[Broca's area and Broca's aphasia: based on the observations of two cases with the lesions involving Broca's area].

Recently, the relation between Broca's area and Broca's aphasia has come into notice again. We investigated two right-handed patients without Broca's aphasia in spite of the presence of lesions involving Broca's area after hemorrhagic infarction. In addition, the clinical findings, the clinical courses and the sites of lesions of two cases were quite similar as follows. They showed no motor deficits and no other abnormal neurological findings from the beginning of the strokes. From the near muteness in the initial stage, speech began to improve gradually. And then, they demonstrated so called

[A case of pure word deafness and auditory agnosia associated with bilateral temporo-parietal lesions].

A-49-year-old right-handed female was reported. She showed pure word deafness and auditory agnosia because of bilateral temporo-parietal lesions. The left lesion resulted from angiospasm of the left anterior and middle cerebral arteries after subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a ruptured aneurysm of the left carotid artery, and the right one resulted from subcortical hematoma after the V-P shunt operation. CT scan revealed the abnormal low density area on the bilateral temporo-parietal regions seven months after onset. Neurophychological findings were as follows: there were no aphasic symptoms suc

Acute changes in regional brain water content following experimental closed head injury.

A Remington humane stunner was used to deliver blows to the skulls of anesthetized cats. The animals were sacrificed at 30 minutes or 1, 2, or 6 hours after trauma and selected for data collection on the basis of the following two categories of gross intracranial pathology: 1) unilateral contusion, with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH); or 2) SAH only. For selected cats, specific gravity was measured in 5- to 10-mg samples of uncontused tissue taken from coronal slices at the level of the frontoparietal suture. The regions tested included dorsal cerebral cortex, subcortical white matter, deep whi

The correlation between electroencephalographical and neuropathological findings in acute stage of cerebrovascular disease.

A study was conducted on the electroencephalographical and neuropathological correlations on 96 cases of cerebrovascular disease in order to elucidate the reasons why EEGs are often misleading in the diagnosis of location and size cerebrovascular lesions. The study showed that EEG findings are particularly misleading when the lesions were in the locations as follows: 1) subcortical deep infarctions, 2) cortical infarctions occupying a small proportion of cerebral convexity, or involving an entire hemisphere, or affecting the right hemisphere, 3) basilar thrombosis and infratentorial hemorrhage

Aphasia after left hemispheric intracerebral hemorrhage.

The function of subcortical nuclear structures in language is uncertain, and language disorders after injury to these structures are described incompletely. We report 15 patients with left putaminal or thalamic hemorrhage, describe the range of language and behavioral disorders produced, and review the potential mechanisms of these disorders. Clinicoanatomic correlations revealed no definite differences between aphasia after hemorrhage in putamen or in thalamus.

Equine leucoencephalomalacia (ELEM): a study of Fusarium moniliforme as an etiologic agent.

Signs and lesions characteristic of equine leucoencephalomalacia were produced in one of two donkeys given corn cultured with Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon. Gross and histopathologic lesions of the cerebrum included an extensive necrotic cavitation within one cerebral hemisphere, disruption and rarefication of the subcortical white matter, prominent perivascular hemorrhage, and some mononuclear cell perivascular cuffing. Another donkey and three rabbits fed the cultured corn did not develop characteristic signs or lesions of the toxicosis. Chick bioassay studies indicated that the cultured corn

[Pathohistologic and biochemical changes in the brain in atherosclerosis with hemorrhagic foci].

On the basis of a pathomorphological and biochemical study of 22 cases with focal hemorrhages in atherosclerosis the author detected a contraction of nerve cells, adipose infiltration, "shadow-cells", a deposit of ferrum in the cytoplasma. The swelling of myelinic fibres was detected more often than hypermyelinization, fragmentation and demyelinization. Glia changes consisted in ameboid transformation and clasmatodendrosis. The maximum increase of the cholesterin amount was observed in pons varoli. Medulla oblongata and dentate nucleus and the minimum--in the cerebellar cortex and cerebrum hem

Temporary regional cerebral ischemia in the cat. A model of hemorrhagic and subcortical infarction.

A comparison was made on some of the effects that temporary and permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery may have on the circulation to the ipsilateral hemisphere in the cat. Reperfusibility of the corresponding capillary bed was unimpaired for the initial six hours after occluding the vessel, as demonstrated by in vivo intravenous injection of carbon black. Short-term occlusion of the middle cerebral artery, followed by re-opening of the vessel, resulted in either (a) no demonstrable parenchymal lesions (i.e., areas of softening), (b) smaller lesions, or (c) infarctions that were eit
