[Neurological consequences of prematurity].

Premature births are an important health indicator for a country. These children have a higher risk of mortality and morbidity. The main brain injuries in preterm infants include white matter injuries, intracranial hemorrhages, and cerebellar injuries. These injuries can be detected through brain ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with MRI being the most sensitive technique. Perinatal brain injuries may have long-term consequences on the neurodevelopment of preterm infants, with an increased risk of cerebral palsy, cognitive, behavioral, sensory, and learning disorders, among oth

Use of Proximal Suboccipital Segment of Occipital Artery as Donor for Posterior Circulation Revascularization Surgery: Technical Note.

BACKGROUND: The distal suboccipital segment of the occipital artery is commonly used as a donor vessel for aneurysms of the posterior circulation requiring revascularization techniques. Isolating this segment of vessel can be challenging due to its course in and out of the various layers of the suboccipital musculature. METHODS: We describe the use of the proximal suboccipital segment of the occipital artery within the occipital groove at the lateral skull base as a donor segment for an interposition graft in revascularization surgery. We present a case detailing the use of this technique for

Short-Term Efficacy of Cerebello-spinal tDCS and Body Weight-Supported Treadmill Training in the Hypertrophic Olivary Degeneration: a Rare Case Report.

The present case study reported a patient diagnosed with hypertrophic olivary degeneration, a rare condition characterized by a trans-neuronal degeneration and signal enhancement in T2-weighted images on magnetic resonance imaging, usually caused by cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and trauma. Furthermore, the relevant literature review was performed. The existing pharmacological treatment has limited clinical benefits on the patient. Since spontaneous remission hardly occurs in the disease, there are no other effective treatments. In this case, the patient was a 55-year-old Chinese m

Disruption of Cerebellar Granular Layer as a Consequence of Germinal Matrix Intraventricular Hemorrhage in Extreme Prematurity: An Acute Direct Mechanism Too?

Cerebellum is an important brain structure for the future development of motor, cognitive, and behavioral abilities in children. This structure undergoes its most significant growth during the third trimester of pregnancy. Prematurity gathers several risk factors for cerebellar impairment and underdevelopment, and among them is ventricular dilatation following germinal matrix intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH). In this report, we illustrate how this prevalent complication associated with prematurity may induce secondary cerebellar cortical damage. A premature male born by an emergency Caesa

An autopsy case of amyloid angiopathy-related cerebellar hemorrhage.

An 80-year-old man with dementia demonstrated cerebellar hemorrhage. Autopsy revealed pathology compatible with Alzheimer's disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). CAA was more prevalent in the occipital lobe than in the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes; however, amyloid-β (Aβ)-containing senile plaques were less abundant in the occipital cortex than in the other cortices. In the cerebellum, abundant CAA-involved vessels were observed in the subarachnoid space and molecular layer and to a lesser extent in the Purkinje and granule layers. On consecutive sections, Aβ1-42 immunohistoc

Automatic brain segmentation in preterm infants with post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus using 3D Bayesian U-Net.

Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) is a severe complication of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in very preterm infants. PHH monitoring and treatment decisions rely heavily on manual and subjective two-dimensional measurements of the ventricles. Automatic and reliable three-dimensional (3D) measurements of the ventricles may provide a more accurate assessment of PHH, and lead to improved monitoring and treatment decisions. To accurately and efficiently obtain these 3D measurements, automatic segmentation of the ventricles can be explored. However, this segmentation is challenging due to the

Technical Note: Validation of the effectiveness of electric stunning for euthanasia of mature swine (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Electrocution and the use of a penetrating captive bolt gun (PCBG) are both acceptable methods of euthanasia for market weight swine. Research has demonstrated that a PCBG is effective in both growing and mature swine. Given limited to no published research base on electrocution in mature swine, the objectives of the present study were to evaluate the efficacy of a two-stage (head only followed by head to heart, 10 s contact for each) mobile electric stunner (E-STUN, Hubert HAAS TBG 96N) and to assess euthanasia outcomes when comparing E-STUN with the frontal placement of a heavy-duty PCBG (Ja

A murine model of cerebral cavernous malformations with acute hemorrhage.

