or mutated holotoxins as candidate BoNT vaccines. However, residual toxicity has been observed in mutated full-length BoNTs and multi-domain (

The neurotoxin BoNT/B2 is the predominant Clostridium parabotulinum subtype in foodborne and infant botulism cases in Spain. This study characterizes a novel case of foodborne botulism in Spain caused by a dual-toxin A1(B5) strain. A 64-year-old male presented with acute, progressive flaccid paralysis including diplopia, dysphagia, and respiratory failure. Although botulism was not initially suspected, the patient recovered with supportive care and without antitoxin administration. Genomic characterization confirmed the presence of both bont/A1 and silent bont/B5 genes. The bont/A1 gene was as

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), produced by the anaerobic spore-forming bacterium Clostridium botulinum, are among the most potent known biological toxins. BoNTs cause lethal botulism via contaminated food, wound infections, or infant intestinal colonization, posing significant threats to public health. Although the mouse bioassay is still being considered as the gold standard for detecting BoNTs, its drawbacks, including the lengthy experimental duration, high costs, and ethical issues, highlight the urgent need to develop alternative methods to fulfill the detection requirements. In recent ye

Botulism is a rare but potentially life-threatening neuroparalytic condition caused by Clostridium botulinum toxin, which has significant maternal and fetal health consequences during pregnancy, necessitating a careful review of existing literature. We conducted a comprehensive literature review, searching databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Embase for studies published through June 2025. This search was supplemented by hand-searching and the translation of foreign articles. We included studies describing clinical cases of botulism in pregnant patients or reporting on botulinum antitoxin saf

OBJECTIVE: This article covers the clinical presentations, investigations, differential diagnosis, and principles of management of botulism, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), and congenital myasthenic syndromes.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Well-recognized guidelines exist for the management of botulism and LEMS, but resource limitations may affect implementation globally. Several genes recently reported to cause congenital myasthenic syndromes are involved in ubiquitously expressed proteins and present with a complex non-neuromuscular junction phenotype, wherein abnormal neuromuscular juncti

In June 2025, 25 botulism cases were identified among recipients of botulinum neurotoxin-containing cosmetic injections in North East England. A case-control study indicated that cases were more likely to have attended two specific practitioners and received an unlicensed product (p < 0.001). Testing of seized product detected a potency (370 units/vial) that was higher than listed on its labelling (200 units/vial). Strengthened regulation of cosmetic procedures is necessary for mitigating public health risks, which are exacerbated by the availability of unlicensed products.

The increasing use of bee products in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries has intensified interest in their therapeutic properties. However, the safety of these natural compounds warrants careful consideration, particularly within the context of pharmacovigilance. This study aimed to conduct an integrative review of the scientific literature and official pharmacovigilance databases (Notivisa, EudraVigilance, FDA/MedWatch, TGA, among others) to identify adverse effects and toxicological risks associated with the use of honey, apitoxin (bee venom), propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen

PURPOSE: Infant botulism is an uncommon but serious condition arising from honey containing spores of Clostridium botulinum. Despite this well-understood risk, practices like tahnik, where honey or dates are fed to newborns, continue as customs in many cultures. Understanding these traditions is important for informing global public health strategies. This study aimed to determine maternal awareness about infant botulism, investigate the prevalence of tahnik, and recognize factors affecting its practice in a Muslim community.
DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional survey.
METHODS: A total of 41

Botulinum Neurotoxin Serotype A (BoNT/A), responsible for most human botulism cases, inhibits neurotransmitter release by cleaving the target protein SNAP-25. Previous literature demonstrated that BoNT/A mediated cleavage of a small subset of the SNAP-25 pool, resulting in SNAP-25 (1-197) fragments, is sufficient to block exocytosis. SNAP-25 (1-197) potentially competes against intact SNAP-25 for SNARE complexes and blocks neurotransmission through a dominant-negative mechanism. However, how a tiny fraction of cleaved SNAP-25 efficiently outcompetes a large pool of intact SNAP-25 remains unkno

BACKGROUND: Foodborne botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. Although dairy-related cases are rare, they remain a public health concern, especially in regions where traditional food preparation methods are common.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case series describes botulism in three family members-including a pregnant woman-following the consumption of homemade dairy products. All presented with varying degrees of neurological and respiratory symptoms. Two required intubation and intensive care. Laboratory findings confirmed neurotoxin type A

Botulism is a rare but life-threatening condition that primarily results from ingestion of food contaminated with the exotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. Although uncommon in clinical settings, it is characterized by acute onset, severe manifestations, and a high mortality rate. Outbreaks linked to egg consumption are rarely reported, and cases occurring during pregnancy are even less common, posing unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a family cluster of botulism in China that was associated with the consumption of homemade fermented eggs. All affected individuals

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is widely used in cosmetic practice and generally considered safe, with adverse effects usually limited to transient local reactions. Rarely, systemic spread or counterfeit formulations can cause iatrogenic botulism, presenting with bulbar weakness and generalized neuromuscular dysfunction. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman who developed progressive dysphagia, bilateral ptosis, bifacial weakness, and proximal muscle weakness following cosmetic BoNT-A injections to the face and masseter muscles. Imaging and endoscopic evaluations were unremarkable, and my

OBJECTIVES: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a formulary of biologic agents and drugs not available commercially in the United States. For a subset of these (botulism and diphtheria antitoxins and, until 2022, intravenous artesunate for severe malaria), distribution is coordinated through CDC port health stations (PHS), located mainly at major US international airports. CDC aims for these drugs to reach their destinations within 8 hours of release authorization. We analyzed CDC records to identify areas for efficiency improvement.
DESIGN: We queried records detai

Botulism is a life-threatening neurotoxin-mediated disease characterized by flaccid descending paralysis which begins with cranial nerve palsies and might progress to extremity weakness and respiratory failure. Respiratory failure following cosmetic injections were scarcely reported due to the low dose of botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) used. We present two cases of respiratory failure and multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria infection resulted from botulism following cosmetic injections. A 24-year-old female developed symptoms of dysphagia, blurred vision and dysarthria 6 days after cosme

We report the case of a 35-year-old woman who developed progressive neuromuscular weakness, bulbar symptoms, and dysphagia following administration of unlicensed cosmetic botulinum toxin at home by a non-medical acquaintance. Her husband, who received injections from the same vial, was admitted to intensive care and required intubation. Our patient required close airway monitoring, antitoxin therapy, immunoglobulins, and multidisciplinary support, but did not require ventilatory support. She gradually improved and was discharged with ongoing outpatient neurology and speech therapy follow-up. T
