Postpolio Syndrome from Non-paralytic Poliovirus Infection.

A 73-year-old man presented with muscle weakness and atrophy of his right arm. Atrophy of his left brachia and left calf had occurred 13 years before without any improvement or deterioration. His sister and cousin had a history of paralytic poliomyelitis. Serum poliovirus type 2 neutralizing antibody was elevated to 128×. Electromyography revealed chronic denervation potentials not only in the muscles affected previously but also in the unaffected muscles. Acute and chronic denervation potentials were found in the newly affected muscle. Postpolio syndrome should be considered in patients with

Post-polio syndrome. Cases report and review of literature.

It is estimated that around 15 million people survived polio infection worldwide since early twentieth century. In 1950 effective vaccination was used for first time. Since that time number of affected people decreased. The last epidemic of Haine-Medine disease in Poland was in 1950s. Another rare cases of infections were observed till 1970s. About at least 15 years after polio virus infection, slowly progressive muscle limbs paresis with muscle atrophy, joints pain, paresthesia were observed in polio survivors. That constellation of symptoms was called post-polio syndrome (PPS). PPS frequency

The role of supplementary environmental surveillance to complement acute flaccid paralysis surveillance for wild poliovirus in Pakistan - 2011-2013.

BACKGROUND: More than 99% of poliovirus infections are non-paralytic and therefore, not detected by acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance. Environmental surveillance (ES) can detect circulating polioviruses from sewage without relying on clinical presentation. With extensive ES and continued circulation of polioviruses, Pakistan presents a unique opportunity to quantify the impact of ES as a supplement to AFP surveillance on overall completeness and timeliness of poliovirus detection. METHODS: Genetic, geographic and temporal data were obtained for all wild poliovirus (WPV) isolates dete

Long-term socio-economic consequences and health care costs of poliomyelitis: a historical cohort study involving 3606 polio patients.

Worldwide 10-20 million individuals are living with disabilities after acute poliomyelitis. However, very little is known about the socio-economic consequences and health care costs of poliomyelitis. We carried out a historical register-based study including 3606 individuals hospitalised for poliomyelitis in Copenhagen, Denmark 1940-1954, and 13,795 age and gender-matched Danes. Participants were followed from 1980 until 2012, and family, socio-economic conditions and health care costs were evaluated in different age groups using chi-squared tests, boot-strapped t tests or hazard ratios (HR) c

[Post-polio syndrome. Part I. The "legacy" of forgotten disease, challenges for professionals and polio survivors].

The outcome of paralytic polio was believed to be a stable neurological state. Now, it is established that polio has an additional, slowly progressive phase, called post-polio syndrome (PPS) that develops 30-40 years after the acute poliomyelitis in 25-80% of paralytic and about 40% of nonparalytic polio survivors. The clinical symptoms are nonspecific and usually include muscle weakness, fatigue and muscle or joint pain. Some patients suffer from muscular atrophy, respiratory insufficiency, dysphagia, sleep disturbances or cold intolerance. The etiopathogenesis of PPS is unclear and many fact

Polio survivors--well educated and hard working.

243 patients were diagnosed with acute poliomyelitis (polio) in Western Norway between 1950 and 1954; 186 were paralytic and 57 non-paralytic. This study examines how polio influenced their education, employment, profession, annual income, marital status and energy for leisure activities. 149 of the patients identified were alive and 98 of the matched controls responded to a questionnaire. Education length did not differ between acute paralytic polio patients, acute non-paralytic polio patients and controls. Fifty percent of the patients with residual weakness and 77 % of the patients with nor

Paralytic vs. "nonparalytic" polio: distinction without a difference?

Nonparalytic polio (NPP) is commonly thought to be synonymous with "abortive polio," in which the poliovirus neither entered the central nervous system nor damaged neurons. Described are two epidemic illness-"The Summer Grippe" and Iceland disease-apparently caused by a low virulence but neuropathic type 2 poliovirus. Studies show that neuronal lesions in the brain and spinal cord and muscle weakness were common in NPP, and epidemiologic studies document late-onset weakness and fatigue in 14% to 42% of NPP survivors. These findings indicate that clinicians should not require a history of paral

Risk of symptoms related to late effects of poliomyelitis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the risk of developing symptoms related to late effects of poliomyelitis between polio patients and persons of similar age and sex without history of poliomyelitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study comprised information on 148 patients with prior poliomyelitis and 115 persons with no history of poliomyelitis. Information was obtained by questionnaire and analyzed by multiple logistic regression method. RESULTS: The risk of experiencing two or more symptoms was significantly higher among the polio patients than among the persons without history of poliomyelitis. The eleva

Poliomyelitis in India: past, present and future.