Cavernomas are multi-lumen and blood-filled vascular malformations which form in the brain and the spinal cord. They lead to hemorrhage, epileptic seizures, neurological deficits, and paresthesia. An effective medical treatment is still lacking, and the available murine models for cavernomas have several limitations for preclinical studies. These include disease phenotypes that differ from human diseases, such as restriction of the lesions to the cerebellum, and absence of acute hemorrhage. Additional limitations of current murine models include rapid development of lesions, which are lethal b

Genetic analysis of a family presenting with coexisting cerebral cavernous malformations and polycystic kidney disease.

Hereditary cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are characterized by clustered dilated capillary-like vessels in the brain. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is characterized by renal cysts and extra-renal abnormalities. We report a Taiwanese family in which the index case exhibited coexisting phenotypes of both CCMs and PKD. The index case was a 55-year-old woman with known PKD who developed an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the right medulla. Neuroimaging revealed numerous microbleeds in the bilateral cerebrum and cerebellum. Radiological CCMs were suspected given the

Multimodality resection of Oliveira Type IIIC* cerebellar AVM: A distinct entity.

BACKGROUND: Posterior fossa AVMs constitute about 10% of AVMs and are associated with a higher rate of hemorrhage and increased morbidity and mortality rates necessitating treatment with rare exception. Cerebellar AVMs differ markedly from their supratentorial counterparts in that there are no perforating vessels involvement, drainage into the deep cerebral venous system, or presence of eloquent functional area except for the dentate nucleus. While Yaşargil has classified cerebellar AVMs into seven subtypes according to their location, de Oliveira et al. have classified them using a more impac

R558C NOTCH3 Mutation in a CADASIL Patient with Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Case Report with Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a monogenic cerebral small-vessel disease, which is characterized by migraine, recurrent ischemic strokes, psychiatric disorder, progressive cognitive decline, and occasionally intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). ICH events have been reported in a high proportion of East Asian CADASIL patients with R544C mutation in exon 11 of NOTCH3; however, whether any other specific NOTCH3 mutation determines the ICH phenotype has yet to be explored. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 60

Hemodynamic alterations following a cerebellar arteriovenous malformation resection: Case report and densitometric quantitative analysis from CT imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar arteriovenous malformations (cAVMs) are rare and challenging lesions with an aggressive natural history. The mechanisms whereby a patient can worsen clinically after a supratentorial AVM resection include an acute alteration in cerebral hemodynamics, which is a known cause of postoperative hyperemia, edema and/or hemorrhage. These phenomena has not been described for cAVMS. Moreover, the underlying pathophysiology of edema and hemorrhage after AVM resection still remains controversial. METHODS: We report a patient that presented an abrupt neurological deterioration afte

Targeted detection and repair of a spinal dural defect associated with successful biochemical resolution of subarachnoid bleeding in classical infratentorial superficial siderosis.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE  : Classical infratentorial superficial siderosis (iSS) is characterised by repeated insidious bleeding into the subarachnoid space, leading to haemosiderin deposition within the subpial layers of the brainstem, cerebellum and spinal cord, sometimes with supratentorial involvement. Although nearly always associated with a dural defect (usually from previous trauma or neurosurgery) there is little evidence to support definitive investigation and management strategies. Here, we present a novel investigation strategy to identify a dural defect and subsequent successful s

Changes in the Brain Metabolism Associated with Central Post-Stroke Pain in Hemorrhagic Pontine Stroke: An 18F-FDG-PET Study of the Brain.

Central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is an intractable neuropathic pain that can occur following central nervous system injuries. Spino-thalamo-cortical pathway damage contributes to CPSP development. However, brain regions involved in CPSP are unknown and previous studies were limited to supratentorial strokes with cortical lesion involvement. We analyzed the brain metabolism changes associated with CPSP following pontine hemorrhage. Thirty-two patients with isolated pontine hemorrhage were examined; 14 had CPSP, while 18 did not. Brain glucose metabolism was evaluated using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose
