Buerger disease is an chronic vasculitis mainly involving lower extremities. This disease is sometimes contrasted with Takayasu arteritis because both are speculated autoimmune mechanisms as an important factor in their etiology. Furthermore both are frequently encountered in Asian countries. However, patients with Takayasu arteritis were mostly young women in Japan and, on the contrary, patients with Buerger disease were mainly middle aged men. Recent HLA studies on Buerger disease are revealing the interesting results in comparison with those on Takayasu arteritis. The outline of Buerger dis

Thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) is an inflammatory obliterative, nonatherosclerotic, vascular disease that affects the small- and medium-sized arteries, veins, and nerves. It is causally related to tobacco use, although the exact mechanism is unknown. Its clinical presentation is manifested by distal arterial ischemia and superficial thrombophlebitis. Thromboangiitis obliterans usually becomes quiescent if the patient is able to stop smoking cigarettes. However, if smoking continues, amputation commonly results.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is a recurrent, inflammatory, segmental occlusive disease of distal limb arteries which may involve veins as well. Young smokers are predisposed to TAO. The intestinal vessels are rarely affected. We report the clinical, angiographic and histologic findings of a 23-year-old smoker with extended thrombophlebitis who developed severe abdominal angina and liver hypoxia due to occlusion of the coeliac artery and subtotal occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery. Two surgical bypassing procedures were followed by early graft occlusion. Subsequently, a plastic pat

This article reviews the histopathological, clinical and immunological features of the arteritides. Based on these criteria, a classification scheme is proposed that includes infectious and non-infectious causes. Included in the non-infectious arteritides are: hypersensitivity vasculitis including serum sickness. Henoch-Schönlein purpura, mixed cryoglobulinaemia, hypocomplementaemia, drug and malignancy-associated vasculitis; arteritides of small and medium-sized arteries including polyarteritis nodosa, Kawasaki's disease, Wegener's granulomatosis, Churg-Strauss syndrome, necrotizing sarcoid g

A retrospective analysis of 30 angiograms in 29 patients performed at Doctor's Hospital since June of 1989 was carried out. Of these, 15 patients with 16 involved extremities presented with no antecedent trauma and significant symptoms of arterial insufficiency with impending digital necrosis. Eleven were female and four were male. Underlying medical problems included renal failure in four, diabetes in two, scleroderma in two and vasculitis in one. A unique group of six patients had no prior underlying medical problems. All six patients were female and all were smokers. A surprisingly high inc

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is an occlusive vascular disease traditionally known to be almost exclusive to young male smokers. The disease was considered to be extremely rare in women, seen only as isolated, novel case reports in the literature. In the past decade, however, a dramatic increase in the incidence of female TAO has been observed. In this paper the authors report 7 cases of clinically and angiographically verified female TAO. The world literature in regard to the diagnostic criteria, changing incidence, and etiology is reviewed. They conclude that the increased use of tobacco

Although patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease due to thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) have been well characterized and the relationship of this disease to tobacco is stressed, little attention has been focused on its ability to involve the mesenteric vasculature and its ability to affect women. We report a rare case of a known TAO female patient who presented with abdominal pain due to inflammatory changes of the mesenteric vessels. The resulting small bowel ischemic changes and formation of intramural gas were demonstrated on a small bowel follow-through and a plain abdominal f

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to know the prevalence, clinical and immunological characteristics and evolution of thromboangiitis obliterans.
METHODS: Between 1982-1990 41 cases of thromboangiitis obliterans were diagnosed from among 373,899 patients registered (11/100,000) according to the clinical and arteriographic criteria. Of these 41 cases 40 were males with mean age 36 +/- 7 years (mean +/- SD) with only two cases being over 45 years of age. In 40 cases was followed for 44 +/- 29 months (mean +/- SD).
RESULTS: All the patients had ischemia of the lower limbs, 34% of the upper

