Measles virus (MeV) infection is mediated by two cellular receptors: signaling lymphocytic activation molecule family member 1 (SLAMF1, also known as CD150), expressed by immune cells, and nectin-4, expressed by epithelial cells. Infection of immune cells causes systemic disease and immune suppression, while infection of airway epithelial cells results in efficient transmission. In rare cases, MeV reaches the brain and slowly spreads in cells that do not express bona fide receptors, causing subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). In the brains of persons with SSPE, multiple mutations of th

We describe three patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) presenting with hemiballistic slow myoclonus, an unusual and rarely reported motor phenotype. Periodic slow myoclonus is a hallmark clinical feature of SSPE and is considered pathognomonic, yet its expression is typically axial or generalized. Hemiballistic presentation of slow myoclonus is distinctly uncommon and has received little attention in the literature. These cases expand the recognized motor repertoire of SSPE and highlight a variant expression of periodic cortical discharges involving asymmetric ballistic rec

BACKGROUND: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of spectrum of neuroimaging findings in Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE) across case reports and cohort studies.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted as per PRISMA guidelines. Electronic databases were searched from inception using predefined terms related to SSPE and neuroimaging. Eligible studies included confirmed cases with reported imaging findings from case reports, case series, and cohort studies.
RESULTS: Among 461 reported cases, neuroimaging was performed in 456 (98.9%), with MRI in 394 (85.5%) and CT in 58 (12.6%).

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a slowly progressive viral infection that develops as a result of persistent measles virus infection of the central nervous system. After a prolonged latent period ranging from several years to more than a decade, neurological symptoms emerge. Once the disease manifests, cognitive impairment and motor dysfunction progressively worsen, leading to global cerebral cortical dysfunction and a fatal outcome within several months to several years. No established effective treatment is available, and the prevention of measles infection through vaccination

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a fatal neurodegenerative complication of measles, characterized by a progressive decline in neurological function. This case series described 42 children diagnosed with SSPE and received treatment at a tertiary neurology hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from the year 2019 to 2021. The median age at onset of was 4 years (range: 2.5-11 years), with a mean latent period of 2.68 ± 0.97 (SD) years. While 30 cases (71.4%) were immunized, 23 of these children developed SSPE despite receiving immunization after 9 months of age. Additionally, a small proport

Nasu-Hakola disease (NHD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive dementia and multiple bone cysts. The known pathogenic genes include TYRO protein tyrosine kinase binding protein (TYROBP) on chromosome 19q13.1 and triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) on chromosome 6p21.1. Until now, no case related to TYROBP gene mutation has been reported in the Chinese population. We report a 39-year-old Chinese Han patient who presented with early-onset dementia and cystic bone lesions. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed extensive cerebral atrophy with v

Measles virus (MeV) remains a serious public health concern, necessitating the development of effective antivirals targeting the viral fusion (F) glycoprotein. This study employed a robust computational pipeline, including molecular docking, 1000 ns all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and free energy landscape (FEL) analysis, to evaluate minor cannabinoids as novel inhibitors of the MeV F protein. Initial virtual screening identified Cannabichromenic acid (CBCA), Cannabichromevarin (CBCV), and Cannabiripsol (CBR) as high-affinity leads, with docking scores of - 8.5, - 8.2, and - 8.1

Nasu-Hakola disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline and bone cyst formation and is commonly associated with triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) variants. Herein, we report a novel TREM2 frameshift variant in a middle-aged man from a consanguineous Chinese family who presented with early-onset dementia and right ankle pain. Neuroimaging and skeletal examinations revealed cerebral atrophy and bone cystic lesions. Whole-exome sequencing followed by Sanger confirmation identified a homozygous TREM2 c.257del (p.D86Afs*103) v

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive, uniformly fatal neuroinflammatory disease caused by persistent measles virus encephalitis, characterised by chronic T-cell-mediated inflammation, progressive demyelination, and cortico-striatal-thalamic network dysfunction. Conventional MRI characterises established structural disease but does not capture early haemodynamic alterations. We aimed to characterise regional perfusion patterns using cerebellar-normalised arterial spin labeling (ASL) ratios, define qualitative perfusion phenotypes, and examine their

We report a case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis in a 14-year-old boy who presented to specialized care 17 months after the onset of symptoms, at advanced disease stage with cognitive decline, seizures, myoclonus and dystonia. A history of infantile measles, combined with characteristic electroencephalography, neuroimaging, and elevated cerebrospinal fluid measles IgG levels, confirmed the diagnosis. The prolonged delay to presentation, driven by barriers to healthcare access, limited community and provider awareness of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, and social stigma resulted in

BACKGROUND: Advances in neonatal intensive care in Kazakhstan have improved the survival of preterm infants, including those with very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW). However, after hospital discharge, these medically vulnerable children may remain insufficiently protected against vaccine-preventable infections because of prolonged temporary medical exemptions, clinical caution, parental concerns, and fragmented coordination between specialized follow-up services and primary health care.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess vaccination coverage in a 10-year coh

Despite the availability of a safe and effective measles vaccine for several decades, measles remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, causing 95,000 deaths in 2024 alone. Currently, there is no licensed therapeutic agent against measles, and treatment is only supportive. This is a review of articles published from 2015 to 3 June 2025, on therapeutic agents used or under investigation against measles. Ribavirin has been used in severe measles cases; nevertheless, there are no randomized clinical trials so far. New delivery systems, such as polymer-based formulations an

BACKGROUND: Deduplication is usually treated as a routine preprocessing step in systematic reviews, yet errors introduced at this stage are not visible in Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flow diagrams and can propagate through evidence synthesis.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity and reproducibility of commonly used deduplication tools in a paediatric neuroradiology systematic review.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed and Embase were searched for peer-reviewed literature on paediatric subacute sclerosing panencephalitis neuroimaging, yielding 603 rec
