[An analysis of the dynamics of the main types of stroke and pathogenetic variants of ischemic stroke].

To analyze the main changes in the prevalence of stroke types and pathogenetic variants of ischemic stroke based on the data obtained from seven regions of the Russian Federation among the population aged 25 years and older. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 29 779 cases of stroke, of which 4167 cases were registered in 2009 and 3402 cases in 2016, were detected during the period from 2009 to 2016. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The comparative analysis showed that the proportion of unspecified stroke (unspecified as a hemorrhage and or heart attack) decreased by 11 times from 4.7% to 0.4% (p<0.001). Infection During Delivery Hospitalization and Risk of Readmission for Postpartum Stroke.

Background and Purpose- Most cases of pregnancy-related ischemic stroke (IS) and hemorrhagic stroke (HS) occur postpartum. Infections have been identified as a trigger for strokes in young people and have been associated with strokes during delivery hospitalizations, but a temporal relationship has been difficult to establish. We hypothesized that infections diagnosed during a delivery admission would be associated with an increased risk of readmission for postpartum stroke. Methods- We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's National Readmiss

Health Care Utilization and Direct Costs Among Patients Diagnosed with Cluster Headache in U.S. Health Care Claims Data.

BACKGROUND: Cluster headache (CH) is a rare trigeminal cephalalgia that is associated with extremely painful unilateral headache attacks and autonomic symptoms. Attacks may be episodic or chronic and associated with substantial suffering due to excruciating pain and limited treatment options. Frequent cluster headaches cause substantial burden for patients, resulting in reduced productivity caused by disability, as well as direct costs in some European countries. Less is known, however, about direct costs of recurring health care resource utilization (HCRU) in the United States. OBJECTIVE: To

Epidemiology of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury with Intracranial Hemorrhage: Focusing Predictive Models for Neurosurgical Intervention.

OBJECTIVE: To outline differences in neurosurgical intervention (NI) rates between intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) types in mild traumatic brain injuries and help identify which ICH types are most likely to benefit from creation of predictive models for NI. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study of adult patients spanning 3 years at 4 U.S. trauma centers was performed. Patients were included if they presented with mild traumatic brain injury (Glasgow Coma Scale score 13-15) with head CT scan positive for ICH. Patients were excluded for skull fractures, "unspecified hemorrhage," or coagulopa

Validation of an algorithm that determines stroke diagnostic code accuracy in a Japanese hospital-based cancer registry using electronic medical records.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to validate an algorithm that determines stroke diagnostic code accuracy, in a hospital-based cancer registry, using electronic medical records (EMRs) in Japan. METHODS: The subjects were 27,932 patients enrolled in the hospital-based cancer registry of Osaka University Hospital, between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2015. The ICD-10 (international classification of diseases, 10th revision) diagnostic codes for stroke were extracted from the EMR database. Specifically, subarachnoid hemorrhage (I60); intracerebral hemorrhage (I61); cerebral infarction (I63); and

A case of intrauterine lethal fetal injury after attempted suicide of the mother.

Traumatic injuries in pregnancy such as abdominal trauma, pelvic fractures and penetrating trauma are major causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The most common causes of trauma during pregnancy are motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, gunshots, and burns. Pregnancy itself has been identified as a risk factor for trauma, together with a younger age, drug use, alcohol use, and domestic violence. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman, 34 weeks pregnant, who attempted suicide by jumping from a flyover, immediately after a probably deliberate traffic collision with the

Comorbidity and the increased mortality after hospitalization for stroke: a population-based cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Essentials Comorbidity is prevalent in the stroke population and affects post-stroke survival. A stroke patient cohort (n = 201 691) and a general population cohort were followed for survival. Cancer and advanced renal/liver disease substantially increased one-year stroke mortality. Tailoring stroke interventions according to comorbidity may reduce excess mortality. SUMMARY: Background Comorbidity is prevalent among stroke patients, affecting post-stroke survival. It remains unknown whether comorbidity impacts post-stroke mortality beyond the combined individual effects of stroke

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration due to P301L tau mutation showing apathy and severe frontal atrophy but lacking other behavioral changes: A case report and literature review.

The clinical features in cases that have mutations in the microtubule-associated protein tau gene but lack prominent behavioral changes remain unclear. Here, we describe detailed clinical and pathological features of a case carrying the P301L tau mutation that showed only apathy until the middle stage of the course. The mother of this case was suspected to have mild cognitive decline at age 46. However, before she was fully examined, she had a subarachnoid hemorrhage at age 49 and died at age 53. An autopsy was not done. The proband of this pedigree, a 60-year-old right-handed Japanese man at

Long-Term Risk of Dementia Among Survivors of Ischemic or Hemorrhagic Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke is a risk factor for dementia, but the risk of dementia after different stroke types is poorly understood. We examined the long-term risk of dementia among survivors of any first-time stroke and of first-time ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. METHODS: We conducted a 30-year nationwide population-based cohort study using data from Danish medical databases (1982-2013) covering all Danish hospitals. We identified 84 220 ischemic stroke survivors, 16 723 intracerebral hemorrhage survivors, 9872 subarachnoid hemorrhage survivors,

Enlarged subarachnoid spaces and intracranial hemorrhage in children with accidental head trauma.

OBJECTIVE Benign external hydrocephalus (BEH) is an enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces (SASs) that can be seen in young children. It is controversial whether children with BEH are predisposed to developing subdural hemorrhage (SDH) with or without trauma. This issue is clinically relevant as a finding of unexplained SDH raises concerns about child abuse and often prompts child protection and law enforcement investigations. METHODS This retrospective study included children (1-24 months of age) who underwent head CT scanning after an accidental fall of less than 6 feet. Head CT scans were r

Risk factors for all-cause death after diagnosis of unruptured intracranial aneurysms.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated all-cause mortality and risk factors of death of patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) in a long-term follow-up study. METHODS: A total of 142 patients with 181 UIAs diagnosed between 1956 and 1978 when UIAs were not treated were included in this study. Patients were followed until death or until 2011 to 2012. Mortality rates and risk factors were studied with Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS: During 3,530 person-years, 113 (80%) had died, giving an average annual mortality of 3.2%. Of them

Neurologic injury in snowmobiling.

BACKGROUND: Snowmobiles are increasingly popular recreational, all-terrain utility vehicles that require skill and physical strength to operate given their inherent maneuverability, acceleration, and top speed capabilities. These same characteristics increase the risk of injury with the operation of these vehicles, particularly neurological injury. We characterize our series of 107 patients involved in snowmobiling accidents. METHODS: From January 2004 to January 2012, all snowmobiling-related injuries referred to our regional trauma center were reviewed. Information had been recorded in the

Readmission, mortality, and first-year medical costs after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and mortality in Taiwan, resulting in a tremendous burden on the healthcare system. The purpose of this study was to characterize disease burden by evaluating readmissions, mortality, and medical cost during the first year after acute stroke under the National Health Insurance (NHI) program. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study extracted information about patients hospitalized with acute stroke from claims data of 200,000 randomly sampled NHI enrollees in Taiwan, with a 1-year follow-up duration. The incidence of the first-year a