In that they were made in temperate countries, most of the studies on poliomyelitis may not apply in sub-continent of endemic infantile paralysis. This review brings together data on polio in India, to present any changes which may have occurred since 1940. Only about 2% of children with polio die in the acute illness; about 95% of all cases have paralysis of one or both legs. In lameness surveys the adjustments for deaths and for arm paralysis are unnecessary and inflate the prevalence. Surveys suggest that prevalence has risen, but there may be other explanations for the figures. Around sent

Paralysis caused by acute myelitis in Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus strain GD VII infection is induced by CD4+ lymphocytes infiltrating the spinal cord.

Intravenous infection by Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus strain GD VII causes acute encephalomyelitis and paralysis in infected mice. However, nude mice and cyclophosphamide-treated ddY mice did not show paralysis when they were able to survive until day 20 post-infection (p.i.). Of ddY mice infected with 5 x 10(7) p.f.u./mouse, 70-80% showed symptoms of paralysis on day 20 p.i. The viral titres in the brain and spinal cord in infected mice were not significantly different between paralytic and non-paralytic mice. In all of the mice infected with the virus, CD4+ lymphocytes and CD8+ l

Unnecessary injections and paralytic poliomyelitis in India.

The effect of prior injections on the pattern and severity of paralytic poliomyelitis has been examined by a retrospective analysis of case notes from an outpatient pediatric clinic in South India. Of 262 children with acute polio, 176 had received unnecessary injections < 48 h before paralysis and 12 had received diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus or provocative injections. Two children injected in the right arm had paralysis in that limb only. Children with no injections (controls) had an equal chance of paralysis (0.73) in each left and right leg. Children with injections in the right or left glu

Ultrastructural and immunofluorescent studies of acute and chronic lactate dehydrogenase elevating virus-induced nonparalytic poliomyelitis in mice.

Light microscopic, electron microscopic, and immunofluorescent studies have been performed on young C58/J mice following administration of cyclophosphamide and peripheral inoculation of the C strain of lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV-C). Using special fixation techniques, all three types of studies were performed on the spinal cord tissues obtained from the same mice. LDV-C infection-specific immunofluorescence was detected in anterior horn neurons. Ultrastructurally, anterior horn neurons during the acute inflammatory phase of the disease were characterized by various degrees of ch

The intracellular localization of poliomyelitis virus.

A study was made of the intracellular localization of Type 2 poliomyelitis virus, using the technique of Mirsky and Pollister (23) for cellular fractionation. After isotonic saline homogenization of central nervous system tissue from infected mice, and subsequent centrifugation of the suspension, the virus present in the supernatant fluid was held to be of cytoplasmic origin. Upon serial washings of the sediment with physiological saline, the resulting supernates contained progressively less virus until by the seventh washing, virtually none was present. At this point extraction of the washed

Levels of homotypic neutralizing antibody in human poliomyelitis three years after infection.

Quantitative neutralization tests in monkeys were carried out on sera obtained from 7 patients, 3 months, and 3 years after an attack of poliomyelitis. The serum specimens were tested against 100 to 1000 PD(50) of the patient's own strain of virus, recovered during the acute phase of the illness; all the strains were Type 1. The 6 patients, aged 6 months to 13 years, who had a paralytic attack of the disease, all exhibited very high levels of neutralizing antibody at 3 years as well as at 3 months after onset. The 50 per cent serum dilution titers ranged from about 1:180 to at least 1:860. Sin

An epidemic of paralytic poliomyelitis characterized by dual infections with poliomyelitis and Coxsackie viruses.

The first known epidemic of poliomyelitis in Easton, Pennsylvania, occurred in 1949, and was unusual in the high proportion of paralytic to non-paralytic cases. Both poliomyelitis and Cosxackie, or C, viruses were isolated from more than half the patients studied during the acute stage of the disease. One month later C virus was only occasionally recovered. Classification of the 28 strains of C virus which were isolated revealed that 24 belonged to one antigenic type, Easton-2 (related to Albany type 1 virus). Patients from whom C virus was isolated showed a rise during convalescence to the Ea

Antibody response of patients with poliomyelitis to virus recovered from their own alimentary tract.

Of 20 strains of virus recovered from 40 patients with poliomyelitis only 9 possessed a titer of 10(-3) or more, permitting significant quantitative neutralization tests in monkeys. Seven of the 9 high titer strains were derived from patients whose illness was ultimately paralytic, and tests with their undiluted sera indicated that the acute phase as well as the 3 month convalescent specimens neutralized maximum amounts of the patient's own virus. However when varying dilutions of the sera were tested against a single dose of virus, it was found that the antibody was present in lowest concentr
