[Stroke incidence in Asturias, 1990-1991].

BACKGROUND: Stroke, with a rate of 121/100,000 was the second cause of death in Asturias, Spain. Here we communicate the results of a population based stroke register in the oriental health districts of Asturias. METHOD: The study took place between October 1, 1990 and May 30, 1991, covering a population of 652,549. Surveillance was both active and passive and included the public and private hospitals, and the primary health care. Death certificates could not be checked due to legal reasons. We defined case following the WHO criteria. RESULTS: During the eight months of study 708 case occurr

Stroke registry in Malmö, Sweden.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A stroke registry covering the city of Malmö, Sweden (population 232,000) was started in January of 1989 to prospectively follow up stroke incidence, recurrence, and fatality rates. METHODS: Patients with presumed stroke were interviewed within 1 week after admission to the hospital, and their medical records were examined. Continuous validation against hospital diagnosis showed well over 90% of all stroke cases in Malmö to have been included. RESULTS: Incidence rates per 100,000 residents were 300 for all stroke events and 225 for first-ever stroke, lower than those

Stroke incidence rates were unchanged, while fatality rates declined, during 1971-1987 in Göteborg, Sweden.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke risk factors have been shown to change with time in several places; simultaneously, stroke incidence rates have increased in some and decreased in other places. In Göteborg, Sweden, cardiovascular epidemiological research has included stroke registration since 1971. From these data on stroke, incidence and fatality rates from a 17-year period are given. METHODS: During the period 1971-1987 all cases of stroke occurring in people aged 15-65 years in the city of Göteborg were uniformly recorded, with an estimated case detection rate of 90% or more. RESULTS: Age-a

Stroke in a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia: a study of 372 cases.

Epidemiological studies have shown a consistent downward trend in the incidence and mortality of stroke in industrialized communities. There are however no reports on the pattern of stroke in Saudi nationals and expatriates in Saudi Arabia. The types and etiologies in 372 subjects (262 Saudis, 110 non-Saudis) are described. Males outnumbered females in the ratios of 2.2:1 and 8.2:1 for Saudis and non-Saudis, respectively. The frequency of stroke increased steadily with age until the 7th decade in Saudis but dropped sharply after the 6th in expatriates. The frequency of stroke types in Saudis w

Pattern and ethnic variations in stroke in Saudi Arabia.

We report our observations in 427 stroke patients (305 Saudis, 122 non-Saudis with an age range of 14 months to 85 years) seen in a tertiary hospital in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia over an 8-year period. Of these patients, 115 (27%) were between 18 and 45 years old, and constituted the "young stroke patients" for this study. The hospital frequency for the young was 5/10,000 inpatients. In general, there was a male preponderance, with a male:female ratio of 2.2:1 and 7:1 for Saudis and non-Saudis, respectively. Ischemic stroke (55%) was more frequent than hemorrhagic stroke (25%), and

[A population-based study of the proportion by type of stroke determined by computed tomography scan].

To investigate the proportion by type of stroke in communities, a stroke surveillance was conducted in three rural populations between 1979 and 1987. Among 411 stroke patients aged 40 and over determined by the modified Millikan's stroke criteria, the type of stroke was analyzed using computed tomography (CT) criteria for 273 patients who were examined by CT. 1. Incidence rates of stroke determined by the modified Millikan's criteria did not vary among the three populations in all age-sex groups except for men aged 60-69. 2. The proportion of stroke patients who had CT examinations was 84-88%

Risk factors for stroke in middle-aged men in Göteborg, Sweden.

To evaluate stroke risk factors in Göteborg, Sweden, during 1970-1973 a cohort of 7,495 participating men from a general population sample of 9,998 men aged 47-55 years were examined with respect to cardiovascular risk factors. Men with hypertension and hypercholesterolemia and men who were heavy smokers were treated. We assessed stroke end points and cause-specific mortality using a stroke register and death certificates. During a mean follow-up of 11.8 years, 230 strokes occurred in the entire population sample (participants and nonparticipants) (7% subarachnoid hemorrhages, 13% intracerebra

Accuracy of diagnosis on death certificates for underlying causes of death in a long-term autopsy-based population study in Hisayama, Japan; with special reference to cardiovascular diseases.

Major categorical diagnosis by International Classification of Diseases and type-specific diagnosis for cardiovascular diseases in death certificates were compared to the diagnosis made at autopsy in 864 consecutive autopsy cases aged 20 or over, among the Japanese residents in Hisayama town. Cerebral stroke was correctly diagnosed in 84%, malignant neoplasms in 78% and cardiac disease in 66%. Cerebral stroke and cardiac disease tended to be overdiagnosed, while malignant neoplasms were underdiagnosed. The validation of certified diagnosis was less reliable in the aged population, and in type-

Anticoagulant-related intracerebral hemorrhage.

Twenty-four patients had intracerebral hemorrhage while they were being treated with anticoagulants. Hypertension was present in 67% of the cases, head trauma was an uncommon preceding event, and simultaneous bleeding in other organs occurred in only one instance. Neurologic abnormalities progressed for several hours in 58%. Seizures occurred at onset in 12.5%. The location of the hemorrhage was as follows: cerebellum (nine cases), lobar white matter (six), basal ganglia (five), thalamus (two), and hemisphere, unspecified (two). In 61%, the hemorrhages occurred within 6 months of therapy. In 7

Patterns of incidence and trends in diagnostic classification of cerebrovascular disease in Washington County, Maryland, 1969-1971 to 1974-1976.

A study was conducted to provide baseline data on patterns of cerebrovascular disease incidence in the community of Washington County, Maryland, over two time intervals--1969-1971 and 1974-1976--and to evaluate any temporal trends with regard to their possible relation to reported declines in stroke death rates. Among the statistically significant changes in incidence between 1969-1971 and 1974-1976 were a decline in the rate of cerebral thrombosis and a concomitant increase in frequency of cerebrovascular disease-unspecified, most likely a reflection of a change in diagnostic terminology. Stroke registration in Göteborg, Sweden, 1970-75. Incidence and fatality rates.

Strokes occurring among persons between 15 and 65 years of age (population 300 000) have been registered since 1970 in Göteborg, Sweden. Control of the validity showed that less than 10% of all cases of stroke were undetected. During the period Nov. 15, 1970-May 14, 1975, 986 stroke events occurred in 941 patients, giving an annual average incidence rate of 73 (89 for men and 58 for women) per 100 000 individuals 15-65 years of age. The incidence for all ages was estimated to be about 200/100 000. The rates were higher for men than for women in all age groups. There was a female preponderance

Cerebral thrombosis, cerebral haemorrhage, and ABO blood-groups.

The ABO blood-group distributions of 1460 patients who had died from a stroke were compared with those of a control group of 20 705 controls selected at random from the healthy population at risk (i.e., over thirty-five years of age and matched for age and sex ratio). The cause of death was certified as cerebral thrombosis in 329 cases and as cerebral haemorrhage in 482 cases, these diagnoses being established in neurological hospitals; the remaining 649 cases had an unspecified type of stroke, the diagnosis being made by general practitioners. In the group with unspecified type of stroke the
