Ring hemorrhages are characteristic ring-shaped lesions in the parenchyma of the central nervous system (CNS) surrounding small blood vessels and are typically reported to occur in white matter of the brain. In humans, they are seen in various diseases, including pernicious anemia, cerebral fat embolism, and cerebral malaria. Ring hemorrhages are also sporadically seen in the CNS of animals and have been previously reported in 4 nonhuman primate (NHP) species with various forms of anemia. Here we present the results of 4 preclinical toxicity studies testing 4 drug candidates of different modal

BACKGROUND: Cerebral proliferative angiopathy (CPA) is a rare vascular disease characterized by nonfocal angiogenic activity. Numerous case reports have been published; however, despite there are a few reported cases of infratentorial CPA (or cerebellar proliferative angiopathy), no comprehensive review of this condition has been conducted.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report two cases of infratentorial CPA, and both of them presented intracranial hemorrhage. The first case was a 48-year-old woman with an incidentally detected vascular abnormality in the cerebellum, which remained stable for 11 years

BACKGROUND: Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare congenital vascular anomalies, often presenting with intracranial hemorrhage or seizures. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a distinct neurological condition characterized by vasogenic edema, primarily affecting posterior brain regions and typically associated with hypertensive crises, eclampsia, or immunosuppressive therapies. However, its occurrence following neurosurgical interventions is exceptionally rare. This case report documents the first instance of PRES following the resection of a Spetzler-Martin

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral microbleeds (MBs) are associated with sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Down syndrome with AD (DSAD). Higher MB iron may cause iron-mediated lipid peroxidation. We hypothesize that amyloid deposition is linked to MB iron and that amyloid precursor protein (APP) triplication increases iron load and lipid peroxidation.
METHODS: Prefrontal cortex and cerebellum of cognitively normal control (CTL), AD, and DSAD ApoE3,3 carriers were examined for proteins that mediated iron metabolism, antioxidant response, and amyloid processing in lipid rafts.
RESULTS: Iron was twofol

Introduction A number of studies have been conducted worldwide comparing postmortem CT with autopsy findings, highlighting the significance of each. However, the question arises: in countries where such facilities are not available, can diagnostic antemortem CT, performed during treatment, be used as an adjunct to autopsy? This study was carried out to compare antemortem CT scan and autopsy findings of intracranial haemorrhages in cases of fatal head injuries. Materials and methods The study comprised a total of 55 cases of fatal head injuries that were brought for medico-legal postmortem exam

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is an important component of the neuropathology of adult Down syndrome (DS); however, there is a paucity of its systematic in-depth analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven adult DS cases were analyzed for the presence, type, severity (Vonsattel grade), extension (Love grade), and advancement (Thal stage) of CAA using amyloid-beta immunohistochemistry. Hemorrhagic and iron pathologies were assessed by Perls staining, with double-stainings for co-localization. Descriptive/associative analyses were performed.
RESULTS: 10/11 cases had CAA (DS-CAA),

Brain metastases (BMs) from bronchopulmonary tumors are a major cause of morbidity and mortality and significantly reduce the quality of life in oncology patients. Their treatment depends on imaging features (size, number, location) and their genetic mutation subtype, small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) or non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In patients with SCLC, prophylactic whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) with hippocampal sparing (HS) is recommended, whereas in patients with NSCLC, systemic targeted therapy is preferred. Multiple studies have analyzed the MRI morphology of BMs from both SCLC and

Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome is characterized by severe headaches and diffuse, segmental constriction of cerebral arteries. We report a rare pediatric case of triptan-induced reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, complicated by both subarachnoid hemorrhage and cerebral infarction. A 10-year-old boy presented with persistent severe headaches initially suspected to be migraines, for which he was prescribed rizatriptan. Five days after starting rizatriptan, he developed impaired consciousness (Japan Coma Scale 10) and partial right-sided hemiparesis, prompting emergency

Congenital hypofibrinogenemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by significantly reduced plasma fibrinogen levels and a predisposition to bleeding. Paradoxically, affected individuals also face an increased risk of thrombotic events. However, simultaneous involvement of both the cerebellum and spinal cord due to ischemic strokes is exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman with a known history of congenital hypofibrinogenemia and prior cerebral hemorrhage, who presented with sudden-onset numbness in all four limbs, rapidly progressing to tetraplegia and sen

Primary central nervous system (CNS) malignant melanoma is a rare occurrence that can mimic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) on imaging. We present the case of a patient with primary CNS melanoma presenting as an SAH. A 46-year-old man presented with a 2-week history of subacute thunderclap headaches, blurred vision in the left eye, bilateral hearing impairment, and recent weight loss of 10 kg in a year. Noncontrast head computed tomography scan revealed several spotting hyper-attenuations in the brainstem. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head showed hyper-intensity on the T1 sequence with lept