This study is a continuation of our previous work that showed that patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO; Buerger's disease) demonstrate a cell-mediated immune response to human artery type-specific collagens. To investigate the role of cigarette smoking in patients with TAO, cellular and humoral sensitivity was tested to a tobacco glycoprotein (TGP) antigen in 13 patients with Buerger's disease, 16 healthy smokers, and 12 nonsmoking healthy young male subjects. In this study, patients with Buerger's disease and healthy smokers had the same rate of cellular response to TGP, whereas non

Plasma levels of plasminogen activators (t-PA, u-PA) and their inhibitor (PAI-1) were studied in patients suffering from Buerger's disease and healthy volunteers before and after 15 minutes of venous occlusion test. The baseline levels of t-PA in group of patients did not differ from those of controls. On the contrary patients with Burger's disease showed a marked increase in u-PA antigen concentrations with concomitant decrease in PAI-1 antigen levels. During venous stasis t-PA antigen concentrations increased in all subjects, however it was much pronounced in controls. Venous occlusion resul

A case of thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) showing vascular lesions in the oral cavity is presented. To our knowledge, this is the first report of involvement of branches of the external carotid artery with this disease. The clinical, radiographic, plethysmographic, and histologic features of Buerger's disease are presented. Etiologic factors, pathogenesis, and treatment modalities are discussed.

152 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) and pain from critical leg ischaemia were randomly allocated to receive iloprost, a chemically stable prostacyclin analogue, or low-dose aspirin, for 28 days in a double-blind trial. On review, 19 patients did not fulfil the stringent entry criteria. Of the other 133 patients, 98 also had leg ulcers. After 21-28 days, 58 (85%) of 68 iloprost-treated patients showed ulcer healing or relief of ischaemic pain, compared with 11 (17%) of 65 in the aspirin-treated group. 43 (63%) on iloprost treatment had complete relief of pain, compa

In order to elucidate histologic characteristics of the pathologic processes in thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) a histopathologic study of amputated legs of 9 patients diagnosed as this disease was carried out. The ages of the patients ranged from 27 to 47 years, all male, and the duration of symptoms prior to amputation was between 3 and 11 years. All of the patients had no history of hypertension. The initial stage of the pathologic processes was characterized by contraction of small arteries of legs followed by intimal thickening with laminar elastosis, the subsequent stage b

Between 1970 and 1987, 112 patients were diagnosed as having thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO). The age was 42 +/- 11 years (mean +/- SD; range, 20-75 years); 23% were women, and 7% were more than 60 years old when they were first diagnosed. Ischemic ulcerations were present in 85 (76%) patients: 24 (28%) patients with upper-extremity, 39 (46%) patients with lower-extremity, and 22 (26%) patients with both upper- and lower-extremity lesions. Ninety-one (81%) patients had rest pain, 49 (44%) patients had Raynaud's phenomenon, and 43 (38%) patients had superficial thrombophlebitis. We were able t

The diagnosis of thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's Disease) in a young patient can only be arrived at by means of a number of different arguments: clinical, biological and immunological, angiography, capillaroscopy especially if it concerns a young female patient; the rarity of TAO in a young woman ought to mean that scleroderma and lupus can be discounted; it also necessitates an annual clinical and paraclinical check-up.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO; or Buerger's disease) is a nonarteriosclerotic, segmental, occlusive inflammatory disease of medium-sized and small arteries and veins of unknown cause, occurring predominantly in young male habitual tobacco users. Less than 2% of the patients with TAO are women or elderly persons. TAO is a treatable disease when diagnosed early and if strict abstinence from tobacco is observed. Otherwise progression and exacerbation of limb ischemia may lead to multiple and repeated amputations, and rarely visceral or cerebral ischemia. Over a 40-year period, 1947 to 1986, the

Infrapopliteal bypass with autogenous vein graft was performed in twenty-three patients of thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's Disease) during the past 8 years. The outflow vessel of the graft had the direct connection with the pedal arch in 3 cases. In 20 cases the graft was anastomosed to the solitary tibial or peroneal segment, in which the occlusive lesion existed between the outflow vessel and pedal arch, or otherwise, the pedal arch was not opacified in the arteriogram. The length of the solitary tibial or peroneal segment of the successful cases ranged from 11.5 cm to 29.0 cm. The cum
