Antiendothelial cell antibodies in thromboangiitis obliterans.

The occurrence of autoimmune phenomena in 28 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) was determined. The following were sought: antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies against proteinase 3 (cANCA) and myeloperoxidase (pANCA), antinuclear antibodies, anti-Ro antibodies, anticardiolipin antibodies, and antiendothelial cell antibodies (AECA). For the last, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed which verified the presence of the AECA phenomenon with immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. Seven patients with active disease had AECA titers of 1,857 +/- 450 arbitr

Inpatient treatment of severe nicotine dependence in a patient with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), or Buerger's disease, is an inflammatory, occlusive, and nonatherosclerotic vascular disease that most commonly affects small and medium-sized arteries and veins. The association between tobacco use and the development of TAO is incontestable; however, a substantial number of patients with TAO continue to use tobacco despite progression of disease and amputation. Herein we describe a patient with advanced TAO whose severe, refractory nicotine dependence was successfully treated in a specialized nicotine-dependence inpatient program. After cessation of smoking,

Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) with intestinal involvement--a case report.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) or Buerger's disease is a nonatherosclerotic vascular disease of unknown etiology that occurs almost exclusively in young male tobacco users. The involvement of the medium-sized and small arteries and veins leads to ischemic complaints and trophic changes in the limbs. The authors report a case of Buerger's disease in a 29-year-old man, a heavy smoker, affecting the lower limbs and mesenteric vessels.

Buerger's disease in Nepal.

At Tansen Mission Hospital in the middle hill area of Nepal the 4-year discharge data base was surveyed for amputations due to thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease). An incidence of 693/100,000 admissions was found. This is 50 times higher than the North American incidence. We investigated causative factors by means of in-depth interviews about genetic background, life style, diet and geography. In addition to tobacco use which was 100%, we found only extreme poverty, a diet of mostly maize, and residence in the Himalayan foothills as consistent co-factors.

Study of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies in patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

The presence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) and their specificity to myeloperoxidase, lactoferrin and elastase were studied in 27 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease), including nine in mild stage of the disease (group I) and 18 in active or severe stage (group II). Serum samples were investigated for ANCA prevalence by indirect immunofluorescent technique and fixed neutrophil ELISA; the reactivity to myeloperoxidase, lactoferrin and elastase was measured by ELISA. ANCA were found in 55.5% (15/27) of the patients by indirect immunofluorescence and in 59

Treatment of thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) by intramuscular gene transfer of vascular endothelial growth factor: preliminary clinical results.

PURPOSE: Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), or Buerger's disease, a distinct form of vascular occlusive disease that afflicts the peripheral arteries of young smokers, is often characterized by an inexorable downhill course even in patients who discontinue smoking once a stage of critical limb ischemia associated with ulceration or gangrene is reached. As part of a phase I clinical trial to document the safety and efficacy of intramuscular gene transfer of naked plasmid DNA-encoding vascular endothelial growth factor (phVEGF165) in the treatment of critical limb ischemia, we treated TAO in 6 pa

Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is a nonatherosclerotic segmental inflammatory obliterative disease that most commonly affects the small- and medium-sized arteries and veins in both upper and lower extremities. In the past, TAO was exclusively a disease confined to men; however, recently more women have been diagnosed with TAO. Most patients are heavy users of tobacco, and usually cigarette smokers.

[Right laparoscopic lumbar sympathectomy].

Laparoscopic lumbar sympathectomy was performed on a young man with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease). The surgeons disposition, trocars placement and dissection technique are described in detail. The retroperitoneal approach was done in a manner similar to laparoscopic properitoneal hernia repair. The operation can be carried out with common laparoscopic equipment (for cholecystectomy) and offers the benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

[Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger disease) discovered by symptoms of arthralgia in a young woman].

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) or Buerger's disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the small and medium caliber arteries and veins. It affects predominantly young, smoking males. The clinical manifestations are usually ischemic lesions of the extremities or limb claudication. The physiopathology is yet unknown. However, several hypotheses involving a dysregulation of the immune response are discussed. Here, we report a case of a young woman, smoker, that presented with diffuse arthralgia of the lower extremities. We were able to diagnose a thromboangiitis obliterans using criteria e

Colonic ischemia reveals thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

Two years before the appearance of distal peripheral manifestations of thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease), a young man had acute peritonitis attributable to an ischemic perforation of the sigmoid colon. Only the histological examination of excised tissue was able to differentially diagnose this entity unambiguously.

Multiple organ manifestations in thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease). A case report.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) occurs almost exclusively in young male smokers. Its involvement of the small and medium-sized arteries and veins leads to ischemic complaints and/or changes in the extremities. The possibility of organ involvement is a matter of controversy. The authors report a case of TAO with multiple organ involvement, including myocardial, splenic, and cerebral infarctions; pulmonary embolisms; and probable intestinal ischemia during a twenty-three-year course.

[Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) in 2 women].

In two female patients with an ischaemic peripheral disease, 49 and 32 years old, thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) was diagnosed. One suffered from ulceration of her left second toe, the other from pain of both hands followed by ulceration of two fingers. Both were smokers. Surgical treatment (amputation) was required, and they also had a prostacyclin infusion. They recovered and stopped smoking. Thromboangiitis obliterans is a non-arteriosclerotic, segmental occlusive disease of medium-sized and small arteries and veins, occurring predominantly in young male habitual smokers. In

Impaired endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in peripheral vasculature of patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

BACKGROUND: Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is an occlusive arterial disease and a separate disease entity from atherosclerosis. It occurs mainly in the small and medium-sized vessels. Although the cause of TAO is unknown, systemic factors (immunological or humoral) may be involved in addition to abnormal peripheral microcirculation. Endothelium is now recognized as an important factor in the maintenance of microvascular circulation and the inhibition of platelet aggregation. This study examines the possible impairment of endothelium-dependent vasodilation in the peripheral vasculature of pat
