BACKGROUND: Subdural hematoma (SDH) is considered spontaneous in the absence of trauma history. It is a common presentation in the geriatric age group due to the many influential factors. Most cases have a known underlying etiology that explains the incidence, otherwise, they are considered idiopathic. We present a rare case report of idiopathic nontraumatic bilateral SDH with a literature review of similar cases.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 28-year-old fit individual presented to the Emergency Department with a chronic history of severe headache and neck pain, associated with behavioral changes in t

INTRODUCTION: Cancer may increase the risk of bleeding. However, whether subdural hematoma is a marker of occult cancer remains unknown. We examined the association between non-traumatic subdural hematoma and cancer risk in a cohort study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using Danish nationwide health registries, we identified 2713 patients with non-traumatic subdural hematoma and no previous cancer diagnosis, who were hospitalized between April 1, 1996 and December 31, 2019. We computed age-, sex-, and calendar year-standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) as the ratio of the observed to expected number

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Surgical evacuation is the standard treatment for chronic subdural hematomas (CSDHs) but is associated with a high risk of recurrence and readmission. Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) is a novel treatment approach which could be performed upfront or in adjunction to surgical evacuation. MMAE studies are limited by small sample sizes. This study aimed to describe and compare outcomes of MMAE in adjunction to surgery with those of surgery alone on a national level.
METHODS: The national Vizient Clinical Database was queried by use of a specific validated se

Non-traumatic acute subdural hematoma (SDH) in patients with scleroderma is infrequently described in literature reviewing the neurologic disorders in scleroderma. We report a case of a patient with scleroderma complicated by severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and a history of pulmonary embolism on warfarin who developed an SDH, requiring hemicraniectomy after initiating therapy with IV epoprostenol. The proposed mechanisms for SDH development and management strategy are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) without cortical venous reflux (CVR) has a relatively benign course. Here, the authors describe a patient presenting with subdural hematoma due to a middle meningeal AVF without CVR.
OBSERVATIONS: A 17-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department with acute headache without an episode of head trauma. Computed tomography demonstrated a left acute subdural hematoma (SDH). Because the nontraumatic SDH raised the suspicion of vascular pathology, emergent angiography was performed, which demonstrated an AVF fed by the middle meningeal artery

BACKGROUND: The original treatment may aggravate when hemodialysis (HD) patients have nontraumatic subdural hematoma (NSDH). End-stage kidney disease patients are at increased risk for NSDH, but its risk factors and outcomes are not sufficiently explored at present.
METHODS: Electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched by using various combinations of the keywords "Hemodialysis," "Renal Insufficiency," "Extracorporeal Dialysis," "Subdural Hematoma," "Subdural Hemorrhage," "Subdural Hematomas," and "Subdural Hemorrhages" in accordance with the PRISMA guideli

BACKGROUND: The International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD) classifies subdural hematoma (SDH) as traumatic or non-traumatic. In clinical settings, however, SDH is typically described as either acute or chronic.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess how the ICD Coding Tools captures the clinical terminology and propose an improved classification that would increase the system's usefulness in administrative, statistical and research applications.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who presented to our center with an ICD diagnostic code for eith

Diagnosis and treatment of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVT) associated with subdural hematoma (SDH) is challenging with an increased risk of rebleeding on using anticoagulation. There are no guidelines at present due to its rare presentation. In this report we describe three patients who presented with non-traumatic SDH and CVT over the last 3 years. Clinical assessment, investigations including neuroimaging, and management were reviewed both at time of admission and follow-up. These patients presented with varied CVT syndromes -isolated raised intracranial pressure (ICP), focal and diff

INTRODUCTION: Researchers apply varying definitions when measuring stroke incidence using administrative data. We aimed to investigate the sensitivity of incidence estimates to varying definitions of stroke and lookback periods and to provide updated incidence rates and trends for Western Australia (WA).
METHODS: We used linked state-wide hospital and death data from 1985 to 2017 to identify incident strokes from 2005 to 2017. A standard definition was applied which included strokes coded as the principal hospital diagnosis or the underlying cause of death, with a 10-year lookback used to cle

BACKGROUND: Patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) related to cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) are at increased risk of developing epilepsy and cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and vascular dementia. In a retrospective cohort observation study of patients hospitalized for ICH with CAA versus ICH without CAA, we evaluated the prevalence of neurological comorbidities at admission and the risk of new diagnosis of epilepsy, relevant cognitive disorders, and mortality at 1 year.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cerebrovascular disease in sexual and gender minority (SGM) people remains poorly understood. Our primary objective was to describe the epidemiology and outcomes in a sample of SGM people with stroke. As a secondary objective, we compared this group with non-SGM people with stroke to assess for significant differences in risk factors or outcomes.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review study of SGM people admitted to an urban stroke center with primary diagnosis of stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic). We evaluated stroke epidemiology and outcomes, summarizing wi

INTRODUCTION: A common risk factor of chronic, nontraumatic subdural hematoma (SDH) is anticoagulation therapy. Anticoagulation is generally held in patients who develop SDH, but this can lead to thromboembolic events. While prior studies have reported the clinical outcomes of patients with anticoagulation-related SDH, there remains little evidence regarding ongoing anticoagulation treatment.
CASE REPORT: We report the management of 2 patients who developed anticoagulation-related SDH and underwent middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization and successful reinitiation of anticoagulation thera

A 90-year-old, non-hypertensive woman presented gait disturbance followed by falls. She had developed a lacunar infarction in the right frontal lobe 1 month previously that subsequently resulted in subtle motor weakness in the left lower extremity. At presentation, the patient showed motor weakness in the left upper and lower extremities with normal findings on blood test. Cranial computed tomography (CT) revealed a subcortical hemorrhage in the anterior part of the right frontal lobe that was accompanied by perilesional edema. In addition, two small subdural hematomas, apparently in the acute

Bilaterally fixed and dilated pupils (BFDP) in traumatic acute subdural haematoma (ASDH) patients represent an ominous sign that portends irreversible brainstem injury and death. Whether patients with spontaneous ASDH and BFDP follow similar outcomes is unknown. We present a mid-60s man, found unconscious, with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 4 following 8 days of headaches. Emergency CT imaging demonstrated a large right ASDH and the patient exhibited BFDP for >3 hours despite sedation and mannitol. Neurological improvement and spontaneously reduced SDH thickness were observed 10 hours postadmi
