Prior COVID-19 vaccination and reduced risk of cerebrovascular diseases among COVID-19 survivors.

The effects of COVID-19 vaccination on short-term and long-term cerebrovascular risks among COVID-19 survivors remained unknown. We conducted a national multi-center retrospective cohort study with 151 597 vaccinated and 151 597 unvaccinated COVID-19 patients using the TriNetX database, from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2023. Patients baseline characteristics were balanced with propensity score matching (PSM). The outcomes were incident cerebrovascular diseases occurred between 1st and 30th days (short-term) after COVID-19 diagnosis. Nine subgroup analyses were conducted to explore potentia

Application of Machine Learning Methods for Epilepsy Risk Ranking in Patients with Hematopoietic Malignancies Using.

Machine learning methods to predict the risk of epilepsy, including vascular epilepsy, in oncohematological patients are currently considered promising. These methods are used in research to predict pharmacoresistant epilepsy and surgical treatment outcomes in order to determine the epileptogenic zone and functional neural systems in patients with epilepsy, as well as to develop new approaches to classification and perform other tasks. This paper presents the results of applying machine learning to analyzing data and developing diagnostic models of epilepsy in oncohematological and cardiovascu

Validity of cerebrovascular ICD-9-CM codes in healthcare administrative databases. The Umbria Data-Value Project.

BACKGROUND: Validation of administrative databases for cerebrovascular diseases is crucial for epidemiological, outcome, and health services research. The aim of this study was to validate ICD-9 codes for hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke in administrative databases, to use them for a comprehensive assessment of the burden of disease in terms of major outcomes, such as mortality, hospital readmissions, and use of healthcare resources. METHODS: We considered the hospital discharge abstract database of the Umbria Region (890,000 residents). Source population was represented by patients aged >18 di

Non-cancer mortality in workers in the meat and delicatessen departments of supermarkets (1950-2006).

We studied non-cancer mortality in 10,701 workers in the meat and delicatessen departments of supermarkets because they have increased exposure to a variety of microorganisms that infect and cause disease in food animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep, and poultry, to which subjects in the general population are also exposed, albeit to a lesser degree. These workers were also exposed to fumes from the wrapping machine. Standardized mortality ratios were estimated in the cohort as a whole and in race/sex subgroups, using the US population for comparison. Study subjects were followed up from Januar

Trends in the in-hospital stroke rate following carotid endarterectomy in California and Maryland.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the outcome of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in the state of Maryland during the last decade to identify any trends in the incidence of in-hospital stroke and mortality and compared these results with the outcome of the operation throughout the state of California as a control population. METHOD: We performed a retrospective analysis of 10 years (1994 to 2003) of the Maryland and 5 years (1999 to 2003) of the California hospital discharge databases. The following patients were included in the analysis: (1) International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical

A preliminary clinical scale to predict the risk of in-hospital death after carotid endarterectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) remains the gold standard for the treatment of carotid disease, with mortality rates generally at 0.4% to 1.7%. Controversy remains with regards to its role in the treatment of the high-risk surgical population. We developed a new clinical scale incorporating weighted risk factors into a single numerical score that correlates with the risk of in-hospital death after CEA. We propose that this tool may serve to prospectively identify the high-risk patient. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 10 years (1994 to 2003) of the Maryland hospital d

Accuracy of ICD-9-CM coding for the identification of patients with acute ischemic stroke: effect of modifier codes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Discharge ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification) codes have been used to identify patients with acute stroke for epidemiological, quality of care, and cost studies. The aim of this study was to determine if the accuracy of the primary ICD-9-CM codes for ischemic stroke is improved by modifier codes and how specific codes reflect stroke subtype diagnoses. METHODS: Available hospital charts for all patients discharged from a single hospital between May 1995 and June 1997 with ICD-9-CM codes 433 (occlusion and stenosis of

[Doppler ultrasound of precerebral arteries. A retrospective study of referral routines and findings].

This study reports the activities of the cerebrovascular laboratory at Ullevål hospital in 1990. 713 patients (332 men and 381 women; mean age 60 years) were examined with pulsed Doppler ultrasound. Pathological findings were detected in 202 patients (28%). Among these, 43 patients (6%) had stenosis in the internal carotid artery < 70%, 31 patients (4.3%) stenosis > or = 70% and 30 patients (4.2%) had occluded internal carotid artery. 48 patients (6.7%) had stenosis of the external carotid artery. Subclavian steal was detected in 16 patients (2.2%), stenosis in the subclavian artery without st