Background: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) represents a progressive cerebrovascular disorder, characterized by aberrant accumulation of beta-amyloid isoforms in cortical and leptomeningeal vessel walls of cerebrum and cerebellum. Methods: We sought to investigate the clinical manifestations, current different diagnostic tools, various therapeutic strategies and most uncommon subtypes of the disease. Results: The vast majority of CAA remains sporadic, with increasing prevalence with age and very frequent coexistence with Alzheimer's disease. Clinically, CAA can present with spontaneous lobar

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar hemorrhage in neonates is increasingly being identified but is still underdiagnosed. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the optimal imaging modality for cerebellar hemorrhage evaluation, ultrasonography (US) is commonly used for screening. Characterizing the patterns and distribution of cerebellar hemorrhage lesions can help facilitate its detection by aiding to focus on prevailing type of cerebellar hemorrhage.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the patterns of cerebellar hemorrhage in neonates, comparing US findings with MRI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This wa

An adult patient was admitted to our emergency department for a first episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a temporal intracranial hemorrhage and parenchymal edema caused by a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF), whose angioarchitecture was better understood through the DSA which showed as intriguing and rare vascular anomaly the origin of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) from the middle meningeal artery (MMA). The endovascular treatment of the DAVF was then successfully performed. This case describes the first

INTRODUCTION: While cerebral amyloid angiopathy is likely responsible for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) occurring in superficial (grey matter, vermis) cerebellar locations, it is unclear whether hypertensive arteriopathy (HA), the other major cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), is associated with cerebellar ICH (cICH) in deep (white matter, deep nuclei, cerebellar peduncle) regions. We tested the hypothesis that HA-associated neuroimaging markers are significantly associated with deep cICH compared to superficial cICH.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Brain MRI scans from consecutive non-traumatic cI

Supernumerary phantom limb (SPL) is an awareness of an illusory extra limb in addition to the existing limbs. This illusion can be disturbing if unrecognised. SPL due to cerebral lesions is rare but occurs in various neurological disorders, mostly right hemispheric stroke. Detailed symptom examination is crucial as SPL may be under-reported and overlooked during the acute stroke phase. This case report describes SPL without phantom limb pain after a pontine haemorrhage, and pain absence may delay SPL identification. A female patient in her mid-40s was admitted after a median pontine haemorrhag

OBJECTIVE: Impaired cognition is a frequent complication of prematurity, closely related to patients' outcomes. Imaging features of cerebellar hemorrhages (CBH) related to impaired cognition are not well studied. This study evaluated the relationship between cMRI-derived CBH characteristics and clinical risk factors for adverse cognition.
METHODS: Our analysis is threefold: (1) We included very preterm infants (2009-2018) undergoing cMRI, and compared clinical and cMRI findings between infants with and without CBH. (2) In the CBH cohort, we associated clinical and imaging findings with cognit

Ruptured aneurysms or pseudoaneurysms associated with the vasa corona, in the absence of cerebral arteriovenous malformation or dural arteriovenous fistula, are extremely rare but should be recognized as a possible cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We report the case of a 51-year-old female who presented with SAH due to a ruptured vasa corona pseudoaneurysm, with no associated anatomical abnormalities involving the vertebral artery or the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. She recovered after direct surgery. In previous cases, anterior spinal artery dilatation due to posterior inferio

Aneurysms of the a2 segment of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery have a high incidence of nonsacullar morphology compelling parent artery occlusion (PAO) as treatment. Well-developed leptomeningeal collaterals and bypass surgery may reduce the occurrence of ischemic complications, but if PAO was made on the segment involving the origin of the internal auditory artery, complications are challenging to avoid. Few studies have clearly described the clinical course of neurologic deficits following PAO of a2 aneurysms. We report a case which recovered from audiovestibular loss and facial pals

INTRODUCTION: Developmental venous anomaly (DVA) is a common cerebral vascular variant, typically considered benign and clinically silent. We report an exceptional case of a symptomatic infratentorial DVA in a 9-year-old child that became clinically evident after a minor head trauma.
CASE REPORT: The patient presented with neurological symptoms indicative of posterior fossa involvement, including headache, nausea, and ataxia. MRI revealed a cluster of abnormally dilated medullary veins in the right cerebellar hemisphere converging into an enlarged collector vein, consistent with a DVA. Signif

Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms are rare, constituting less than 5 % of intracranial aneurysms, and are associated with a high rupture risk [1]. Management is challenging due to proximity to brainstem structures, the need for vessel reconstruction or excision, and the risk of ischemia in PICA territory [2,3]. We present a case of subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a ruptured, dissecting ∼1 cm proximal PICA aneurysm. The aneurysm had a calcified neck, and the contralateral PICA was small and not adjacent to the ipsilateral PICA. Treatment was staged: first, partial endovasc
