Neuroinvasive Potential of Monkeypox Virus: A 25-Year Systematic Review.

Monkeypox (MPX) is a zoonotic disease, caused by the MPX virus. Clinical symptoms and signs of the disease are similar to, but less severe than, smallpox, presenting with fever, headache, lymphadenopathy, back pain, myalgia, and skin rash. MPX can affect the central nervous system causing different complications, including encephalitis, cerebral edema, and intracranial hemorrhage. This study aimed to assess the neurological sequelae of MPX infection focusing on the available literature. An extensive data search was conducted in September 2024, covering the period from January 2000 to August 20

Exosomes derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells pretreated by monosialoteterahexosyl ganglioside alleviate intracerebral hemorrhage by down-regulating autophagy.

PURPOSE: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) results in substantial morbidity, mortality, and disability. Depleting neural cells in advanced stages of ICH poses a significant challenge to recovery. The objective of our research is to investigate the potential advantages and underlying mechanism of exosomes obtained from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUMSCs) pretreated with monosialoteterahexosyl ganglioside (GM1) in the prevention of secondary brain injury (SBI) resulting from ICH. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In vitro, hUMSCs were cultured and induced to differentiate into neuron-like cel

Long-Term Outcomes in Patients With Spontaneous Cerebellar Hemorrhage: An International Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the cerebellum has a poor short-term prognosis, whereas data on the long-term case fatality and recurrent vascular events are sparse. Herewith, we aimed to assess the long-term case fatality and recurrence rate of vascular events after a first cerebellar ICH. METHODS: In this international cohort study, we included patients from 10 hospitals (the United States and Europe from 1997 to 2017) aged ≥18 years with a first spontaneous cerebellar ICH who were discharged alive. Data on long-term case fatality and recurrence of vascular events

Fatal Vertebral Artery Dissection Following Self-Manipulation of the Cervical Spine.

Cervical spine manipulation is a known risk factor for vertebral artery dissection. In this report, we present a case of fatal vertebral artery dissection that occurred as the result of self-manipulation of the cervical spine. The decedent was a 40-year-old man with no significant past medical history. He was observed to "crack his neck" while at work. Soon after, he began experiencing neck pain, then developed strokelike symptoms and became unresponsive. He was transported to a local medical center, where imaging showed bilateral vertebral artery dissection. His neurological status continued

Pretreated MSCs with IronQ Transplantation Attenuate Microglia Neuroinflammation via the cGAS-STING Signaling Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a devastating form of stroke, is characterized by elevated morbidity and mortality rates. Neuroinflammation is a common occurrence following ICH. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have exhibited potential in treating brain diseases due to their anti-inflammatory properties. However, the therapeutic efficacy of MSCs is limited by the intense inflammatory response at the transplantation site in ICH. Hence, enhancing the function of transplanted MSCs holds considerable promise as a therapeutic strategy for ICH. Notably, the iron-quercetin complex (IronQ), a

Delayed levodopa-responsive parkinsonism following acute midbrain injury.

Acute midbrain injury may cause both hyperkinetic movement disorders and parkinsonism. The temporal interval between the insult and the emergence of hyperkinetic disorders can last years. A delayed appearance of parkinsonism, on the other hand, was rarely described. We present three cases of male patients (50-, 58- and 28-year-old) who developed levodopa-responsive parkinsonism 20, 8 and two years, respectively, after acute brain insult involving the midbrain. Insults included subcortical intracerebral hemorrhage dissecting into the midbrain, embolic basilar occlusion and trauma. A fluorodopa

The Impact of Enteral Nimodipine on Endothelial Cell Apoptosis in an Animal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Model.

BACKGROUND: Enteral nimodipine is the most evidence-based and widely used drug for the treatment of delayed cerebral ischemia and is known to have various neuroprotective functions. However, the neuroprotective mechanism of nimodipine still remains unclear, and the effects of nimodipine remain ambiguous. Herein, we studied the effect of enteral nimodipine on endothelial apoptosis after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). METHODS: SAH was experimentally introduced in white rabbits (n = 42) that were grouped as follows: enteral nimodipine (SAH-nimodipine group, n = 14), a control that received norma

Feasibility of intranasal human milk as stem cell therapy in preterm infants with intraventricular hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a common cause of preterm brain injury. Fresh parent's own milk (POM) contains pluripotent stem cells (SCs) that produce neuronal cells in-vitro. The permeable neonatal blood brain barrier potentially allows SC delivery. We performed the first prospective trial (clinicaltrials.gov NCT04225286) of feasibility of intranasal POM (IPOM) in preterm infants with IVH and described SC content of POM samples. STUDY DESIGN: 37 Infants (mean gestation 27.7 ± 2.6 weeks, birthweight 1030 ± 320 g) with IVH (35.1% grade IV) were recruited from two tertiary Tor

Prenatal diagnosis of cerebellar hemorrhage: A case report.

We report the case of a fetus with a sonographic diagnosis of hyperechogenic cerebellum at 28 weeks' gestation, which was suspected to be of hemorrhagic origin on fetal ultrasound. As an adjunct to ultrasound, fetal MRI can confirm the hemorrhagic origin of hyperechogenic cerebellar lesions, particularly by showing a high signal on T1-weighted images. No etiological factors for fetal hemorrhage were found other than maternal hypertension and aspirin use. Postnatal MRI confirmed the prenatal diagnosis of cerebellar hemorrhage without underlying vascular anomaly.

SENP1 facilitates OM-MSC differentiation through activating OPTN-mediated mitophagy to mitigate the neurologic impairment following ICH.

Previous studies have indicated the neuroprotective effect of olfactory mucosa mesenchymal stem cells (OM-MSCs) on brain injury. Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) models were established in rats by injecting autologous blood. SENP1 expression was enhanced in neurons but decreased in astrocytes compared to that in OM-MSCs. Overexpression of SENP1 promoted the proliferation and neuronal differentiation, while inhibiting the astrocytic differentiation of OM-MSCs. Conversely, its knockdown had the opposite effect. Moreover, OM-MSCs reduced neurological dysfunction in rats after ICH, and the neuroprot

A switch in the pathway of TRPC3-mediated calcium influx into brain pericytes contributes to capillary spasms after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Calcium influx and subsequent elevation of the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) induce contractions of brain pericytes and capillary spasms following subarachnoid hemorrhage. This calcium influx is exerted through cation channels. However, the specific calcium influx pathways in brain pericytes after subarachnoid hemorrhage remain unknown. Transient receptor potential canonical 3 (TRPC3) is the most abundant cation channel potentially involved in calcium influx into brain pericytes and is involved in calcium influx into other cell types either via store-operated calcium entry (SOC
