Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. More than the 43 citations garner

Diagnostic Value of Revised Diagnostic Criteria for Thromboangiitis Obliterans (Buerger's Disease): A Cross-sectional Study.

Three deficiencies of the Papa criteria (point scoring system, PSS) for thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) were identified and updated. According to the new criteria, 185 patients with clinically diagnosed TAO in a single center using the diagnostic criteria of Shionoya were scored and re-diagnosed. The diagnostic criteria of The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (JMHLW) were used as the comparative standard to compare the diagnostic value of the revised PSS (RPSS) criteria in the diagnosis of TAO. Among the 185 patients, 145 patients were possibly diagnosed with TAO by the RPSS di

Review of Excessive Cytosolic DNA and Its Role in AIM2 and cGAS-STING Mediated Psoriasis Development.

In psoriasis, keratinocytes are triggered by factors, such as infection or tissue damage, to release DNA, which thereby activates plasmacytoid dendritic cells and macrophages to induce inflammation, thickened epidermis, and parakeratosis. The recognition of double-stranded (ds)DNA facilitates the activation of cytoplasmic DNA sensors absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) inflammasome assembly and cyclic guanosine monophosphate adenosine monophosphate (cGAMP) synthase (cGAS) - stimulator of interferon gene (STING) pathway, both of which play a pivotal role in mediating the inflammatory response and drivi

Short-term efficacy of endovascular procedures for lower extremity thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

PURPOSE: Although thrombolysis obliterans (TAO) has been recognized for more than a century, there is no optimal treatment for this disease. The aim of this report was to compare the short-term efficacies of catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT), percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and CDT+PTA in treating TAO disease. METHOD: Consecutive patients with TAO treated at Ganzhou People's Hospital between 2012 and 2022 were included in this retrospective study. According to the information provided in the medical records, endovascular procedures included CDT, PTA or CDT+PTA. One-year follow-

Thromboangiitis Obliterans (Buerger's Disease): A Young Woman's Rare Case and Current Knowledge.

In this paper, we described the clinical features and the typical vascular imaging picture of a rare case of thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) in a 47-year-old, young, Caucasian woman without relevant medical records except for smoking habits and admitted to our Department of Internal Medicine with a necrotic lesion of the first and third toes of the right foot. After a rapid clinical and instrumental evaluation, necrotic tissue debridement was performed and the patient was treated with Iloprost infusion and antibiotics (for overlapping infection) with clinical improvement. Moreover, we summari

Ultrasonographic Study of the Corkscrew Arterial Image in Buerger Disease Patients.

Objective: Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger disease) is known as an intractable vascular disease that has been reported as thrombosis in distal arteries and occasional venous occlusion, as well as inflammatory changes in the thrombus and vascular wall. Patients often require limb amputation due to limb necrosis. Corkscrew (CS), a small arterial coiling, is an important diagnostic finding that was mainly found with angiography. Recently, however, it can also be identified using a modern ultrasonographic technique. Methods: In these 22 cases, in 48 areas of study, we used the ultrasonographic

Cannabis arteritis: A case report and brief review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis is commonly misused psychoactive drug which is known to be associated with a number of psychotic and somatic side-effects. Cannabis arteritis is a rare vascular disorder, since only about fifty cases have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 40-year-old chronic cannabis user male, who was admitted for painful necrosis of the fifth toe of the right foot. The etiological investigation ruled out the main causes of juvenile arterial disease. Therefore cannabis was the only causative factor found in this patient. An amputation of the fift

Thromboangiitis Obliterans (Buerger's Disease) in an Adolescent Male.

Arterial occlusive disease of the limb is very rare in children. Buerger's disease (BD) is a nonatherosclerotic, segmental inflammatory arteritis affecting the small and medium-sized vessels of the extremities. We report BD in a 16-year-old male presenting with arterial insufficiency of left foot and history of smoking cigarettes and cannabis for 2 years. BD was diagnosed based on history of smoking in combination with clinical, laboratory, and radiologic findings. Pediatric hemato-oncologists should consider BD in the differential diagnosis in adolescents who smoke cigarettes and/or cannabis

The historical differential diagnosis of the disease that afflicted Aleijadinho, the famous 18th century Brazilian sculptor.

BACKGROUND: The famous Brazilian Baroque sculptor named Antônio Francisco Lisboa, known as "Aleijadinho" (1738-1814), suffered from a deforming disease of the lower and upper limbs. The condition was characterized by atrophy, paresis and amputation. His face was also affected, with inflammation of the eyelids, deviation of the labial commissure, drooping of the chin and lower lip, giving him a sinister expression. Despite the disabling and chronic illness, he produced several works of great expression in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of them were declared World Heritage Sites by United Nat

[Comprehensive treatment of a patient with Buerger's disease using genetically engineered complexes VEGF-165].

Buerger's disease, also known as thromboangiitis obliterans, is a severe invalidating systemic vascular disease. To one of the modern methods, which is distinguished by its radically new principles of action, as well as holding much promise for further study and application in treatment of patients with lower limb chronic ischaemia induced by thromboangiitis obliterans belongs the use of genetically engineered complexes based on vascular endothelial growth factor VEGF-165 ('Neovasculgen'). 'Neovasculgen' is a genetically engineered complex being a circular DNA (native plasmid on the CELO vecto

Sequential intravenous allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells as a potential treatment for thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), also known as Buerger's Disease, is an occlusive vasculitis linked with high morbidity and amputation risk. To date, TAO is deemed incurable due to the lack of a definitive treatment. The immune system and inflammation are proposed to play a central role in TAO pathogenesis. Due to their immunomodulatory effects, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are the subject of intense research for the treatment of a wide range of immune-mediated diseases. Thus far, local intramuscular injections of autologous or allogeneic MSCs have shown promising results in TAO. However,

Stem cell therapy for treatment of thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

BACKGROUND: Thromboangiitis obliterans, also known as Buerger's disease, is a non-atherosclerotic, segmental inflammatory pathology that most commonly affects the small- and medium-sized arteries, veins, and nerves in the upper and lower extremities. The etiology is unknown, but involves hereditary susceptibility, tobacco exposure, immune and coagulation responses. In many cases, there is no possibility of revascularization to improve the condition. Stem cell therapy is an option for patients with severe complications, such as ischemic ulcers or rest pain. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiven

Treatment of Thromboangiitis Obliterans Using Smoking Cessation and Far-infrared Therapy: A Case Study.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) is a rare, nonatherosclerotic segmental inflammatory vasculitis that commonly involves small- and medium-sized vessels. Ischemic tenderness impairs patient quality of life and places patients at high risk for amputation. The only definitive known treatment is smoking cessation. Far-infrared (FIR) therapy has shown promising effects on blood flow and healing, but its use in patients with Buerger's disease has not been reported. A 31-year-old man with a 15-pack-year history of smoking, no drug abuse, and no other significant medical history, trauma,
