Rising mortality in cerebral atherosclerosis-related deaths in the United States (1999-2020): a 21-year retrospective analysis of CDC-WONDER database.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral Atherosclerosis-related mortality remains a major public health issue. This study analyzes trends in age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) for cerebral atherosclerosis deaths in the United States from 1999 to 2020. METHODS: Mortality data from 1999 to 2020 for adults aged 25 years and older were analyzed. AAMRs were calculated, and trends were examined for the overall population, as well as by gender, urban-rural areas, race/ethnicity, and census region. Annual percentage changes (APC) were calculated to assess mortality trends. RESULTS: A total of 146 016 deaths were reco

Causal relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and atherosclerosis: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Employing a bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach, this study endeavors to assess the potential causal relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and atherosclerosis (AS). Single nucleotide polymorphism loci, associated with ADHD at a significant threshold (P < 5 × 10-8), were meticulously screened from genome-wide association studies datasets to serve as instrumental variables. The primary outcomes under investigation encompass AS, coronary atherosclerosis, and cerebral atherosclerosis. Employing inverse variance weighted method (IVW), MR-Egger

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome in Chronic Kidney Disease: Incidence, Outcomes, and Risk Factors in a National Cohort.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is an acute neurological condition that, if untreated, can result in severe complications, such as intracerebral hemorrhage. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at an increased risk of developing PRES; however, it is unclear whether this risk is primarily driven by comorbid conditions or if renal dysfunction itself is an independent risk factor. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, outcomes, and resource utilization of PRES across CKD stages compared with patients without kidney disease. STUDY DESIGN:

Brain Tumor-Induced Changes in Routine Parameters of the Lipid Spectrum of Blood Plasma and Its Short-Chain Fatty Acids.

The aim of this research was to provide a comparative analysis of the major parameters of the blood lipid spectrum found both in the case of brain tumors and in atherosclerosis, as well as to assess the correlation of these indicators with the proliferative activity index Ki-67 in cells. Blood analyses were conducted on samples from 50 patients with brain tumors and 50 patients with cerebral atherosclerosis. Blood plasma from 50 essentially healthy people was used for controls. Significant differences were found in the parameter values between the atherosclerosis sufferers and the control grou

Increased tau-induced inflammatory responses are associated with a greater degree of atherosclerosis in progressive supranuclear palsy.

INTRODUCTION: It has been reported that progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) has a higher prevalence of cerebrovascular disease (CVD); however, the relationship between PSP and atherosclerotic disease remains poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the burden of atherosclerosis in patients with PSP and explore the potential role of tau-induced inflammation in its pathogenesis. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 56 patients with PSP and 56 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Carotid and cerebral atherosclerosis was assessed using ultrasound and magnetic resonanc

Causal Relationship Between Sjögren's Syndrome and Atherosclerosis: A Bidirectional, Two-Sample, Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and atherosclerosis (AS) might share underlying immunological and inflammatory processes. Observational data have pointed toward a potential association between SS and a heightened likelihood of developing AS, though the causal direction and specific dynamics of this relationship have not been clearly verified. This Mendelian randomization (MR) investigation opts to investigate potential bidirectional causality between SS and three types of AS: coronary, cerebral, and peripheral. METHODS: Genetic variants significantly linked

Late-onset alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, and cerebrovascular disease. A complex relationship too often neglected: a narrative review.

Since the 1990s, a long series of preclinical, epidemiological, clinical, and anatomo-pathological studies have questioned the purely "degenerative" origin of Alzheimer's disease (AD), providing growing evidence of a possible "vascular" involvement in the pathogenesis of this type of dementia.Currently, evidence accumulated from preclinical, epidemiological, anatomo-pathological, clinical, neuroimaging, and proteomic studies supports a significant role of cerebral atherosclerosis in the pathogenesis of late-onset sporadic AD (LOAD). It is now well established that cerebral atherosclerosis, thr

Incremental value of coronary computed tomography-derived fractional flow reserve for the prediction of major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Patients with ischemic stroke (IS) experience high recurrence rates and are susceptible to adverse cardiac events. To enhance risk stratification, this study aims to investigate the prognostic value of coronary computed tomography-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) in this population and to integrate CT-FFR into a risk prediction model for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). METHODS: Patients diagnosed with IS who underwent one-step integrated coronary-carotid-cerebral computed tomography angiography (ICCC-CTA) were prospectively enrolled. The morphological paramete

The impact of educational attainment on the risk of three types of atherosclerosis: A two-sample mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is a leading contributor to cardiovascular disease and mortality worldwide, influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Educational attainment, as a key socioeconomic indicator, has been consistently associated with cardiovascular risk in observational studies. However, the causal nature of this relationship remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the potential causal association between educational attainment and the risk of atherosclerosis using Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. METHODS: We performed a two-sample MR analysis using genome-

Causal relationship between cerebral atherosclerosis and cerebrospinal fluid metabolites: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Cerebral atherosclerosis has been linked in observational studies to changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolites, yet whether these associations reflect causal relationships is uncertain. Understanding such links could advance biomarker discovery and prevention strategies. We conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis to evaluate potential causal associations between 338 CSF metabolites and the risk of cerebral atherosclerosis, using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies. The inverse variance weighted method was the primary approach, complemented by Mende

Longitudinal analysis of electronic health records reveals medical conditions associated with subsequent Alzheimer's disease development.

BACKGROUND: Several health conditions are known to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aim to systematically identify medical conditions that are associated with subsequent development of AD by leveraging the growing resources of electronic health records (EHRs). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used de-identified EHRs from two independent databases (MarketScan and VUMC) with 153 million individuals to identify AD cases and age- and gender-matched controls. By tracking their EHRs over a 10-year window before AD diagnosis and comparing the EHRs between AD cases and contro

Association of microRNAs with cerebral atherosclerosis progression: the role of endovascular interventions.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis of the brachiocephalic arteries is one of the leading causes of ischemic cerebrovascular disorders, which is based on a complex, multi-stage process regulated by epigenetic mechanisms. The latter, in particular, include changes in the expression of molecules such as microRNAs - small (on average, 22 nucleotides) non-coding RNA sequences that are heavily involved in most physiological and pathological processes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the expression of miR-126-5p/-3p, miR-21-5p/-3p, miR-33a-5p/-3p, miR-29a-5p/-3p in relation to association w
